BE A DESIGNER
Name Teacher Option
Context: Teenage Fashion
The Issue: Teenagers are always on the lookout for something original to wear that reflects their lifestyle and interests
Brief: Design a garment that reflects your lifestyle and interests as a teenager
Your Task
Identify a need or opportunity for a garment that you could design and make in class. Your garment must include at least three processes. Use a commercial pattern that is closest to your design.
Task 1: Planning
before you start, fill in the gantt chart by planning the time you are allowing for each stage of your work. Include resources and stakeholders you will need to see at each stage
as you complete each stage, fill in the actual time you spent on it, and write a reflection of how that stage went
investigate a New Zealand fashion designer
Task 2: Research
brainstorm your interests and list possible garments for each interest indicate your choice of garment, and say why you have chosen it identify a need or opportunity for your garment describe the attributes specific to the garment complete the product analysis worksheet collect pictures showing suitable garments that you could make. Comment on them collect samples of suitable fabric (including the name and fibre content of the fabric,
if possible) and say why they would be suitable for your garment complete the Fashion History research assignment
Task 3: Concepts
using the information gathered, draw at least six concept sketches for your garment, commenting on the suitability of each one
get one or two stakeholders to comment on your concepts, saying which would suit you best, and why
Task 4: Development1
choose the concept you like best and develop it further with at least four sketches, using colour
get one or two stakeholders to comment on your designs do working drawings of your final design, showing front and back views. Indicate
design details. draw a final design sketch in colour with accessories and a suitable background modify your initial attributes, now calling them specifications, and add new
specifications
Task 5: Brief and Specifications
select one of the needs and opportunities you identified in Task 2 and write a brief modify your initial attributes, now calling them specifications, and add new
specifications
Task 6: Making
using safe working practices, construct your garment, making sure the specifications of the brief are met
complete the ‘processes in making my design’ sheets
Task 7: Evaluation
evaluate your completed garment against the specifications of the brief, explaining if it was ‘fit for the purpose’ for which it was intended

h. How often is it worn?
i. What could you do with the garment when it is no longer wanted?
3. Look at the label to find answers to these questions:
a. Where was it manufactured?
b. What fibre/fabric is it made from?
c. Can it be washed? If so, what wash cycle should be used?

FABRIC RESEARCH
Why are these fabrics suitable for making my garment?
13
While you are sewing, you are to complete this research assignment. It can be done in class while you are waiting for a pattern and fabric, and for homework
FASHION HISTORY RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT
Research the development through history of a type of garment or popular brand, eg Levi Jeans, Nike Sportswear, swimwear, wedding dresses etc.
Make a time line of the development of the garment or brand through history to the present day. Use images to support your timeline

Imagine it is 2033 and you have been asked to design a modern version of the garment you have studied. Draw this design and label it.
- Indicate where your garment will be worn- Label design features – eg pocket for I-pod, fabric that acts as a keyboard,
changes temperature, etc- Indicate what colours you would use- Say how your design is fit for the intended purpose
Present this information in an innovative and original way, eg poster, leaflet, booklet
