Robert Ahern has retired from the Police Department effective
February 23, 2002; and
WHEREAS:Robert was appointed a Patrolman on October 2, 1967;
and
WHEREAS:Robert received numerous commendations from the general
public for his outstanding performance; and
WHEREAS:Robert received special training in defense tactics from
the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Commission; now therefore be
it
RESOLVED:That this City Council go on record expressing its
appreciation to Robert Ahern for his thirty-two years of dedicated
service to the citizens and to the City of Cambridge and wish him
much happiness in his retirement; and be it further
RESOLVED:That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to
forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to Robert

WHEREAS:At St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church there is
a program known as the "Sons of Allen" Program; and
WHEREAS:The "Sons of Allen" is a program for boys between the
ages of 6-12, which is a rites of passage into manhood program;

WHEREAS:The program instills in each boy a love of God, self and
humanity; and
WHEREAS:There are seven guiding principles, Religion, Respect,
Responsibility, Restraint, Reciprocity, Rhythm and Redemption;
and
WHEREAS:On March 17, 2002 the "Sons of Allen" recited poetry and
prose in a most powerful way; now therefore be it
RESOLVED:That this City Council go on record commending Adam
Cooper for his poetry reading “No Apology”; and be it further

Justice with Peace sponsored an event entitled “Take Back the
Music, Take Back
Our Freedoms”; and
WHEREAS:The event was an evening of songs, spoken word, folk,
hip-hop and jazz for
peace and justice; and
WHEREAS:The event featured songs from the list of 200 songs that
Clear Channel
Communications, owner of over 1200 radio stations nation wide,
in 47 of the 50
largest U.S. cities, directed its stations not to play after
September 11th, including
Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the Wind” and Louis Armstrong’s “What a
Wonderful
World;’ and
WHEREAS:The event also focused on the limitation of personal
liberties effected by the USA
Patriots Act adopted by Congress; and
WHEREAS:Over 300 people attended this event; now therefore be
it
RESOLVED:That the City Council go on record congratulating all
of the participants in this
worthwhile event and thanking the Cambridge Peace Commission and
United
for Justice with Peace for sponsoring the “Take Back the Music,

to raise awareness about unfair pay in America, drawing particular

earn less; and
WHEREAS:Equal Pay Day is observed on a Tuesday, symbolizing the
point into the new week that a woman must work in order to earn the
wages paid to a man in the previous week; now therefore be it

while fighting censorship, and winning a Peabody Award; and

as the first woman justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial
Court, serving from 1978 to 2000, fighting for issues including
family leave, medical care, gender equity, and minority rights;

student at Cambridge Rindge and Latin creating dialog about the
Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), leading
efforts to inform students and the public about education reform

WHEREAS:Over the past 50 years, the United States has achieved
significant increases in life expectancy and reductions in the
incidence of injury, disability, and disease; and
WHEREAS:Public Health is credited with the majority of health
improvements and increases in years of life expectancy; and
WHEREAS:With the use of population-based strategies for disease
and injury prevention, public health has contributed to the decline
in illness and injury, including heart disease and stroke,
tobacco-related diseases, infectious disease, and motor vehicle and
workplace injuries; and
WHEREAS:National Public Health week provides an opportunity for
the to learn about public health success stories including the
elimination of polio, reduction in childhood lead poisoning and
decline in tooth decay, immunization against infectious disease,
maintaining healthy nutritional standards and providing good
prenatal and postnatal care; and
WHEREAS:The Cambridge Public Health Department has been a leader
in the development of Emergency Planning preparedness against
threats of bioterrorism; and
WHEREAS:The Cambridge Public Health Department has spearheaded
efforts to increase physical activity and to grow Cambridge as a
premiere walking city; and
WHEREAS:The Cambridge Public Health Department has provided
national models of “best practice” that include work in
Environmental health and policy, Childhood Asthma, Physical
Activity and Overweight prevention, and prevention of infectious
disease; and
WHEREAS:The Cambridge Public Health Department has been a
leading partner in addressing communicable diseases, domestic
violence, homelessness, literacy, and West Nile Virus. Furthermore,
fostering a network of partnerships within the extraordinary
community of Cambridge professionals in the ongoing provision of
traditional and progressive public health services, programs, and
prevention education; and
WHEREAS:The Cambridge Public Health Department celebrates
National Public Health Week, April 1-7, 2002; and
WHEREAS:The City of Cambridge extends its appreciation to the
Cambridge Public Health Department for the collaborative spirit of
governance in achieving community health; now therefore be it
