Questions 22-29. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :

Progress in human knowledge has, no doubt, led to the development of applied sciences and technology which has, in turn , profoundly altered man's environment. In primitive societies the expectation of life is still about 30 years ; even in a country like England in the nineteenth century it was only about 40 years whereas today it is around 70 years. In many countries like India and Sri Lanka the death rate has been halved by wiping out malaria, small-pox and such other deadly diseases. At the same time, the world has failed to control births, which in developing countries run at 40 to 45 per thousand compared with 15 to 120 per thousand in Europe. The result is a dangerous population explosion.

About two centuries ago in 1789, the Rev. Thomas Malthus, the unknown English curate, published a booklet called Essay on Population. In this book Malthus made a terrible prognosis that human population will soon outrun the means of subsistence. We do not know when the doom will fall but things have not exactly worked out the way that Malthus predicted because food production has, in a way, kept pace with the growth of population. Malthusian theory predicted that population would increase in geometrical progression while agricultural production would increase in arithmetical progression. The real problem is one of the imbalances in population growth and food in the different parts of the world.

The advanced nations face no population problem since they were steady setting down to the zero growth rate in population. Zero growth means that population will keep steady through generations and that births will be just enough to compensate deaths, never more. Advanced countries, by and large, remained surplus in food production. It is the developing and underdeveloped countries that have the dual problems, heavy shortages in vital articles of food and galloping population figures ; as a result, the standard of living is very low. One may think that only the developing and

underdeveloped countries that have this problem but the developed countries cannot live in isolation in an age of supersonic transport. The threat of unmanageable population pressure is very much . like the threat of nuclear war.

I went to teaching for all the wrong reasons-short hours, long holidays, and the idea that I'c have enough time to set up my own business. It didn't work out at all. I ought to have knowr better, as my father was a teacher, but he worked in a grammar school. His job was very different from mine, much more settled. It was easier for him to know what he was doing. If he saw m3 classroom, I'm sure he would be absolutely horrified. He just can't envisage what my school is like

Before I became a teacher, I worked as a designer in industry. It was a dead-end job with nc chance of making progress unless you were brilliant. So I went on a post-graduate teaching cours( for a year, which I enjoyed. It was much better than sitting in a factory working out patterr designs. I liked the academic side, but the practical side wasn't very useful, though I understand it's much better now.

My first job was at a small primary school in an expensive dormitory village, very different from my present school. All the children were smartly dressed in uniform. They were expected tc move quietly from one classroom to another and to eat their lunch in total silence except for a short period of quiet chatting at the end. It was a nice little preparatory school which was what the parents wanted.

Although I liked the head of the school personally, he reminded me of my father ; I didn't feel that working in a school like that was doing a lot for society. I wouldn't call myself a political person. but I had developed a bit of social conscience by that time. So I left after two years.

After a while, I met with a chap I'd worked with before, who was setting up a handicraft workshop. It seemed a good idea so I threw in my lot with him, lost a lot of money and just avoided being made a bankrupt. When the business collapsed, I just wanted to get away. I'd met my present wife by then and we went abroad for four months. When we returned, I needed money desperately, so I went back to teaching.

Questions 12-22. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below :

You will find that the average feature film often ignores most of the major problems of life and, instead, encourages us to forget them. Such films are called escapists. They are popular because they enable millions of people to forget the difficulties of everyday life and to relax. To enable them to do this it is obvious that the screen stories must not be too closely related to life. This escapism seems justifiable when you first think of it, but it does not help in the long run because one cannot escape from life. The most intelligent directors and script writers see that there is often drama, heroism, suspense and humour in the lives of ordinary people, and they show this in their films. They give us stories in which we can recognise the sort of people we know, or have met or have heard about-people in whom we can believe. Million Like Us was that sort of film. The truly great film is the kind that will help us to escape from escapism and meet truth face to face, and help us to understand life better.

