It’s great to hear things coming together so beautifully in these last rehearsals. It’s totally normal to feel the little bubbles of excitement or anxiety around this time. We invite you to channel that energy into focusing on the “heart message” of the song and doing what you can to free yourself from the notes and words on the page. It
has been really gratifying to see how many of you have worked so hard, to now be able to connect with us as we direct, and to be fully present with the song.
Our heartfelt thanks to our singers, and to Denis and Siobhan, for making our first session as GHC co-directors such a joyful adventure!
Since most of our public concert ticket sales traditionally happen in the last week before the concerts any bit of extra push during this period can go a long way. With over 1500 people in our extended choir community a little bit of help from each of you can ensure sell-outs at both concerts. If you haven’t already done so please do any or all of the following that you find suitable: Check in with those you have spoken to before
about the concerts to see if they have purchased their tickets yet and if not offer to pick them up for them at choir.
Visit our Facebook Event Page and share it. Check our @GHCsings twitter account and re-tweet
at will Use any other social media you have access to
enthusiastically~ and ~
Check out our “Entering The Concert Home Stretch” document again to see if there is anything you haven’t done so far that you would be up to doing now.
Re-sending “Concert Info Announcement” (as a reminder) that was emailed to everyone on Jan. 11th if you kept it handy in your email IN folder or saved on your computer. If you don’t have a copy handy click here (how’s that for handy!)
As we have for past concerts we will be accepting donations toward a “Donated Ticket” fund.
For each set of our concerts this fund has provided tickets for people who would love to hear us in concert but can’t afford to buy a ticket themselves.
If you like the idea and wish donate the price of a ticket (or two or a few or even part of one) please see whoever is selling tickets during the break. Please make cheques payable to the Power of Hope.
If you know of someone needing a “donated ticket” to be able to come you can request it from the ticket sellers. They will be given out in the order requested as donations make them available.
Tickets will be available (no fees applied) at all choir rehearsals including the full choir rehearsal at the Alix Goolden Hall on Feb. 1st
They are $25 regular and $20 for seniors, students and the unwaged.
Please make it easy on the ticket sellers by working out in advance which concerts you want tickets for, how many of each type you need and their total cost. If you give them away as gifts and the recipients would like to change the concert night simply bring the tickets back and exchange them.
Please make cheques payable to the The Power Of Hope
They are also available from now to concert time at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, 900 Johnson… and…via the following links to their online system (either way fees are applied)… Feb. 2 Concert Feb. 3 Concert
And…through the usual ticket outlets (no fees applied) which are: Munro’s Books (Victoria), Ivy’s Books (Oak Bay), James Bay Coffee & Books (James Bay) & Dig This (Broadmead).
Members of our extended choir community are welcome to drop-in around the 8:30 break time any choir night to pick-up tickets for their family, friends and associates (no fees applied).
If you are a current member who… will not be singing in either concert and you want a comp ticket but can’t pick it up, or have it
picked up, at any of the remaining choir practices…Please Note: You can contact Jo Volek to make special arrangements is by emailing her at [email protected].

'Musical Memories' is a new project to bring music to people with dementia. Our goal is to use our love of music to bring joy to people whose loss of memory limits their access to happiness in their everyday lives. We are seeking volunteers with musical talent to sing or play for elders living in the secure areas of residential care facilities in Victoria. If you have a big heart and would like to know more, please contact me. Murray [email protected]

