INHALED STEROIDS Alvesco, Arnuity Ellipta, Asmanex, Budesonide, Flovent, Pulmicort, QVar How They Work: They are an anti-inflammatory topical steroid, similar to Flonase or cortisone cream, except inhaled onto the airways. When We Use Them: They are the gold-standard mainstay of the preventative treatment of asthma How To Use Them: Take every day exactly as directed Use a spacer with any metered dose inhaler Continue exactly as directed during an asthmatic flare Rinse your mouth or brush your teeth after Do not keep dry powder inhalers in a steamy bathroom Do not blow into a dry powder inhaler DO NOT Stop during an asthmatic flare, even if you are started on prednisone Possible Side Effects – not common: Hoarseness, thrush Additional Recommendations: Make sure your child is getting enough Calcium and Vitamin D
