Paper Model: Sugar & Creamer Containers Objective You will create a paper model of a sugar and creamer set that includes surface decoration (drawn on design or sculpt*). Why? Not because I’m the teacher… creating models before the production of any piece allows you to test your creation quickly and cheaply before going into production. In our case, before you would create it out of clay. This gives you a chance to evaluate your design and test how everything fits together. You’re wondering what is a sugar and creamer set is? A sugar and creamer set is typically presented along side a tea set (teapot and cups) or given when you offer someone coffee who stopped by to visit you (side note – if you want someone who stopped by to visit to leave your house, offering them coffee is a polite way of saying the evening is over, lets wrap it up). Note from Douglass – I use the creamer container a lot more than I use a sugar container. I find the creamer container is a good size to put pancake syrup for one person. Unfortunately, a lot of my containers broke in my last few moves, so I was really looking forward to this project. Examples of sugar and Creamer containers

Paper Model: Sugar & Creamer Containers

ObjectiveYou will create a paper model of a sugar and creamer set that includes surface decoration (drawn on design or sculpt*).

Why?Not because I’m the teacher… creating models before the production of any piece allows you to test your creation quickly and cheaply before going into production. In our case, before you would create it out of clay. This gives you a chance to evaluate your design and test how everything fits together.

You’re wondering what is a sugar and creamer set is?A sugar and creamer set is typically presented along side a tea set (teapot and cups) or given when you offer someone coffee who stopped by to visit you (side note – if you want someone who stopped by to visit to leave your house, offering them coffee is a polite way of saying the evening is over, lets wrap it up).

Note from Douglass – I use the creamer container a lot more than I use a sugar container. I find the creamer container is a good size to put pancake syrup for one person. Unfortunately, a lot of my containers broke in my last few moves, so I was really looking forward to this project.

Tools:1. Scissors2. Glue or tape is ideal, but you can get around not having either3. Something to draw with or create a relief with (string, yarn, beads, etc.)

Steps:1. Watch video: Using Templates to Make a Cream & Sugar Set – Liz Zlot

Summerfielda. Watch at least the first 5 min. She will walk you through her process

for creating her template. By watching the entire video, you will see how everything comes together.

2. Create a template for a sugar and creamer container.3. Construct your sugar and creamer container out of paper / cardboard (such

as a cereal box).a. Use a sheet of paper like a slab of clay.

You will cut out your design and adhere the pieces together.

i. No glue or tape? You can design your piece to include tabs and slots.

4. Add a design to the outside of your containersRequirements of Paper Model…Size: Min. 3” tall, Max, 5” tallCreamer container: Needs a spout (handle is your choice). Needs to be 3-dimensional, not drawn on paper.Sugar container: Needs a lid (yes, your lid should come off). Needs to be 3-dimensional, not drawn on paper.Surface decoration: You can draw on a design, you can glue objects onto the paper, just try to do something you wouldn’t normally do

Rubric: out of 20 pointsConstruction of containers___ 2 pts original template design (one possible way to construct shown on the

next page, it is not the only way!!!)___ 2 pts Sugar container w/ lid

____ E. C.: 2 pts Lid w/ flange (fits on container and will not slide off)___ 2 pts drawn design around entire sugar container___ 1 pt. neat / carefully created design

____ E.C.: 1 pt. used other media beside drawing media (pencil, color pencil, etc.)

___ 2 pts Creamer container w/ spout___ 2 pts drawn design around entire creamer container

____ E.C.: 1 pt. used other media beside drawing media (pencil, color pencil, etc.)

Pictures and Reflection___ 2 pts – 2 pictures of sugar container (Lid on from front side and lid off from back side)___ 2 pts – 2 pictures of creamer container (front side and back side)

Page 3: ca01001129.schoolwires.net · Web viewA sugar and creamer set is typically presented along side a tea set (teapot and cups) or given when you offer someone coffee who stopped by to

___ 1 pt. – picture of sugar and creamer together___ 4 pts – Reflection – Explain how you created your containers (walk through the

steps you used). Explain your design, how you created it, and why you chose this design.

Here are some helpful images to get you started...Find material you are going to use to cut out your template for your sugar and creamer containers. You will need at least 2 sheets (one for the sugar container and one for the creamer container)

Draw the base. Use what you have around if you don’t have a ruler.

Draw sides. You can have anywhere from 2 to 8 sides.

Add tabs onto sides before cutting, it will be easier to glue or tape together. (If you need the no glue/tape option, check out the lid)

Fold all the sides and tabs and glue/tape tabs to sides. **If drawing your design, do that before you glue/tape together**

Draw shape for lid. Find something to measure with (I made a mark on the bag to keep the length the same). Add block letter T’s to side wall and cut out.

Fold sides and tabs. Place a small dot on either side of the trunk of the T (the vertical line) underneath the top of the T (the horizontal line)

Connect together the dots, and carefully cut the line. Fold the flaps on the T and carefully insert the tab into the slot.

Continue around the lid until you have all the side put together and you have a lid. You do not have to use this method for the lid. This method is only if you don’t

have access to glue or tape.

You will need to figure out the spout on your own!One or two more examples…

(If you use these templates without changing them it isn’t a original design) You would need to add

tabs

How to turn in assignment.Add images to a word or google doc. Save the file as Last Name First Name – April 13-17. **No Name = No Grade**

Page 5: ca01001129.schoolwires.net · Web viewA sugar and creamer set is typically presented along side a tea set (teapot and cups) or given when you offer someone coffee who stopped by to

You will need to include: 2 images of sugar container – one with the lid on showing front side and one

with the lid off showing back side of container 2 images of the creamer container – one of the front side and one of the

back side 1 image of both containers together Written reflection: Explain how you created your containers (walk through

the steps you used). Explain your design, how you created it, and why you chose this design.

Email file you your teacher. Subject should read: Last Name, First Name - April 13-17

Turning in your assignment to school? Please write your first and last name on bottom / underside of all pieces. Also, include your teacher’s name on each piece. Edwards and I will worry about getting your work and the rubric will be adjusted to account for no pictures. You will still need to include the reflection!!Page left blank in case you need paper at home - Douglass
