SituationFounded in 2000, Sagacent Technologies is a comprehensive IT business providing networking, infrastructure, and security support to small and medium-sized businesses in and around San Jose, California. The company specializes in disaster prevention services, establishing failsafe computing systems to back up critical business data.

With IT services as its primary offering, Sagacent relies heavily on its own computers—both desktops and notebooks—to service its customers. The previous operating systems often hindered staff efficiency, while limited battery life and power management slowed down the work of mobile employees.

Sagacent needed a system that would provide the kind of quick, reliable service the company is known for, while enhancing its business image and providing intelligent mobility features for on-the-go employees.

SolutionWith the powerful combination of the new HP ProBook 5310m running the Windows 7 Professional operating system, Sagacent found a solution that improved computing speed, efficiency, and endurance in the field.*

With over 30 years of experience as an IT professional and computer expert, Sagacent's Founder and President, Ed Correia, knows what it takes to be successful in new technology advancements. Correia founded Sagacent Technologies 10 years ago with the goal of providing superior—yet affordable—IT

solutions to small and medium-sized businesses.

Correia maintains his company’s success by proactively meeting each client's hardware, software, and operating system needs, making Windows 7 Professional a perfect fit for the way Sagacent does business. "Windows 7 Professional is the best operating system Microsoft has come out with," says Correia. "It’s a complete solution–nothing is missing. Microsoft got it right from the start."

Correia is also a big fan of the HP ProBook 5310m Notebook PC. Pairing top-notch functionality and a stylish yet durable appearance, the new notebook is widely popular among Sagacent's staff. It’s also ideal for clients who work in the medical, legal, accounting, insurance, and finance industries.

"The HP ProBook 5310m is a great fit for the SMB market in general and my client base in particular," says Correia. "I have a lot of high-end, tech-savvy professional customers in Silicon Valley. The high-quality look, feel, and performance of the 5310m make a great impression.”

Benefits

Making Work Faster and EasierThe combination of Windows 7 Professional with the HP ProBook 5310m offers an unprecedented speed in starting up, shutting down, and resuming from Sleep and Standby modes**.

"You close the lid and it goes into standby, and you open the lid and it starts up again.

It's so fast!" observes Correia. "The machine resumes from sleep and standby much more reliably than our old PCs." Unlike older operating systems, Windows 7 is easy to use and very intuitive to learn, even for users who are less than tech-savvy. "Windows 7 Professional just feels right – it really is a great productivity booster," says Correia. "We are so excited about this operating system that we want to tell everyone about it.”

Correia especially looks forward to sharing the improved functions of Windows 7 and the HP ProBook 5310m with his professional clients. "Professionals want high-quality systems that work – and work quickly. There's no shortage of cheap, plastic notebooks out there. Everyone I've shown this unit to has been very interested in what it can do and how they can get one. It's a big departure from the other machines out there."

Computers That Just Keep GoingOne of the key features of the new system is the improved battery life and power management. The HP ProBook 5310m is designed to charge rapidly, up to 90 percent in 90 minutes.*** It also includes settings that modulate energy use when the notebook is running on battery power, such as the ambient light sensor that balances power usage against the risk of eyestrain in dim light. In addition, Windows 7 Professional offers a wealth of tools that can be used to reduce energy usage, both in the office and on the go.

“HP really deserves kudos for getting so much battery life out of what's really a pretty powerful notebook," says Correia.

"Aside from the stunning appearance, it functions amazingly well. I've pulled out the battery a few times and looked at it, wondering, how is this powering this notebook for so long?”

New Tools for Accessibility and EfficiencyNew Windows 7 features, like the customization options with Aero desktop personalization, have helped to save users time and streamline everyday tasks. Tools like Snap, which allows two documents or applications to be placed side by side for instant comparison, are especially useful while multitasking. "Snap is a simple and visually compelling way to display two documents side by side, making data comparison a breeze," says Correia. He also praises the improved search function. "Search in Windows 7 Professional is amazing. I can easily search for contacts or documents, and the Libraries feature shows the results by application, file folder, and even Outlook emails and contacts. This is a huge gain in productivity."

Another big time-saver for Sagacent has been the automatic HP Drive Encryption security function offered by the HP ProBook 5310m. "Full disk encryption is awesome," Correia says. "We think it should be standard on any professional notebook going out into the field."

Environmentally Friendly Functionality Saves Power and the EnvironmentAs an added bonus, the HP ProBook 5310m is BFR/PVC-free**** and has a lower environmental impact than most notebooks. Despite its powerful functionality, it boasts reduced power

consumption. All of these features make the ProBook a popular choice among Sagacent's staff and clients. “The green aspect of this technology resonates with me," says Correia. "My customer base wants easy ways to reduce energy consumption—especially when they’re working outside of the office. Windows 7 Professional and HP give us a competitive advantage through their offerings designed with the environment in mind."

*As part of the solution deployment through the Windows 7 SMB Evidence Program, the customer received complimentary notebooks and technical support from Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard.**New HP Business laptops with Windows 7 can start up to 41 percent faster and have shut-down times that are up to 30 percent faster than an older laptop. Test results compare HP 5310 systems with identical configurations with one system running Windows XP Professional SP3 (Genuine) and the second system running Windows 7 Professional (Genuine). Actual results may vary based on system configuration and performance will vary over time depending on software installed.***Fast Charge Technology recharges the battery up to 90 percent within 90 minutes when the system is off.****Meeting the evolving definition of 'BFR/PVC-free' as set forth in the "iNEMI Position Statement on the 'Definition of Low-Halogen' Electronics (BFR/CFR/PVC-Free)’". Plastic parts contain <

1000 ppm (0.1%) of bromine [if the Br source is from BFRs] and < 1000 ppm (0.1%) of chlorine [if the Cl source is from CFRs or PVC or PVC copolymers]. Power supply and power cords are not BFR/PVC-free. Service parts after purchase may not be BFR/PVC-free.