Share Space with The Power of Hope
Hey There! This is Sarah from Power of Hope Canada. We are looking for someone to share office space with. (We only use the space 2 days/week.)
Perhaps you know someone who could benefit.
As of January 15th the PoH office at Fort Tectoria (777 Fort St) will be available 3 days a week plus weekends and after hours.
The cost will be only 300/month. A steal of a deal for a downtown office. Lots of perks to being here! printer, kitchen, super fast wifi, meeting rooms, plus the coffee lounge on the main floor is awesome for meetings. If you know anyone interested you could pass along my email address: [email protected]
These two power-house performers, and former GHC Guest Artists, are teaming up for what (no doubt) be an incredible double bill concert on March 11th at 2 pm. It will be a sell-out so getting tickets early is advised. .Interested? Excited? If so…here’s the challenge…the concert will be in Nanaimo. No Victoria performance.
Car pool anyone? I’m carless but could share some of the driving and would happily help cover fuel costs. If we can organize something and want to sit together we should buy our tickets in a block as it is numbered seating. Contact me to discuss the art of the possible at the usual [email protected] or 250-920-4160.
I’ve been an Ann Fan since 1965 and a Rick Fan since 1972 so a concert featuring both of them has definitely grabbed my attention.
Ann will be supported by the musically brilliant: Ed Henderson (guitar), Finn Manniche (cello) and Miles Black (keyboards).
Rick will teamed with the amazing keyboardist Nico Rhodes as the very musical duo “Roots & Grooves.”
Is there a crystal & gemstone singing bowl in your future? Their pure, captivating tones are healing and transformative! I’ve imported over 100 bowls so that you can “try before you buy”. They call me the “bowl whisperer” because I am highly intuitive at connecting people with the perfect bowls for them. I announced this at choir practice tonight, and mistakenly identified the locale after shamelessly promoting the music, so please check the location below. I wouldn’t want you to turn up at the wrong place.
This original musical composition by Nicholas Fairbank (based on new Latin texts by Rev. Frances Dearman) had its world premier Nov. 26, 2017. I’ve had the privilege of hearing it performed twice and can’t wait to hear it again. It’s extraordinarily beautiful.

*WORDS AND PHRASES REMIND US OF THE WAY WE WORD*
by Richard LedererPublished January 3, 2015 in his Verbivore Blog
About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included "Don't touch that dial," "Carbon copy," "You sound like a broken record" and "Hung out to dry." A bevy of readers have asked me to shine light on more faded words and expressions, and I am happy to oblige:
Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie. We'd put on our best bib and tucker and straighten up and fly right. Hubba-hubba! We'd cut a rug in some juke joint and then go necking and petting and smooching and spooning and billing and cooing and pitching woo in hot rods and jalopies in some passion pit or lovers lane. Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! Holy moley! We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley, and even a regular guy couldn't accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China!
Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when's the last time anything was swell? Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys and the D.A.; of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal pushers. Oh, my aching back. Kilroy was here, but he isn't anymore.
Like Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle and Kurt Vonnegut's Billy Pilgrim, we have become unstuck in time. We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap, and before we can say, I'll be a monkey's uncle! or This is a fine kettle of fish! we discover that the words we grew up with, the words that seemed omnipresent as oxygen, have vanished with scarcely a notice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards.
Poof, poof, poof go the words of our youth, the words we've left behind. We blink, and they're gone, evanesced from the landscape and word scape of our perception, like Mickey Mouse wristwatches, hula hoops, skate keys, candy cigarettes, little wax bottles of colored sugar water and an organ grinders monkey. Where have all those phrases gone? Long time passing. Where have all those phrases gone? Long time ago: Pshaw. The milkman did it. Think about the starving Armenians. Bigger than a bread box. Banned in Boston. The very idea! It's your nickel. Don't forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Turn-of-the-century. Iron curtain. Domino theory. Fail safe, Civil defense. Fiddlesticks! You look like the wreck of the Hesperus.
Cooties. Going like sixty. I'll see you in the funny papers. Don't take any wooden nickels. Heavens to Murgatroyd! And awa-a-ay we go! Oh, my stars and garters! It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter had liver pills. This can be disturbing stuff, this winking out of the words of our youth, these words that lodge in our heart's deep core. But just as one never steps into the same river twice, one cannot step into the same language twice. Even as one enters, words are swept downstream into the past, forever making a different river.
We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeful times. For a child each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age. We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory. It's one of the greatest advantages of aging. We can have archaic and eat it, too.
See ya later, alligator!
