ECDL MODULE 3Word Processing

Task 1

IMPORTANT – If you are sending this task to be marked via email you will need to provide screen captures where indicated with an asterisk (*) as evidence of work carried out. Instructions on how to produce a screen capture can be found on the IT Training & Support Intranet page.

Section 1

1. Open the Word Processing software by using the Start button on the bottom left of the screen, using the ‘All Programs’ option. Do NOT use any shortcuts on your desktop1. Close the Word document but NOT the application without saving any changes.

2. Create a new Blank document. Can you identify the different parts of the Word window on your screen:

3. Using the list below, enter the appropriate name next to each explanation:

Dialogue Box Launcher, Quick Access Toolbar, Status Bar, In-Ribbon Galleries, Ribbon, Title Bar

     Displays information such as the page, word count and line number at which the cursor is positioned in the document.

     

These are lists of commands/options that are presented graphically. The effect of the commands/options are illustrated instead of the commands themselves and they appear within the ribbon as opposed to a pop-up window.

      Opens dialog boxes containing features related to the group.

     Displays the name of the document that is open, which helps you distinguish one document from another when you are working with multiple documents.

      Can be customised to display frequently used commands.

      Previously known as Toolbars; they contain commands for carrying out related tasks within related groups.

5. Use the correct command to enable ‘Overwrite/Overtype’ mode in the Word Options*.

6. Pressing the Insert key on the keyboard will change to ‘Overwrite/Overtype’ mode. In this mode, the new text actually replaces the existing text as you type.

8. Change the settings in Word’s ‘Options’ so that the author/user name details of the document contains your name and initial*.

9. Before attempting this question, make a note of the default file location for saving documents on your computer.

Change the default file location of where a document is saved to the Desktop*.

Restore the default file location to its previous settings.

10. Text selection – insert the correct text for each command using the words listed below: a word a sentence a paragraph an entire document

11. Enter the text below in the new blank document (note: do not enter in bold)

Head Lice

The vast majority of cases of head lice are amongst the age group of 4-16 year olds. If a case of Head lice has been confirmed then the whole family should be treated. The method of removing lice by combing and use of conditioner is known as “bug busting”. It has not been scientifically tested, but success has been reported by families that follow the instructions carefully. Other methods include the use of essential oils (tea tree oil).

12. Save this document in the N:\ drive as info-yourname. (Example: WPT1-fredsmith) – close this document.

13. Open an existing document named Resource Review. Add a new paragraph, using the text below, after the paragraph ending with …and Assisting Visitors.

The assignment contained an introduction giving a scenario in relation to the tasks. There was differentiation with regard to the characters named in the scenario and there was no gender bias.

Make sure there is a clear line space after your new paragraph.

14. Ensure the document contains 4 paragraphs. Move paragraph 3 (starting with For each of the three…) so that it is now paragraph 4.

15. Change the top, left and right margins to 2.5 cm.

16. Change the orientation of the document to portrait and change paper size to A4.

17. Save the document as an .rtf file with the filename T1Resource Review-yourname and leave the document open on the screen.

18. Open another document named The New England Tour. The second sentence in paragraph 1 has been entered twice. Select and delete the repeated sentence.

19. Switch between the two windows so that the document named T1Resource Review-yourname is on your screen.

Open the Clipboard and using the task pane, copy the sentence If you wish... (last sentence in final paragraph) from this document and paste in the document named The New England Tour at the end of the first paragraph. (This document should already be open.)

20. Move the paragraph which starts The second assignment task… from the document named The New England Tour to the end of the document named T1Resource Review-yourname.

21. Save the document The New England Tour as a .txt file and also as a .pdf file and close.

22. Save the changes made to T1Resource Review-yourname and close.

23. You are not required to print and must evidence by using a screen capture*. Open the document named Venture and go to the Print Preview.Print 4 copies of page 2 only. Close the document.

24. Open the document named Venture2.

Find all instances of the word powys and replace with PowysFind all instances of the words Venture World and replace with Venture Activity World

25. When you carry out a find/replace command, the search and replace request will only be applied from the current position of the cursor down to the end of the document. Where would you go to ensure the entire document is searched?*

26. Which tab would you click to access the Spelling and Grammar checker?      

27. Type the correct colour in the sentences belowIncorrectly spelt words are indicated with a       wavy underline.A       wavy underline suggests grammatically incorrect words or phrases.

28. There are a number of errors in the document. Use the Spelling Checker to correct the grammatical and spelling errors within the document. Add the word Derriford to the custom dictionary.

29. Save the document as Venture2-yourname and close.

30. Create a new document based on the Faxes template. Select the option for the Fax cover sheet (Professional design)Save this document as a template with the filename Fax-yournameClose the document.

31. Use the Help function to find out the following information: what is the backstage view?*

32. When you have finished all the above, save this existing document (ECDL WP task 1) as WP Task 1-yourname. Exit the WP application.

1 Some Marjon computers do not have the Word software within the Microsoft Office folder and can only be accessed via a shortcut on the desktop. However for exam purposes you will need to know how to access/open a programme via the Start menu.
