NOT FROM THE RECTORY`Nothing is forever`Six very happy years are over. Martin and Ruth have retired and the Rectory is empty – not for too long, we hope! Martin`s last Sunday service (10th Sept) was a memorable occasion – the fullest of congregations, all ages and from the four corners of the parish. The choir`s farewell song was a treat for all and the warmth of the atmosphere reflected the tremendous contribution made by Martin and Ruth to our two churches, the whole of the community and the lives of so many. They will be greatly missed. However now we must look forward and pull together during the interregnum and in support of our new incumbent.

Practical mattersThe Rectory will be locked up and Rick Langridge (01892-871268) has kindly offered to mow initially. He would appreciate offers of assistance to help keep the garden tidy during autumn and winter. Perhaps, a working party in late October to put the garden to bed for the winter.Any wedding matters should be addressed to our wedding co-ordinator, Sue Coleman (870435)Any pastoral matters should be addressed to the Pastoral Assistant, Carol Benton (870483)Any other matters relating to St Mary`s or St Luke`s should go to the relevant churchwardens (contact numbers on front page of magazine)

First stages in selection process(1) A Parish Profile is required by the Diocese. [A final amended copy has been sent](2) A `Notice of Vacancy` is sent by the Archdeacon to the PCC, when the Parish Profile is complete and not before the end of September (when Martin retired). [We will seek this on 1st October](3)Within 4 weeks, the PCC must hold a `Section 11` meeting [This is scheduled for 22/10/17](4)Section 11 meeting – main features include:- -Appointment of 2 representatives from each church to interview applicants and select/reject.

- Whether to ask the Patron (Bishop of Rochester) for approval to advertise nationally (in Church Times) in addition to Diocese nomination or following rejection of applicants. [PCC favour advertisement to achieve wider choice]

CommunicationThe churchwardens will use these Notes `Not from the Rectory` to provide a monthly update.Additional updates will be given mid-month during Notices at the end of the Sunday 10.00 morning service. After Sunday morning services, the churchwardens will be happy to answer questions in the Parish Room.

Interregnum services The next month`s services and clergy will appear in the Parish

magazine. All 10.00 Sunday services are covered but there will be a reduced

number of 8.00 services. Compline will take place as usual but with Carol or Jean officiating.

Although a few generous offers of increased covenants have been offered, these are insufficient to afford a full-time priest and the Parish will therefore be seeking a part-time priest (4-5 days a week) resident in the Rectory.BG/CB/PA/JA 18 Sept 2017

NURSERY NEWS

We are pleased to welcome all the new children and their families who have joined us for the September term, the new committee members and Mrs Kickham onto the staff core team, having been cover for many terms. We are looking forward to hearing how the children that have left us at the end of July are settling into their new primary schools.

The children are enjoying themselves playing and exploring the nursery environment and making lots of new friends. We are talking about ourselves and those things and people that we treasure and are dear to us.

To reinforce the settling in process we read the story ‘Owl Babies’ and then went into the castle wooded area to make baby owls out of clay, feathers and twigs.

For our letter sound ‘s’ we have read the story ‘Sam’s Sandwich’ and made sandwiches with different fillings of our own choice, some more appetising than others. We have been learning about healthy eating and food hygiene.

The ‘Gotcha smile’ has also been read and we looked in the mirror to look at our own smiley faces and passed these happy faces onto each other.

CHIDDINGSTONE WI.

Our September meeting was planned and taken by the members, Committee could take a night off although they had to make the tea!

We then sat back to listen to our speaker, Lyn Dabroska. It was as a young girl of 12 and reading a book that first whet her appetite for the Himalayas. Her opportunity came when listening to a Radio 4 programme some years later; her mind was made up and she announced to her family that she was off to trek in the Himalayas. The year was 1997. This trek and many more made her determined to help the children of Nepal. Education was so lacking, with 30 children educated in a three storey house. In 1999 the foundation stone was laid for a new school and to her delight on returning she noted the children speaking English. The political situation was dreadful and it was not long before the school was destroyed. Not to be beaten Lyn, seeing a rundown orphanage for 40-50 children aged from 3 months to 16 years, decided to fundraise for a new building. This was completed in 2006.Lyn has raised so much money herself with parachute jumps, paragliding and giving talks. She finished her talk telling us how she returns frequently to see her friends, when there she wears their traditional dress and is so highly thought of. Lyn you were an inspiration to us all.

Our next CRAFTERNOON session is on Tuesday 10th October in the St. Luke's Parish Room from 2 to 4pm. Anyone is welcome, not just WI members, to come and stitch, knit, craft, try a new skill, or just chat over a cuppa! £2 a session

Our October meeting Tues 3rd – The wonderful work and training of Medical Detection Dogs.Reminder to members that there will also be a Produce Stall.

Can we tempt you to join us, or to come along as a guest? We meet in Chiddingstone Village Hall, every first Tuesday, at 7-00 for 7.30pm. and have a variety of speakers as well as social evenings. You will receive a warm welcome and have the opportunity to socialise and make new friends. Interested? CHIDDINGSTONE CRICKET CLUBREPORT - SEPTEMBER 2017

To the irritation of all concerned, the season is nearly over. There have been some excellent performances in these final few weeks, emblematic of a season of notable attainment for the club. In spite of our recent struggles, Chidd still managed to comfortably finish 4th in the league, while losing only 4 of 23 games on a Sunday. Congratulations to all participants for their contributions to these excellent achievements.

