(717) 432-8691 Ext. 1331 [email protected] Class Mission: To practice and become patient, tenacious, and competent readers, writers, speakers, and listeners who, because of these traits, will go on to realize success in high school and beyond Goals Which Will Benefit Your Individual Part in This Mission: Avoid procrastination, making excuses outside of yourself, and self- indulgent, time-wasting activities Take care of first things first Know that sacrifice and hard work now will benefit you later Examine yourself as a student and be honest with yourself about what you are doing right and doing wrong Fix learning problems rather than burying them (seek help to do this if necessary) Reflect on your learning and seek to fill in what you still do not understand or extend your learning for greater depth and breadth Leave your ego at the door Work toward the positive report card comments listed below Report Card Comments The positive attributes are more important to me and likewise to parents and future employers than grades. However, you will find that if a teacher is inclined to give you a positive comment over a critical one, then your grade has likely benefited from your positive efforts. It is a win-win situation.

How does an author's style affect the audience? How can dissecting a piece of literature aid in comprehension? What is an inference and how does it aid in comprehension? Why is it important to analyze special language in literature? What lessons does literature teach us? How does word choice affect the tone of a piece of literature? How does nonfiction compare/contrast with fiction?

Writing: How does a writer write for a specific purpose? How do narrative, argumentative, and informative writing compare/contrast? What organizational requirements are necessary to writing a solid essay? What process is recommended for writing a non narrative, nonfiction piece? What process is recommended for writing a narrative piece? What are the traits of a solid piece of writing? How does research writing require literacy competency in post reading synthesis?

Grammar:  How does a solid command of the English language contribute to effective communication?

What are the basic parts of speech and how do they work together to make a rich, dynamic language?

What is the difference between grammar, usage, and mechanics? How can mechanics impart meaning to a reader? What is the difference between standard and nonstandard English? How can we dissect colloquial language to determine its meaning and its standard

form? How does awareness of noun/pronoun cases allow for self-correction of usage

errors? What is the basic sentence requirement? How do we determine what is grammatically necessary in a sentence? How many sentence structures exist in the English language? How can we arrange words, phrases, and clauses to build greater sentence

variety? What are some common usage and mechanics errors to avoid?
