You can use the paper provided in the pack you plan to pick up, a notebook you have at home, or the Google Classroom Reading and Writing Check-in document that has been set up. For each passage have your child underline the words with the focused letter pattern, then read the story out loud at least 3 times so that they can read it smoothly without hesitation or mistakes. (They are used to this routine in class.) Once they are done, they can do the same for any other passage in the pack until the 20 minutes are up. Reading Response: After reading the story, the students need to answer the questions in complete sentences. They then need to check using the writing rules checklist at the bottom of the page. Literacy Calendar for Phonics Based ReadersWord Warm-up: Follow the directions the adult reads to you to get your brain ready for the letter pattern you are focusing on.
Read: Set the timer for 20 minutes. Underline the words with the focused letter pattern and read the story out loud at least 3 times so that you can read it smoothly without hesitation or mistakes. Read on or reread other passages until the timer goes off.
Respond: On the back of the sheet: answer the questions in complete sentences. Check your work for writing rules.
Write: Write a daily journal entry or pick a prompt that interests you on the back of the directions sheet and write for 15 minutes. If you want to continue a prompt from the day before, that is lovely but please mark the new date in the margins. I can’t wait to read what you write!!!
