Summary: the biology and behavior of the white mite Polyphagotarsonemus latus in the central coast of Perú were studied during the summer under laboratory conditions. Leaves of potato, mandarin, benas and the weed Nicandra physaloides were used as food. The mite’s life cycle was short and varied with sex and temperature, as the influence of the host plant was negligible. Development from egg to adult took 68 hours in females and 66 hours in males. The oviposition period was 6-8 days with an average of 22-25 eggs per female. The sex ratio was 2:1. Parthenogenic females produced only males (arrhentoky). Under natural conditions the white mite was controlled by phytoseiid predatory mites.