4uestion 34. Write a summary of the following passage reducing it to one third of its length : This programme I carried on consistently, over and over, for about ten years, and after that I still kept a Dickens book on hand, so to speak, to dip into and feel myself at home again. Today I have for him a feeling which I have for no other human soul. He opened my eyes to people, he taught me to love all sorts of people, high and low, rich and poor, the old and little children. He taught me to hate hypocrisy and pious mouthing of unctuous words. He taught me that beneath gruffness there may be kindness, and that kindness is the sweetest thing in the world, and goodness is the best thing in the world. He taught me to despise money grubbing. People today say he is obvious and sentimental and childish in his analysis of character. It may be so, and yet I have found people surprisingly like those he wrote about the good a little less undiluted, pherhaps, and the evil a little more mixed. And I do not regret that simplicity of his, for it had its own virtue. The virtue was a great zest for life. If he was everything black and white, it was because life rushed out of him strong and clear, full of love and hate. He gave me that zest, that immense joy in life and in people, and in their variety.

given below : When my wife, daughter and I were travelling in a rented car through Nottingham, England, on

We were surprised when he removed his tall helmet, opened the back door and slid in beside our daughter. "It'll be much easier to show you", he explained.

Off we went through a series of left and right turns, traffic lights and even a short jaunt up one way lane the wrong way. Twenty minutes later we arrived at a main intersection. "Now you'll be all right", announced our guide: "Just turn here, stay on the road for eight or nine kilometers. and you're there". With that, he opened the door, got out, replaced his helmet and strode briskly off.

(5 marks) 43. Make a summary of the following passage reducing it to one third of its length :

Language, they say, is the lens through which human beings perceive the world. If so, English is perhaps the most distorting lens through which to see animals. It has perpetuated a cross-eyed view of bird, beasts, fish and fowl. They very word "animal" connotes the brutish and the sensual. Animal instinct implies baseness and vulgarity. The language transfers negative human traits to animals, making the former appear as characteristics of the latter. Thus, the chicken is cowardly, frightened, faint-hearted : the goat lustful and foolish : the bear rough and illbred-Butterflies are flightly, seals slippery and foxes notorious for craftiness and cunning. Much the worst are the reptiles. particularly the snake, creeping, base, malignant, abject, ungrateful and treacherous. "It is always in the grass".

Each species carries its denigration forever embedded in its English name giving the language as many unpleasant adjectives as it could possibly want.'To be bull-headed is to be impetuous and obstinate ; the catfish woman is spiteful and backbiting. An elephant's walk is ungainly, bird-brains are to be ridiculed and the herd mentality draws only contempt. You can be as blind as a bat and batty, if you are crazy as well.

44. Prepare notes on the following passage : The concept of curriculum has undergone a sea change. It is no more mere classroom

learning. It is learning from interpersonal relationships. One may master facts within the four walls of the room, but one can acquire values and virtues in a game field. It is this education which prepares a pupil for life. Pupils imbibe a spirit of unity, learn to treat victory and defeat alike and are trained to adapt themselves to the needs of the situation. They are aware that they cannot function in isolation and learn to co-exist. Since playing games gives scope for such value-based learnings, it should play an integral role in our educational system. Last of all, games develop a good physique without which an individual can hardly exist.

Questions 16-25. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below :-

Perhaps one of the most weird and fascinating characters I met during my travels was the Rose-bettle Man. He had a fairy tale air about him that was impossible to resist, and I used to look forward eagerly to my infrequent meetings with him. I first saw him on a high, lonely road leading to one of the remote mountain villages. I could see him for he was playing a rippling tune on a shepherd's pipe, breaking off now and then to sing a few words in a curious nasal voice. As he rounded the corner both Roger and I stopped and stared at him in amazement. He had a sharp, fox-like face with large, slanting eyes of such a dark brown that they appeared black.

16. The Managing Director of Steel Products (P) Ltd. was determining, what marketing strategy wouldbe appropriate to counter the effect of change from the Seller's market into buyer's in the case of his company's products. More particularly he wanted his company to meet the competition offered by the well established competition.

In view of the shift from the Seller's to a buyer market, the customers had become selective in their choice of material, looked for better service and were in a position to dictate their own terms. The Managing Director decided on the following marketing strategy.

(a) Best Quality control. (b) Timely Supplies.(c) Trained Sales personnel. (d) Credit facilities.(e) Reasonable prices. (f) Good Advertising.,(g) Penetrating new markets.

Questions :

1 What is your opinion of the new strategy followed by this company ?2 What are merits of the adopted strategy ?3 Are there any drawbacks of the adopted strategy ?4 Can you suggest improvements in new strategy adopted by the company ?

