English: We hope our most able students in English foster their passion for the subject by making the most out of the abundant possibilities that surround us every day. We encourage them to read widely and try reading some challenging texts, communicate clearly and effectively in a range of situations and to different audiences, and write imaginatively and purposefully, no matter what the task or subject, including texts are crafted and accurate.

Go to the theatre or cinema and see an adaptation of a classic piece of well-known or classic literature.

Try to read 3 classic novels each year - notice how Language has changed over time and how different viewpoints are presented depending on the context of the text.

Read novels from outside your comfort zone - try to read 3 different genres within the year.

Read a variety of texts from different countries and cultures to develop your understanding of different world views, histories and beliefs. Consider how context is intrinsically linked to text.

Find a poem you really love, then read a collection of poems by the same author and find out about their background and influences

Start your own creative writing journal and take it with you whenever you might find an opportunity to write, or try writing a collection of poems, short stories - or if you are really brave, a novel!

Listen or watch programmes and podcasts about language and literature, finding your own specific areas of interest and developing them further by learning from the experts.

Take opportunities to be the spokesperson, to make a speech, to explain difficult situations or to teach someone something - use these opportunities to grow your confidence at speaking in front of a range of audiences and to help you ensure you communicate clearly and effectively in a range of scenarios.

Read a newspaper every week. Sometimes, read two different newspapers and notice how they report the same news in different ways – pay attention to vocabulary choices and any images used – think about what they are trying to make the reader feel.

Take up opportunities to enter writing, reading and speaking competitions….or find ways to get your work published.

Find a magazine linked to something you are interested in and borrow it from the library or take out a subscription.
