THE GATHERING

Introit HymnO WORSHIP the Lord in the beauty of

holiness!Bow down before him; his glory proclaim; With gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,Kneel and adore him, the Lord is his name!

Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness,High on his heart he will bear it for thee,Comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness,Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be.

Fear not to enter his courts in the slendernessOf poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine:Truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness,These are the offerings to lay on his shrine.

These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,He will accept for the name that is dear;Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness,Trust for our trembling and hope for our fear.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!Bow down before him, his glory proclaim; With gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,

Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 42.1-9Thus says the Lord: Here is my servant, whom I uphold,my chosen, in whom my soul delights;I have put my spirit upon him;he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice,or make it heard in the street;bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed

until he has established justice in the earth;and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD,who created the heavens and stretched them out,who spread out the earth and what comes from it,who gives breath to the people upon itand spirit to those who walk in it:I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness,I have taken you by the hand and kept you;I have given you as a covenant to the people,a light to the nations,to open the eyes that are blind,to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.I am the LORD, that is my name;my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols.See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare;before they spring forth,I tell you of them. At the end the reader saysThis is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.New Testament Reading – Acts 10.34-43

34Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of Cornelius. ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ – he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Page 7:  · Web viewLord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God,

39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ At the end the reader says This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn – All Stand

O LOVE, how deep, how broad, how high! How passing thought and fantasyThat God, the Son of God, should takeOur mortal form, for mortals’ sake.

He sent no angel to our raceOf higher or of lower pace,But wore the robe of human frame,And he himself to this world came.

For us baptized, for us he boreHis holy fast, and hungered sore; For us temptations sharp he knew; For us the tempter overthrew.

For us to wicked men betrayed,Scourged, mocked, in crown of thorns

arrayed; For us he bore the cross’s death; For us at length gave up his breath.

Page 8:  · Web viewLord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God,

For us he rose from death again,For us he went on high to reign,For us he sent his Spirit hereTo guide, to strengthen, and to cheer.

All honour, laud, and glory be,O Jesu, Virgin-born, to thee,All glory, as is ever meet.To Father and to Paraclete. Amen.

Gospel Reading – Matthew 3.13-17Alleluia, alleluia.Christ was revealed in flesh, proclaimed among the

nations and believed in throughout the world. All Alleluia.

When the Gospel is announced the reader says Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according

to Matthew.

All Glory to you, O Lord.

13Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ 15But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’

At the conclusion of the Gospel reading8

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

The Sermon – we sit

The Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

9

Page 10:  · Web viewLord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

Prayers of Intercession – We sit or kneel

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father.

Let the people praise thee, Lord;Be by all that lived adoredLet the nations shout and sing,Glory to their Saviour King;At thy feet their tributes pay,And thy holy will obey.

Let thy people praise thee, Lord;Earth shall then her fruits afford;God to man his blessings give,Man to God devoted live; All below, and all above,One in joy, and light, and love.

H.F. Lyte 1793-1847.

Lord, accept your people’s gifts, not gold, frankincense or myrrh, but hearts and voices raised in praiseof Jesus Christ, our light and our salvation.Amen.

mighty creator, ever-living God,through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord:for at this time we celebrate your glorymade present in our midst. In the coming of the magithe King of all the world was revealed to the nations. In the waters of baptismJesus was revealed as the Christ, the Saviour sent to redeem us.In the water made winethe new creation was revealed at the wedding feast.Poverty was turned to riches, sorrow into joy. Therefore with all the angels of heavenwe lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your nameand sing our joyful hymn of praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit ,and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and winemay be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

12

Page 13:  · Web viewLord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God,

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.In the same way, after supperhe took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it,in remembrance of me.

Let us proclaim the miracle of faith:All Christ has died:

Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory,we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,we bring before you this bread and this cupand we thank you for counting us worthyto stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your peopleand gather into one in your kingdomall who share this one bread and one cup,so that we, in the company of John the Baptist and all the saints,

13

The Lord’s PrayerBelieving the promises of God,and as our Saviour taught us, so we pray:

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;thy kingdom come; thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation;but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.Amen.

Breaking of the BreadThe president breaks the consecrated bread.

We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world.

All God here among us,light in the midst of us,bring us to light and life.

Giving of CommunionThe president says the invitation to communion

Christ is the true bread which has come down from heaven. All Lord, give us this bread always.

Jesu, the very thought of theeWith sweetness fills my breast; But sweeter far thy face to see,And in thy presence rest.

Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame,Nor can the memory find, A sweeter sound than thy blest name,O Saviour of mankind!

O hope of every contrite heart,O joy of all the meek,To those who fall, how kind thou art!How good to those who seek!

But what to those who find? Ah, thisNor tongue nor pen can show; The love of Jesus, what it isNone but his loved ones know.

Recessional HymnJESUS calls us! O’er the tumultOf our life’s wild restless seaDay by day his voice is sounding,Saying, ‘Christian, follow me’:

As of old Saint Andrew heard itBy the Galilean lake,Turned from home and toil and kindred,Leaving all for his dear sake.

Jesus calls us from the worshipOf the vain world’s golden store,From each idol that would keep us,Saying ‘Christian, love me more than these’.

In our joys and in our sorrows,Days of toil and hours of ease,Still he calls, in cares and pleasures,‘Christian, love me more than these

Jesus calls us! By thy mercies,Saviour, may we hear thy call,Give our hearts to thy obedience,Serve and love thee best of all.
