Personal StatementWhat to include:You do need to think carefully about the things that all your chosen providers will want to know about you. You’ll probably want to include things like:

o your reasons for wanting to teacho evidence that you understand the rewards and challenges of teachingo details of your previous education and how you have benefitted from ito experience of teaching such as visits to schools, classroom observation or working as a teaching assistanto any other work with young people such as helping with a youth club, working at a summer camp or running

a sports teamo The range of relevant abilities and skills you can bring to teaching, for example, practical experience,

(PEP) organised by the National College of School Leadership (formerly the Teaching Agency)

These are the things all training providers want to know whether they’re School Direct, a university or a SCITT so there’s no need to worry that you can’t write different personal statements.

How to write it:You can use up to 4,000 characters or 47 lines of text (including spaces). Some word processing packages calculate character and line counts differently from the UCAS Teacher Training system, so you might need to redraft your statement if there’s a discrepancy between the counts.

o Write in English (or Welsh if you’re applying to Welsh providers) and avoid italics, bold or underlining.o Get the grammar and punctuation right and redraft your statement until you’re happy with it.o It’s a good idea to write your statement first then copy and paste it into your application

Don’t copy Don’t copy anyone else’s personal statement or from statements posted on the internet. Make sure your personal

statement is all your own work. We screen all personal statements across our Copy catch similarity detection system. If we find any similarity, your

application will be flagged; you and all your choices will receive an email alert and this could have serious consequences for your application.

Apply 1

Applicants will begin their application through Apply 1. You will have up to three choices of schools, however, you can only apply to a course when it has been opened; therefore you need to think clearly as to which three choices you are going to make. All choices must be made at the same time and can only be changed within the first 7 days of submitting your application. Each applicant will be told that a decision will be made from each provider within 40 working days (excluding weekends, bank holidays and school holidays). An interview will also be held within this time period. Decisions not recorded within the 40 working day period will be rejected by default.

We are responsible for the selection and recruitment of trainees of which we can make the following decisions to each applicant:• Unconditional Offer• Conditional Offer – Dependent on degree results, passing professional skills tests etc.• Reject• Withdraw • Not qualified in English, Maths or Science• Not considered Course Full

Offers that will be made conditionally, most to trainees passing the skills test, but that other conditions may be included for individual applicants.Applicants must respond to each offer within 10 working days of receiving their final decision, of which you can use Track in order to accept or decline each offer.

Apply 2

Applicants can only use Apply 2 when they have completed Apply 1 and are not holding an offer. In this case, you must only make one choice at a time in which we will still have 40 working days to make a decision on this. Again, once you have received their offer, you must reply within 10 working days. Apply 2 must only be used for unsuccessful applicants; any newly signed applicants must proceed through Apply 1.

The Interview Process

An interview date will be given to applicants via UCAS. You will also receive an email invitation to the interview by one of the Learners First Team. You will need to confirm your attendance.

All applicants must provide:

Photo Identification – Either a passport or driving licence GCSE Certificates in Mathematics and English – Original and Photocopied Suitability Declaration Health Declaration

On the day, you will be required to complete a task, followed, shortly afterwards, by a formal interview. Based on the subject that you have applied for, you will need to complete a variety of tasks throughout the day in order for you to interact with the children. These tasks will be presented to you on your invitation to interview letter.

You are also required to complete the Sheffield Hallam University Requirements of a Written Communication Test. You may complete this at your interview, or an invitation to when you will need to complete this test will be sent to you via email. You must complete this test to pass the School Direct Interview. You will have up to 1 hour to complete this test. Please be aware that these are separate to the Professional Skills Tests.

A decision as to whether or not you will be offered a place on the course will be made and you will be informed via the UCAS website.

Professional Skills Tests

All candidates MUST complete and pass the Professional Skills Tests before starting their Teacher Training Course in September. It is vital that you inform your provider of when you have passed these tests.

The numeracy and literacy skills tests:• cover the core skills that teachers need to fulfil their professional role in schools, rather than the subject knowledge required for teaching. This is to ensure all teachers are competent in numeracy and literacy, regardless of their specialism;• do not replace the GCSE grade C equivalence entry requirement;• are set in the context of the professional role of a teacher; all questions use real data and information which teachers are likely to encounter; and• are computerised and can be taken at any of approximately 150 test centres throughout the UK.

For more information on booking your Professional Skills Tests, please visit this website:http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/apply-for-teacher-training/skills-tests

This website also provides practice questions. There will also be workshops at Sheffield Hallam University for extra revision.

You are now ready to begin the Course!

Once an offer has been made to you, Learners First and Sheffield Hallam University will send you a Welcome Letter to the Course. Sheffield Hallam University will inform you of what you need to do in preparation for enrolment and your provider will inform you of where you Induction Day will take place. Over the summer, Learners First will provide you with all the information of where your placement school will be, who your mentor is for the year and the placement pattern that you will follow. You are then ready to begin the School Direct 2016/17 Course
