August 19, 2018

VU = Voices United Hymnbook (Red cover)MV = More Voices Hymnbook (Spiral Bound)

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY:“The devil, the originator of sorrowful anxieties and restless troubles, flees before the sound of music almost as much as

before the Word of God… Music is a gift and grace of God, not an invention of men. Thus it drives out the devil and makes

people cheerful. Then one forgets all wrath, impurity, and other devices.” ~ Martin Luther

PRELUDE:

WE APPROACH GOD

*♫OPENING HYMN: (VU 217) “All Creatures of Our God and King”

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CALL TO WORSHIP: We gather, as always, for prayer and praise! In the songs, in the stories, in the spaces—God finds us. Through our worship, we find ourselves— We gather God’s truth, and sing it to one another. Let us listen, let us speak, let us sing. God will accompany us!

INTROIT: “That I Would be Good” -Peggy Miller, Pat O’Kane

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy Spirit of God,Guard the music of our hearts, our minds, our souls, our selves.Forgive us when our song becomes guilty, selfish, angry, fearful or hateful.Instead, grant us a clean heart—that we might sing in harmony with your Spirit. May our music remind us of who we are, with whom we walk, and the holy place for which we are destined…

(A moment of silence for personal confession…)God has a song for you— a song which reminds you of home: of who you are, why you are here, and where you are going. A song that will both ground you, and grant you wings! Thanks be to God. Amen.  ♫SUNG RESPONSE: (VU 951)Holy, holy, holy, my heart, my heart adores you!My heart is glad to say the words: You are holy, God!Santo, santo, santo, Mi corazón te adora!Mi corazón te sabe decir; Santo eres Dios!

“SONGS OF THE HEART”Special Thanks this morning to Peggy Millar, Rick Calhoun, and Pat O’Kane for sharing their musical gifts, and for sharing songs that are so close to their hearts.

Today’s duet of Sting’s “Fragile” was performed at a 2018 “Rapport” concert here at Trinity.

For Peggy, Alanis Morissette’s “That I Would be Good” is a precious song “that is deep, validating, and continues to heal old scars… Every now and then a song becomes much more than a song.” In today’s service, it functions as our prelude, and as an invitation to worship and confession.

About closing with Garnet Rogers’ “Thanksgiving Eve,” Rick comments, “I have been a fan of Garnet Rogers for about 23 years now. ‘Thanksgiving Eve’ (written by Bob Frankie) is the final track on the first CD Garnet released after his brother Stan Rogers was killed in a plane fire in the early 1980s. To me, it is a song about hope, acceptance, and the sustaining power of love.”
