Press release Into the future with a new fibre laser A new cutting system sets the pace in production at JACOB Porta Westfalica, 22/11/2019. Jacob Söhne GmbH & Co. KG has put a fibre laser system into operation. The specialist for modular pipe systems invested around 2.5 million euros into the new heart of their production facility. The laser has an output of six kilowatts and largely automates the production of components from steel sheets. Overall, by adding the new system the total capacity has increased by more than 30 percent. "With the new fibre laser system, we are increasing efficiency and laying the foundation for further growth," explains Eike Rodenberg, Project Manager in Production at JACOB. The new system replaces a carbon dioxide laser, which was used for cutting the sheets for nearly 20 years. The switch to fibre technology primarily results in a significantly higher cutting speed and improved cutting quality. But the entire process has also been optimised. The raw sheets are stored in a 14-metre high tower using a forklift truck. After that, everything is automated. The new software improves production planning and ensures superior operation of the entire system. According to the cutting plan, the system selects the correct raw sheet metal and manufactures the components. They can also be made available for further processing without any manual production steps. The sorting unit separates the cut parts automatically and stacks them directly onto a Euro pallet. "The high degree of automation not only makes production leaner, but also relieves our employees of the task of lifting heavy loads," says Rodenberg. Reconstruction during operation The impressive dimensions of the system made it necessary to carry out some building work beforehand. The height of the production hall was not sufficient to accommodate the tower. and the decision was made to raise the roof. Since cutting the sheets to size is a basic requirement for the entire production, the conversion of the building and the set-up of the system were accomplished during ongoing operation. "Reconstruction and installation were complex, but the organisational effort and the investment were worthwhile," says Rodenberg. "The new system is the basis for being able to supply our customers reliably and in proven JACOB quality in the future as well." 1
