Read part of ‘The Tin Forest’ story below:

In the house lived an old man. Every day he tried to tidy away the rubbish, sifting and sorting, burning and burying. And every night the old man dreamed. He dreamed he lived in a jungle full of wild forest animals. There were colourful birds, tropical trees, exotic flowers, toucans, tree frogs and tigers.

Are they any words you don’t know? Can you find out what they mean?

Can you draw pictures to go with the words?

Challenge: Can you think of any other words they could have used? For example instead of ‘old man’, what other words could they use to describe him? Instead of ‘colourful birds’, what other words could they use to describe the birds?

Today we are learning about verbs. Can you remember what verbs are?

Verbs are action words they describe what someone or something is doing. Listen to the story of the tin forest again. When you listen, make a list of all of the verbs you hear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j_XPFxy5js

Look at your list of verbs. Which ones do you think are the most interesting? Can you use the most interesting verbs in a sentence?

Phonics Children are going to be exploring words that same the sound but are different. We call these homophones

NumberYear 2

Children are going to be looking at solving number patterns using addition and their knowledge of number bond.

Look at the number problem of 4+3 and 14+ 3… what is the same what is different?

Children to talk about what they can notice (ones digit the same, but tens number has changed). How will this change the answer?

Chidlren to then look at further numbers in this pattern 24 + 3, 34 + 3, 44 + 3 – does the pattern stay the same? Can they use their number bond consistently as they complete the work.

Have a look at some further number patterns and see whether the children are able to use their number bonds to help them to secure their understanding.

Children to be working on subtraction problems today.

Children to be using either counters (pasta, pencils, dolls) to help them to solve the different subtraction problems.

Children could also be using number lines to help them to solve the problems. On a number line, children circle the biggest number first, they then do jumps above the number line. The jumps need to go backwards so that the numbers are getting smaller each time they jump backwards.

Children are going to be solving problems such as 18 – 7, 29 – 6 etc

Children to be working on solving subtraction problems, taking away 10 each time.

Children to be using a number line to look at the numbers and see what changes when they take away 10.

24 – 10 =… what part of the number changes is this the same for all numbers when taking away 10? (tens digit changes (2 in this case) and the ones digit stays the same).

Children to look at solving a variety of problems using taking away a single 10 and then multiples of 10 i.e. 20, 30 from 2 digit numbers.

Children can then have a look at some problems and work out whether they are true or false, explaining why this is.

Chidlren to working on solving a variety of word problems using their subtraction skills.

Children can solve these mentally or by using one of the skills that they have developed when using subtraction.

When children are reading the problems, they need to be making sure that they are underlining the key information i.e. the numbers that are going to be in their number sentence.

Children to record their number sentences.

Tom the parrot had 28 berries. He ate 7 of them. How many berries does he have remaining?