The penultimate league fixture at Bidborough saw us on the receiving end of a pasting from a strong, soon-to-be-promoted outfit. Their youthful intensity overpowered our bowling, as they smashed their way to 278-8. Chasing such a mammoth total proved beyond us, although Richard Cooper deserves praise for his patiently constructed 33*. The final game at Knockholt was more rewarding, as (bowling first) we restricted their scoring rate, allowing them to muster only 145-9. Richard Mayes, Steve Leppard, and Robert Littler all bowled tidily. In reply, Alex Hanwell made 69 to anchor the chase. Fittingly, our Saturday skipper Eddie Allwood sliced the winning four through gully to seal a five wicket win, our ninth of the season. Thanks are due to Eddie for his leadership this year.

On Sundays, a draw at Linton Park on a pleasant batting surface reflected an impressive salvage job. Their batsmen plundered some erratic bowling (mea culpa), laying the foundations for a significant 234-5. Tony Cooper batted well for 73 not out to ensure we walked away with some sense of parity, Chidd settling for the draw having lost only five wickets. The indifferent weather played its part in a gruelling game at Bells Yew Green. Alex Hanwell and Graham Cooper notched up 50s in a total of 213-7. Bells Yew Green were fluent in reply, but lost wickets too regularly to truly threaten the target, eventually bowled out for 183.The weather gods made mischief the following week at St.Lawrence, in a game against wandering side Knockers CC. In a hastily arranged 20/20, they demonstrated a flair for the format, bludgeoning their way to 162. Lex Wills showed a more effervescent side to his batting in our response, compiling a classy 59. However, we were unable to overhaul their score, falling a mere ten runs short. Most recently, we contested a far cagier affair at Newington. Chris Franklin and Eddie Allwood took 4 wickets each to restrict them to 104. Complacency abounded as we replied in stuttering

11

Page 12: Web view- SE/17/01417/HOUSE: Polebrook Farm, Bore Place Road, ... the quicker it will be so please spread the word. ... Office of Tom Tugendhat MBE MP

fashion, subsiding to 71-8. To much relief, veteran campaigners Eddie (23*) and Brian Leppard (13*) shepherded us home from there in the decisive partnership of the match. A two wicket victory was the perfect way to conclude Phil Barnett’s impeccable tenure as Sunday captain and his final game for Chiddingstone CC. Phil has been a stalwart for the club, leading by example (22 wickets this year), fostering enthusiasm, and preserving a pleasant atmosphere in which we can enjoy this great game. Thank you very much Phil, we look forward to seeing you at the ground in seasons to come. To everyone else involved in making this year such a treat, heartfelt gratitude from us. We wish you all a tranquil winter. Looking forward to 2018. Cheers. AH

SCHOOL NEWSIt was lovely to welcome the new Reception class and to see the children return to school refreshed after their holidays. Year 6 started the term by producing some wonderful written pieces about the best day of their summer. Here is an excerpt from Eva Moseby’s work:“The best day of my summer was, undoubtedly, my birthday. It started when I opened my dreary eyes at 2.00am (what can I say? I was excited!). After many hours of reading, looking at the presents laid out on the kitchen table, making charms out of loom bands, looking at presents, reading some more, dancing and looking at presents, I decided it was time to wake my brother. He was very grumpy at first but once he realised it was his birthday too – we’re twins – he moaned a little less”

This month we are celebrating the Harvest, thanking God for what we have whilst learning about less fortunate people in other countries. Year 5 pupils have been preparing for the service with the creation of drama and dance pieces based on the Tear Fund’s “Hunger Steals” appeal. The intention behind this appeal is to empower local churches to release more people from hunger by raising money to provide training in innovative, sustainable farming techniques that could enable families to secure a hunger-free future – even in a challenging climate. Year 4 children have been learning about Fairtrade food and how it helps farmers across the world. They looked specifically at the journey of a banana from Costa Rica to the UK. The class all agreed that they would pay more for a Fairtrade banana because it keeps farming sustainable, benefits working

conditions and puts money into projects that help the local community. They have been inspired by Martin Luther King’s quote:

“Before you finish eating breakfast this morning, you’ve depended on more than half the world”

Across the whole school all the children will be decorating a Harvest envelope for a donation to the appeal and bringing in non-perishable food for the Tonbridge Food Bank.

Our Harvest Service will take place at St Mary’s Church at 9.00am on Wednesday, 4th October – everyone is most welcome to attend and there will be a collection for the “Hunger Steals” appeal.

LARKINS THANKS HOP-PICKERS

Bob Dockerty and co would like to thank all those who turned up for the hand-picking day and the FOUR days of machine picking. We very much appreciate all the hard work so generously volunteered. It was a bumper crop, now safely gathered in. A brew of Green Hop beer is already maturing in the cold room and we have a plentiful supply of pressed hops for the year ahead. KT
