PERFORMANCEWorking Range: A longer working range reduces the need for reaching for more efficient scanning and less fatigue. Longer range also allows the scanner to “eat up” bar codes as they are brought to the scanner.

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

The 800i offers shorter working ranges on all densities.1D Linear Codes

5 mil 0 to 2.5 cm / 0 to 1.0 in

7.5 mil 0 to 8.2 cm / 0 to 3.2 in

10 mil 0 to 12.7 cm / 0 to 5.0 in

13 mil 0 to 15.2 cm / 0 to 6.0 in

2D Codes

6.6 mil PDF417 0 to 7.6 cm / 0 to 3.0 in

10 mil Data Matrix 0.6 to 3.1 cm / 0.2 to 1.2 in

The DS9208 offers better working ranges on all densities.1D Linear Codes

5 mil 0 to 11.4 cm / 0 to 4.5 in

7.5 mil 0 to 16.5 cm / 0 to 6.5 in

10 mil 0 to 21.6 cm / 0 to 8.5 in

13 mil 0 to 26.7 cm / 0 to 10.5 in

2D Codes

6.6 mil PDF417 0 to 9.6 cm / 0 to 3.8 in

10 mil Data Matrix 0 to 11.9 cm / 0 to 4.7 in

Throughput Performance:A “basket” containing sample items is used to test throughput performance. A stopwatch captures the time it takes for an operator to scan all of the items in the basket. After performing 5 trials using each scanner the “average throughput time” is calculated for each scanner and compared. In our in-house tests the DS9208 scanned an average of 9.25% faster than the 800i. Note: One of the items (a chocolate star on a stick) containing a 6.8mil, 53% UPC-A bar code had to be removed from the test because the 800i could not decode it.

Image Capture Capabilities:The Magellan 800i and the DS9208 have 752x480 sensors yet the captured image on the 800i is cropped effectively resulting in a 640x480 format. Further, the 800i does not support BMP and TIFF formats and does not support Signature Capture.

FEATURES DATALOGIC MAGELLAN 800I SYMBOL DS9208

Default Format 640x480 JPEG 752x480 JPEG

File Formats JPEG BMP, JPEG and TIFF

Signature Capture None Supported

Magellan 800i has a 752x480 sensor, yet the captured image is cropped effectively resulting in a 640x480 format.

Pick List/Trigger Mode:Pick List or trigger mode is required for picking a single bar code to decode from a group or list of bar codes (e.g. bar code menu or pick list).

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

Pick List is not supported. The DS9208’s side mounted trigger and bright red aiming dot allow users to easily scan a specific bar code from a bar code menu or pick list.

AMBER LED AIMING DOT ON THE DS9208

Field Of View (FOV):The active scan area is the area of the scanner (exit window) where the Field of View (FOV) of the imaging engine is centered. The active scan area acts as the “eyes” of the scanner.

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

The Field of View (FOV) of the 800i is at the bottom of the window making it more difficult to scan taller items. Its off-centered position is also misleading when it comes to lining up an object to be scanned.

The Field of View (FOV) of the DS9208 is higher than that of the 800i allowing the DS9208 to scan taller items, even though it is a more compact scanner. It is also centered in the scan window for a more predictable scan target.

Spherical Exit Window:A spherically shaped exit window improves scanning performance by minimizing stray light and reducing reflections to the imaging sensor.

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

Not supported. The DS9208 utilizes an industry-first spherically shaped exit window made with PMMA acrylic with a hardness rating of 2H offering an optimal combination of optical performance, scratch resistance and resilience.

FORM FACTORFootprint: Space at the POS is critical for most customers and the size or footprint of the bar code scanner at the POS can often be a critical concern. A device that is too large or bulky takes up precious space that might otherwise be used for impulse items. The more space the scanner takes us, the less space that is available for other revenue generating items.

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

The Datalogic 800i is taller (15.1cm vs. 14cm) and deeper (10.9cm vs. 8cm) then the DS9208. See photos below.

The DS9208 offers the most compact footprint in its class at 14cm x 8.2cm x 8cm.

DURABILITYDrop Specification:One of the most significant quality tests we do is the drop specification test. This test measures the distance the device can fall without experiencing failure. This is an important test of durability because devices used all day every day can often be subject to these kinds of drops regularly.

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

The 800i offers only a 4’ (1.2m) drop specification. The DS9208 offers a 5’ (1.52m) drop specification over multiple temperature ranges.

Tilt Mechanism:The tilt mechanism allows a presentation scanner to be tilted forward or backward to fit each environment/application or user. The tilt mechanism needs to withstand thousands of “cycles” in order to survive the rigors of everyday use.

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

The 800i utilizes a friction based design in order to provide resistance, which will wear over time. Further, the mix of sheet metal on plastic (see below) results in a higher level of wear. If it becomes loose over time the scanner will become virtually unusable.

The DS9208 utilizes a spring based “ratchet” design minimizing friction and wear prolonging the life of the scanner. The tilt mechanism on the DS9208 has been tested successfully to tens of thousands of cycles.

POWEREnergy Usage:The amount of power a device consumes has a direct effect of the total cost of ownership over time and makes an overall impact of the environment in terms of energy conservation.

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

The Datalogic 800i uses 1.75 Watts of power (350mA @5VDC - nominal).

The DS9208 uses 35% less power or 1.15W (230mA@5VDC - nominal). The DS9208 is friendlier to the environment and will save money over time. Promote this advantage as environmentally friendly for customers with general interest in energy conservation and corporate Green initiatives.

Illumination:Imaging scanners require bright illumination in order to scan bar codes, but the illumination can be distracting to employees and annoying to customers (like having a flashlight shined in your face).

DATALOGIC SYMBOL

The scanner illumination on the 800i is always on which can be distracting AND uses more energy.

The illumination on the DS9208 turns on only when needed and automatically turns off upon a successful scan.

USB Suspend:The DS9208 supports USB suspend, the Magellan 800i does not. This violates USB requirements and costs customers extra power.
