Baghdad was the capital of the Islamic world during the rule of the Abbasid Caliphate (750-1258). The city was wealthy and used its wealth to better the lives of those who lived there. As on account from the time states, “All the exquisite neighborhoods covered with parks, gardens, villas, and beautiful promenades are filled with bazaars and finely built mosques and baths that stretch for miles on both sides of the glittering river.”
Baghdad was also a center of learning. Scholars from throughout the Mediterranean world came to the House of Wisdom to study in the city’s libraries and universities. As a result of the coming together of great minds and a spirit of inquiry, scholars made great achievements in math, science, literature, art, and architecture. Trade brought ideas from throughout the world to Baghdad and scholars used those ideas to innovate.

The excerpt below was written by a Swedish explorer in the early 1900s, but his observations were as true when Mali ruled Timbuktu in the 14th century as they were hundreds of years later.
The remarkable features of Timbuktu are, then, its situation and its trade. We have only to take a look at the map to perceive that this town stands like a spider in its web. The web is composed of all the routes which start from
Image of the Sankore Mosque in Timbuktu taken in 1905, the center of the Sankoré Madrasah, or University of Sankoré, a center of learning in the Islamic world during the 14th century.

Caravans from the northern coast bring cloth, arms, powder, paper, tools, hardware, sugar, tea, coffee, tobacco, and a quantity of other articles to Timbuktu. But when they begin their journey through the Sahara, only half the camels are laden [loaded]. The other half are loaded with blocks of salt on the way, for salt is in great demand at Timbuktu…On the return journey northwards the
the Sankoré Masjid had been converted into a fully staffed Madrasa (Islamic school or in this case university) with the largest collections of books in Africa since the Library of Alexandria. The level of learning at Timbuktu's Sankoré University was superior to that of many other Islamic centers in the world. The Sankoré Masjid was capable of housing 25,000 students and had one of the largest libraries in the world with between 400,000 to 700,000 manuscripts.

Silicon Valley is an area outside of San Francisco, California that has been the center for computer and internet-based innovation since the late 1900s. It is the home of companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, Intel, Netflix, Hewlett Packard (HP), and many more.
Companies with new ideas and new products called “startups” come to Silicon Valley to find investors called venture capitalists to fund their ideas. Venture capitalists are wealthy individuals or investment groups that give money to new businesses with hopes that they will be a success and that the investors will get a share of the profits for giving money to the company before they were successful.
Silicon Valley is also home to several universities that have nurtured innovation in the technology fields and where many of the leaders in computer and internet business have studied including Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley.