17. Carol King is frustated with her Sales people and is even thinking about hiring some "new blood". Mrs. King has been operating the king furniture company for 10 years and has slowly built the Sales to Rs.5 crores a year. Her store is located in the down town shopping area of a growing city of 150,000 population. This is basically a factory city, and she has deliberating selected "blue collar" workers as her target market. She carries some higher-priced furniture lines but stresses.budget combinations and easy credit terms.

Mrs. King is concerned that she may have reached the limit of her sales growth-her sales have not been increasing during the last 2 years though total furniture sales have been increasing in the city as new people move in. Her newspaper advertisements seems to attract her target customers, but many of these people come in, shop around and leave. Some of them come, back but most of them do not. She thinks her product selections are very suitable for her target market and is concerned that her sales people don't close more sales with potential customers. She has discussed this matter several times with her 10 sales people. Her staff feels they should treat all customers a like-the way they personally want to be treated. They argue that their role is just to answer questions when asked-not to make suggestions or help customers make decisions. They think this would be too "hard sill".

She tried to convice her sales people that customers must be treated on an individual basis-and that some customers need more encouragement and suggestion than others. She tried to explain the differences in demographic groups and pointed out that her store was definitely trying to aim at specific people. She argued that they (The Sales People) should cater to the needs and attitudes of their customer-and think less about how they would like to be treated themselves. Further Mrs. King announced that she is considering changing the sales compensation plan or hiring "new blood", if the present employees can't do a better job "Currently the sales representatives are paid Rs. 36,000 per year plus a 1% commission on sales.

1 Evaluate Mrs. King's strategy planning and thinking about her sales people.

2 What should she do now ? Explain. (2 x 20 = 40 marks)

16. "A point is a point", said Munirathnam, the foreman. "But I simply cannot hire or hold our skilled men with these rates." He referred to rates based on a straight wage line fitted to the point values and wages rate on a dozen key jobs. The new rates had been in effect only for a short time. They were established following job evaluation on a unilateral basis by the employer. The wage line raised many job rates in the shop but it reduced those at the top. The job evaluation programme was undertaken to provide a basis for a sound wage structure throughout the shop. An interdepartmental committee conducted it. Comparisons of earlier rates with wage survey data had indicated that the old structure was not in line with those of the industry. The new wage line was keyed to rates shown in the survey. Analyse this situation.

16 A small group of managers at Falcon Computer met regularly on Wednesday mornings to develop a stateiient capturing what they considered to be the "Falcon culture." Their discussions were wide-ranging, covering what they thought their firm's culture was, what it should be, and how to create it. Implicitly, they were probably influenced by other firms in their environment, as they were located in the Silicon Valley area of California.

Falcon Computer was a new firm, having been created just eight months earlier. Since the corporation was still in the "start-up" phase, managers decided that is would be timely to create and instill the type of culture they thought would be most appropriate for their organization. After several weeks of brainstorming, writing, debating, and re-writing, the management group eventually produced a document called "Falcon Values" which described the culture of the company as they saw it. The organizational culture statement covered such topics as "Treatment of Customers", "Relations among Work Colleagues", "Preferred Style of Social Communication, "Our Decision-Making Process," and "The nature of Our Working Environment".

Peter Richards read over the Falcon Values statement shortly after he was hired as a software trainer. After observing managerial and employee behaviors as Falcon for a few weeks, he was struck by the apparently wide discrepancy between the values expressed in the document and what he observed as actual practice within the organization. For example, the Falcon Value statement contained statements like : "Quality : Attention to detail is our trademark ; our goal is to do it right the first time. We intend to deliver defect-free products and services to our customers on the date promised". However, Richards had already seen shipping reports showing that a number of defective computers were being shipped to customers. And his personal experience supported his worst fears, when he borrowed four brand-new Falcon computers from the shipping room for use in a training class and found that only two of them started up correctly without additional technical work on his part.

Another example of the difference between the Falcon Values and actual practice concerned the statement on communication. It stated that "Managing by personal communication is part of the Falcon way. We value and encourage open, direct person-to-person communication as part of our daily routine". "Executive bragged for example, about how they arranged their chairs in circle to show equality and facilitate open communications whenever they met to discuss the Falcon values document. Richards had heard the "Open communication" buzzword a lot since coming to Falcon, but hadn't seen much evidence of it. As a matter of fact, all other meetings used a more traditional layout, with top executive at the front of the room. Peter believed that the real organizational culture that was developing at Falcon was characterized by secrecy and communications that followed the formal chain of command. Even the Falcon Values document, Richards was told, had been created in secret.

