Respect, Resilience, Aspiration, Honesty, Enjoyment

Our vision statement and five core values are at the heart of our school. We truly believe that all children regardless of any disadvantage they may encounter will be inspired, believed in, challenged and as a result will achieve their full potential. We ensure this by having a broad and balanced curriculum that is knowledge-rich. Our curriculum will inspire children to be aspirational and it will promote engagement and enjoyment through the rich enrichment opportunities that go beyond the academic. At Edenthorpe Hall, we also ensure that children develop their character including respect, resilience and honesty so that they move to the next stage of their education as responsible citizens of the future who contribute positively to society.

Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy: Phonics Rationale

At Edenthorpe Hall we following the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics programme for Reception, Year 1 and those that need phonics in Year 2. RWI includes the teaching of synthetic phonics, sight vocabulary, decoding and encoding words as well as spelling and accurate letter formation. These skills are embedded through daily RWI lessons where children are grouped and taught by ability. By the spring term, all Year 1 children should be in a Set 3 group in order to have an awareness of all sounds.

We inspire, we believe, we challenge, we achieveHow we will achieve this: Implementation

RWI teachers have all of the RWI resources needed to teach RWI and they follow detailed lesson plans to maintain consistency of the teaching of phonics and reading across every RWI lesson, irrespective of the RWI reading teacher. RWI teachers will follow the guidance (using the handbook if needed) to revise/review, teach, practice and apply new sounds. Speed sound lesson to last no longer than 10 minutes followed by reading. (Set2/3 plan appendix 5)

How is Phonics taught at Edenthorpe Hall?

Lesson Set 1Children to have the letter written in their book as a guide to support the formation. This can be done in highlighter for the children to go over. (See appendix 1)

Say the sounds Read the sound Review the sounds Write the letter Speed write – 2 or 3 sounds Fred talk (oral) – when learned enough sounds to make words. (Sh-i-p ship)

Word time 1.1 - when children have learned the first set of sounds – m, a, s, d, t 1.2 – m,a,s,d,t,i,n,g,o 1.3 - m,a,s,d,t,i,n,g,o,c,k,u,b 1.4 - m,a,s,d,t,i,n,g,o,c,k,u,b,f,e,l,h,sh 1,5 - m,a,s,d,t,i,n,g,o,c,k,u,b,f,e,l,h,sh,ck,r,j,v,y,w 1.6 - m,a,s,d,t,i,n,g,o,c,k,u,b,f,e,l,h,sh,ck,r,j,v,y,w,th,z,ch,qu,x,ng,nk 1.7 – double consonants ff,ll,ss

Set 2/3 – Children to write 3 words in a list (down the left hand side of the page next to the margin) followed by a sentence (not to repeat a word from the list). The sentence should also include a red/tricky word. Children do not need the sound written for them.

Phonics work to be recorded in phonics/spelling books using the correct handwriting lines. When children do not form letters correctly, this should be modelled in blue pen and children should be given time to practice this.

Children that are in grey group may need additional resources/activities such as phoneme spotters, bingo or spelling tasks as these children are aware of all the sounds. They will need quick recaps less frequently than the rest of the groups.

Teachers to use the phrases (ay – may I play – appendix 2) to support children in reading and writing. Use the large chart to point out similar sounds (See appendix 3). Remember the sounds that are not covered by RWI but children need to know. (See appendix 4)

Say the sound Read the sound Review the sounds Read the words Review old words – without sound buttons (quick flash) Nonsense words Spell with Fred Fingers Write words

Reading

Reading will last 20 minutes and follow the RWI lesson plan. Using green/red words at the start of the week to introduce key vocabulary (interactive whiteboard/oxford owl can be used). In spring term, Year 1 will have a comprehension lesson at the end of the week using the questions in their coloured RWI reading book. These questions to be photocopied and stuck in their guided reading book. (See appendix for 6 levelled books)

Assessment

Children will be assessed and regrouped half termly. Children will read sounds from the set that is appropriate. They will read real and nonsense words, showing their blending skills. Higher level children will read a text to show their fluency. They will then be grouped (see appendix 7)
