Background

Every Breath Counts (EBC) is a global platform that unites diverse partners from across many sectors to raise awareness of pneumonia as the leading killer of children and to catalyze investment in prevention and community access to appropriate treatment. EBC collaborates with initiatives on climate change, household air pollution, nutrition, and education among many others. This year EBC will participate and host events at the 22nd United Nations’ Conference of the Parties (COP).

COP is the largest global meeting that brings together heads of states, ministers, advocates, journalists, and civil society leaders to negotiate global climate deals and highlight new climate change research. In order to illuminate the intersections of human and climate change, EBC is hosting a side event to raise awareness on the indirect environmental health impacts of indoor air pollution and to highlight the progress to mitigate child pneumonia mortality.

To mobilize and engage the public, we have included the following in this toolkit:

✓ Posters, infographics, videos, and resource materials to learn more about how indoor air pollution impacts pneumonia prevalence

✓ Press release✓ Sample email✓ Social media messages + hashtags for World Pneumonia Day &

COP22 events

This dynamic toolkit is designed to synthesize key information across several stakeholders, therefore it can used in its entirety or in part, whichever is most comfortable for you and your team.

For any questions regarding the COP22 Side Event please contact Bissie Tarekegn, [email protected] and the social media toolkit, please contact Roxanne O'Connell, [email protected].

The effects of indoor air pollution kill more children globally than outdoor air pollution. #COP22 #endpneumonia

2 billion children live in areas where outdoor air pollution exceeds international guideline limits. #endpneumonia #COP22

Pneumonia is seriously underfunded - we need targeted financial investments to end preventable pneumonia deaths for all children.

Diarrhea and pneumonia have a disproportionately high impact on mortality and are among the cheapest diseases to treat. #endpneumonia

Almost 1 in 7 children (300 million) live with toxic levels of outdoor air pollution. #COP22 #endpneumonia

Pollution is one of the leading dangers facing children and is directly linked to diseases that kill nearly 600,000 children every year.

Children are more susceptible to air pollution as their immune systems are still developing and lungs are more permeable. #COP22

Younger children breathe twice as quickly as adults and take in more air relative to their body weight. #COP22 #worldpneumoniaday

UNICEF is advocating for action to reduce the impact of outdoor air pollution on children’s health. #COP22 #endpneumonia

UNICEF is calling on world leaders attending COP 22 to pledge to take four urgent steps in their countries. #endpneumonia

All countries must work to meet WHO global air quality guidelines to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children. #COP22 #endpneumonia

Governments should take measures like cutting back on fossil fuel combustion and investing in renewable energy sources. #COP22

Governments must invest in children’s overall healthcare to improve their resilience to air pollution. #endpneumonia

Governments must better monitor air pollution and its link with children’s health. #COP22 #endpneumonia

3 billion people cook and heat their homes using open fires and simple stoves making them vulnerable to contract #pneumonia #WHO

More than 50% of premature deaths due to pneumonia among children under 5 are linked to household air pollution. #endpneumonia #COP22 #WHO

Did you know that #pneumonia is the #1 killer of children under 5 in the world? #worldpneumoniaday #endpneumonia

Seven out of every ten child #pneumonia deaths now occur in just 15 countries.

No child needs to die from #pneumonia or diarrhea; ending preventable child deaths from these diseases is within our grasp. #endpneumonia

#Pneumonia and diarrhea are responsible for the unnecessary loss of 1.4 million people each year. #worldpneumoniaday #endpneumonia

Poorest countries are home 15% of the world’s under-5 population, but suffer more than 30% of global #pneumonia and diarrhea deaths.

Sample Email

Dear XXX,

Did you know that women and children in many countries spend an average of 3-7 hours preparing food? Did you know that their exposure to fuel inefficient stoves exposes them to hazardous pollutants that cause severe and deadly respiratory diseases such as pneumonia?

As a result, over 50 percent of pneumonia deaths are in children under five years. More than a third of those deaths occur in Africa.

Join me in raising awareness to end preventable child pneumonia deaths. Share this information with your network using the hashtag #worldpneumoniaday!

Sincerely,XXX
