THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, God or our ancestors; to you be praise and glory for ever. You called the matriarchs and patriarchs to live by the light of faith and to journey in the hope of your promised fulfillment. May we be obedient to your call, and be ready and watchful to receive your Christ, a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for you are our light and our salvation.Blessed be God for ever.

People of God, awake! The day is coming soon when you shall see God face to face. Remember the ways and the works of God. God calls you out of darkness to walk in the light of his coming. You are God’s children, and God’s promise is true!Lord, make us one as we walk with Christ today and for ever. Amen.

CONFESSION

Most Holy God, in the midst of this Advent season, we confess:

We have resisted the light of your love;we have not fully shared the gifts entrusted to us; andwe have not treasured the gifts of others around us.

We stand in need of your love.

Holy Father, make us holy.Holy Jesus, make us holy.Holy Spirit, make us holy.Holy God, make us whole. Amen.

God, our healer, whose mercy is like a refining fire: Touch us with your judgment and confront us with your tenderness; that, being comforted by you, we may reach out to a troubled world; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall 2

FIRST READING........................................................................Isaiah 64:1-9

The prophet praises God’s power, who had restored the Jewish people back to their homeland after half a century in Babylonian exile. The prophet then confesses the sin of his people and recommits them to live into their calling as God’s holy people.

A reading from Isaiah.

If only you would tear open the heavens and come down! Mountains would quake before you like fire igniting brushwood or making water boil. If you would make your Name known to your enemies, the nations would tremble in your presence. When you accomplished wonders beyond all our expectations; when you came down, mountains quaked before you.

From ancient times, no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any god but you who acts on behalf of those who wait for you. You look after those who gladly do right; they will praise you for your ways.

But you were angry when we sinned; you hid yourself when we did wrong. We have all become like the unclean; all our righteous deeds are like a menstrual rag. All of us wither like a leaf; our sins, like the wind, carry us away. No one calls on your name; no one bothers to hold on to you, for you have hidden yourself from us, and have handed us over to our sin.

But now, LORD, you are our father. We are the clay, and you are our potter. All of us are the work of your hand. Don’t rage so fiercely, LORD; don’t hold our sins against us forever, but gaze now on all of us, your people.

SECOND READING........................................................1 Corinthians 1:3-94

At the beginning of his letter to the Corinthian church, the Apostle Paul assures his readers that God has not withheld anything from them that is beneficial for their spiritual growth into God’s holiness. While they wait for Christ’s return, they are to remain faithful in bearing witness to Jesus as Lord of all and thereby bring to fruition their spiritual maturity.

A reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian Church.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God always for you, because of God’s grace that was given to you in Christ Jesus. That is, you were made rich through him in everything: in all your communication and every kind of knowledge, in the same way that the testimony about Christ was confirmed with you.

The result is that you aren’t missing any spiritual gift while you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also confirm your testimony about Christ until the end so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who called you in partnership with God’s Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

“But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.

“Therefore, keep awake – for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake!”

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him 6

all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.  On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. For the Universal Church: We pray for Michael, our Presiding Bishop, for Bob our own Bishop, for Kahu Kawika and all other ministers, and for all the holy people of God. We pray for this congregation – those present, online, and absent – that you would strengthen us all to be ambassadors of your love, grace, and acceptance. We beseech you, our God.

Come, O long-expected Jesus.

For the Nation and All in Authority: Heal the divisions present in our society and world, especially in the aftermath of our General Election. We pray for

those in positions of public trust, that they may deal justly and promote the dignity and freedom of every person. We beseech you, our God.

For the Welfare of the World: The heavens and all creation declare your salvation on this, our island home. Help us to take good care of this world that you have entrusted to us. May we care for your other creatures, and make use of this world’s resources for your glory and for the blessing of all. We beseech you, our God.

For the Concerns of Our Community: May there be a growing spirit of respect and forbearance among people of all backgrounds. As we consider that one day your Son will return to restore all justice and righteousness on the earth, help us to live as worthy reflections of your grace and love. We beseech you, our God.

All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things.

You sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing.

Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing. All you create is a sign of hope for our journey. And so, as the morning stars sing your praises, we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy:

Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all. Your Word has never been silent;you called a people to yourself as a light to the nations, and you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise.

Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign, and to give himself for us as a fragrant offering.

Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin,brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us.

We thank you that on the night before he died for us, Jesus took bread;and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory,and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ:

Dying, you destroyed our death.Rising, you restored our life.Christ Jesus, come in glory!

Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love.

Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, Queen Lili‘uokalani and all saints, into the joy of our true eternal home.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you, our God and Creator, in voices of unending praise. Amen.

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast.

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
