Background (max. 100 words). This part should include a description of the target group of the initiative/project, an explanation of the needs which motivated the initiative/project and supporting evidence. Please focus on the lifelong learning approach of your initiative/project.

We have remodelled the well-known Tandem programme to fit the challenges of today’s world by building our own version of Tandem programme into the section’s Satellite4 website. This way the users can find a language learning partner on their own on the section’s website by setting which language they would like to learn. Previously we used to match the language learning partners manually, and the program was not effective at all. So having the system do it automatically saves us a lot of energy. It is easy to maintain, it doesn’t require intervention and the system gives information about new pairs. The Tandem Program is open for everyone, so it’s not just for the university students but also for elder people who want to learn new languages or just refresh their knowledge.

Conceptualisation and Design (max. 200 words). This section should explain the conceptualisation and design of the initiative/project, and it particular its methodology, financing, stakeholder involvement (why and how?).

We didn’t need any financial support from the stakeholders to make this project happen, but the IRO of the University support us by advertising the Tandem Program among the international and local students and they also offer plus points at the Erasmus+ application for those, who accomplish the program. As the Erasmus Student Network has the Satellite4 website and it is widely used, it was an excellent choice for the base of our renewed Tandem Project. Using the website gives us the benefits of the responsive web design. This means that the members can access the project anywhere with any device. Our Tandem Program consists of the following steps. First, the foreign students register on the Tandem registration surface of the website. Next, they create their personal profile. Then the system will enlist other users based on the languages they speak and the ones they wish to learn. They can send a request to the most likeable user who will be notified via email. The email contains the profile of the requesting member, by which the receiving user can decide whether he/she accepts the request. When a Tandem partner is accepted, both the partners and our section are notified via email. This email contains each partner’s name and email address by which they can contact each other and start the meetings. 10 meetings are required to accomplish the program. The partners will have to write a brief report about each meeting on a surface designed specifically for this purpose on our website. After 10 meetings the programme counts as accomplished, the partners get a certificate.

Impact and Achievements (max. 200 words). This section should describe the impact and achievements of the initiative/project with regard to the needs and context described above.

We had 60 registrations, half of which are Hungarian students, have registered for the programme since the middle of 2016 September, but as the system has been renewed in 2017 March, these registrations came mostly in the first semester. This is still an outstanding performance in comparison with Tandem programmes launched before. Running the programme through the website makes both the participants’ task and out work much easier. Since the middle of 2016 September 15 pairs have been formed, which is also a remarkable number. Now, we have a database of the Tandem partners and their meeting reports, so we can follow up their activities, development and needs. In the future, hopefully we can make the whole project bigger and better by using these collected data.

Evaluation and transferrable elements (max. 200 words). Please explain how you monitored and evaluated the impact of your initiative/project. Qualitative and quantitative data will be taken into account. Please explain what the transferrable (replicable) elements of your initiative/project are and how you (intend to) share the results. Please also explain the problems encountered, lessons learnt, and plans for the future.

At the moment the transfer does require some IT skill from the field of web development, but we hope that we will be able to create a drupal module from the whole system in the near future. This step will make the implementation of the Tandem registration really easy to everyone. We believe that creating such well-functioning system will benefit both the organisations and the students. Not to mention that we used to match the language learning partners manually, so having the system do it automatically saves us a lot of energy. It is easy to maintain, it doesn’t require intervention and the system gives information about new pairs. We have also made a short guide with program-and teaching ideas, which can help them to get the most of the Tandem Program.

In the last semester we realized how important is to advertise the program from the very beginning of the semester, when the Erasmus students arrive. As the renewing of the system kept longer than planned, we could launch the newest version of the project just in 2017 March. That’s why we had less foreign registration than in the first semester. In the future we will start the promotion earlier.

Please explain why you applied for the Lifelong Learning Platform’s LLLAwards (max. 100 words). How did you hear about the Awards? How do you intend to use the Award if you win?

We heard about this possibility through the Erasmus Student Network’s mailing list and we think, this would be a great possibility to show to everyone this amazing system we made. If we won, we would like to improve our official Tandem meetings with more various programs. For example we would like to buy board games to organize board games nights for our Tandem partners. These events would be opened for everyone, so this way we could engage more people.

I hereby certify that the information provided is accurate.

I am committed to providing the LLLPlatform Secretariat with extra documentation if necessary.
