Hollingbourne Primary School Oak Class ENGLISH This term we will continue with our daily spelling focus looking at rules and strategies to help remember both words learnt so far as well as tacklingnew words. Grammar and punctuation will continue to be taught throughout our units of work to enable us to use correctly within our writing. We will continue to use quality texts within English; also incorporating short films to immerse the children in stories; enabling them to use their inference and deduction learnt throughout the year to understand different characters’ perspectives, feelings and viewpoints. As always, we will focus on writing for different purposes and audiences, giving the children the opportunity to draft and re-draft their work to help them improve their writing. MATHS There are 4 learning weeks until SATs for Year 6! Therefore we will be spending these weeks reviewing all the main learning objectives so as to ensure they have recapped all the key objectives and are able to perform their very best in May. Year 5s will follow the same revision pattern as Year 6, recapping all their key learning objectives so they are fully ready for the challenge of the Year 6 objectives as they arrive. We will be continuing also to complete Times Table Rockstars 3 times a week. Hopefully your children are still using this regularly at home as we know how important rapid times table recall is. SCIENCE Our topic this term is Living Things and Their Environment. We will be thinking about the classification of plants and the different groups they fall into. As we are so fortunate to have wonderful school grounds, and lots more around the school locality, we will, during our lessons be going outside and identifying plants in our local environment. Once we have gathered plenty of observation notes, photos and possible examples, we will create our own classification keys which we will then give to other groups within our class to test out. We will look at the scientist Carl Linnaeus who completed a lot of research and made several ground breaking changes in this area. The following video outlines some of his work:
