Suggested Learning Programme for Week 8th- 12th June

Hi everyone,

Virtual Sports Day - this doesn’t have to be completed in a day at all but rather over the course of a few days unless you would prefer to do it in one day as a whole which is fine too! Two teachers have put together this amazing website containing activities and videos to help create a fun Sports Week at home. I will now try and talk you through the website and hopefully with weather will improve to complete these activities. Also if you would like to send some photos on that would be great, but no pressure to do so.

The link to the website is here: https://sites.google.com/holyangelsns.ie/virtualsportsday/home

It will bring you to the above homepage which will work on Computers, Ipads, Tablets and Smartphones.

If you scroll down the Homepage you will see the following choices:

Page 2:   · Web viewOf course you might prefer to keep it local and make a picnic this week and visit somewhere in your area for a walk or adventure and have your picnic. Even the back

Click on ‘Our Lists’ first. This will show you any equipment you need which they have adapted especially to things that we would have at home. It also shows you some ‘goodies’ that might be nice to have as a treat for the day.

Go back to the Homepage and click on ‘The Activities’ button. This will show you a list of games that can be played over the week or a day. Each section has instructions and also a demonstration video so you won’t get lost! It is great. In the photos below I clicked on Traditional Sports Day Activities and looked at some of the videos with it.

The last choice on the Homepage is Downloads. This is for Assessment of Learning and planning. It has a timetable for the Day if you like and Learning Logs for each of the skills - running, throwing etc. This is optional but if you do want to use it please send it onto me as a record of what your child did and I can keep it in a portfolio. A photograph of it in an email is perfect.

Virtual School TourBelow are some links to Virtual School Tours that you could do and some fun escape room challenges too! Of course you might prefer to keep it local and make a picnic this week and visit somewhere in your area for a walk or adventure and have your picnic. Even the back garden is fine too! We are blessed with so many wonderful places on our doorstep like Enniscoe Woods and Lough Conn - Gortnor Abbey. With the 20km restriction in place it also opens the possibility of going a little further.

Maths: Page 84- 89: Revision of combining. Fill in the houses of 1-5.

Page 31: (At Home Book) revision of zero. Children reinforce the concept of their understanding of the empty set.

This week we are covering the concept of Money. This concept can be difficult for some children to understand so be patient. Discuss with your child why we need money, what it is used for, where it comes from? etc. Inform children that long ago they had no money, that instead they swapped items with one another. In junior Infants children only need to familiarise themselves with coins 1c, 2c, 5c. Show the children coins from 1c, 2c, 5c and ask them can they recognise the coins. See can children identify how they can make 3c (2c and 1c), 4c (2c and 2c). Can we make 2c (1c and 1c) another way, Can we make 5c (2c and 2c and 1c) another way, etc

Page 90: This page reinforces the concept that a 2c coin can be represented by two 1c coins. It also consolidates the fact that the three coins are of different sizes. Also it is important at this stage that children recognise that on the back of the coin there is no amount just the symbol of the harp-hence the reason coins sometimes need to be recognised by colour/size.

Page 91: On this page children total the amounts of money in each box. They then break down the different amounts counted by partitioning them.

Page 92: Children recognise the correct amount of coinage needed to buy each item.

Page 93: Recognise the correct number of coins a colour a box for each coin.

Cén aois thú? What age are you?

Tá mé ceithre bliana d’aois. I am 4 years old.

Tá mé cúig bliana d’aois. I am 5 years old.

Tá mé sé bliana d’aois. I am 6 years old.

Writing:

The picture above contains word boxes 6. Encourage your child to sound out, blend and write five words each day. The children had completed the first five words prior to schools closing. You can begin with the word ‘as’. If your child has difficulty in sounding and blending the word, you can help them by blending the sounds together quickly for them. Once they recognise the word you (the parent) can write the word on a piece of paper. Then encourage your child to Look at the word, Say the word and practise writing the word beside the one that you have already written. You can also encourage your child to put the word into a sentence orally. Also if you feel your child is able to write these words with little difficulty, encourage them to put the word into a sentences orally- you write the sentence for the child and they can copy it underneath. Be sure to make them aware of what a finger space is between each word and the full stop at the end of the sentence. Again if you feel this is too much for your child, then that is okay too. Work at a pace that suits your child.

animals. Look at the people at the river, discuss what they are doing. Have the children seen any other activities at the river.

Page 74: If possible take a visit to a local river, discuss the plants and animals that they may see at the river. Discuss how the river may change its look during the various seasons i.e. summer time, winter, etcRecord your results by drawing one plant and one animal that you will find at this habitat.