Peter soon'became'disillusioned. He confided in a coworker on afternoon that "The Falcon Values document was so at variance with what people saw every day that very few of them took it seriously" Employees quickly learned what was truly emphasized in the organization-hierarchy, secrecy, and expediency-and focused upon these things instead, ignoring many of the concepts incorporated in the values document. Despite his frustration, Richards stayed with Falcon until it filed for bankruptcy two years later. "Next time," he thought to himself as he cleaned out his desk, "I'll pay more attention to what is actually going on, and less to what top management says is true. Furthermore," he thought to himself, "I guess you just can't create values."

1 What is more important, the statements in a corporate culture document of managerial 4behaviour ?

2 Why did the Falcon executives act as they did ?

3 Why don't employees like Richards "blow the whistle" on Falcon, and challenge theinconsistency between values and behaviour ?

4 How can executives go about changing the old values that govern an organization ?

17 THE PIANO BUILDER.Waverly Bird builds pianos from scratch. He is a piano consultant to a piano manufacturer. He is on call and works about one week a month, including some travel to solve problems of customers. He also rebuilds about a dozen grand pianos every year for special customers ; but, according to Bird, the most satisfying part of his life is his hobby of building pianos from the beginning. "It's the part that keeps a man alive", he says. The challenge of the work is what lures Bird onward. He derives satisfaction from precision and quality, and he comments, "Details make the difference. When you cut a little corner here and a little corner there, you've cut a big hole. A piano is like the human body ; all the parts are important."

Bird has a substantial challenge in making a whole piano. His work requires skills in cabinet making, metal working, and engineering, with knowledge of acoustics and a keen ear for music. It requires great precision, because a tiny misalignment would ruin a piano's tune. It also requires versatility, ranging from a keyboard that is balanced to respond to the touch of a finger all the way to the pinblock that must withstand up to 20 tons of pressure. Bird had to make many of his own piano construction tools.

Bird has built forty pianos in his thirty-four-year career. Though construction take nearly a year, he sells his pianos at the modest price of a commercial piano. He is seeking not money but challenge and satisfaction. He says, "The whole business is a series of closed doors. You learn one thing, and there's another closed door waiting to be opened." Bird says his big dream is to build a grand piano : "It is the one thing I haven't done yet and want to do."

Questions :

1 Discuss the nature of Bird's motivation in building pianos. What are his drives and needs ? would a behaviour modification program affect his motivation ? (Why or why not ?) What would be the effect of setting a goal of two pianos per year for him ?

2 How could a manufacturer of pianos build the same motivation into its employees as Bird has now ?

17 Barney Kohl is!a police officer assigned to the juvenile department of a large city. Part of the oath that Barney took was to. uphold the law consistently for all people. The scope of his job includes investigation of youth drug traffic, alcoholism, and vandalism. Barney is also involved in the community outreach program, which works to build greater under standing and cooperation between the police department and the youth of the community.

Last night, Barney ran into one of the most difficult, if not the most dangerous, problems he has ever faced. While on patrol, he received a radio report to investigate some possible vandalism at a junior high school. Upon reaching the scene he found five youths, aged twelve to fifteen, engaged in malicious acts of vandalism. They were throwing rocks through the windows and had splashed paint against the walls. After calling backup units, he proceeded to run down and arrest the vandals. He was successfully holding the group at bay and was waiting for the backup unit to arrive when he noticed that one of the offenders was his neighbors son. The city has a parents' responsibility law that makes parent financially liable for the damage caused by their children's actions. The damage looked as if it would be considerable, probably running into the thousands of dollars. Barney knows his neighbour can't afford the costs because he has a physical disability and is out of work. He also knows this incident will lead to great problems in their family and, of course, would place a great strain on his own and his family's relationship with the neighbours.

(a) What kind of conflict is this police officer experiencing ? What should he do ?

(b) How do you explain the boy's behaviour in terms of the frustration model ?

(c) If you were asked to conduct a training seminar for police officers on the management of conflict, what topics would you cover ? What strategies would you suggest ?
