In pursuit of excellence, the Kosovo Leadership Academy has established standards for students and parents which are discussed in this Handbook. Students, parents, faculty and staff should know this Handbook and work together to achieve these standards.

The Kosovo Leadership Academy is developing young leaders to make a strategic difference. It seeks to graduate students who have a clear commitment to their communities while encouraging students to maximize their potential and press toward the goal for the sake of something larger than themselves. The KLA is about learning with excellence, living with excellence, and leading with excellence.

Learn with Excellence

The what of education at the Kosovo Leadership Academy combines Kosovo’s core competencies with 21st century skills and curriculum. The how of education at the Kosovo Leadership Academy is T.E.A.M.S., a problem-based, rigorous learning approach. T.E.A.M.S. stands for the interdisciplinary instruction of technology, engineering, art (communication, visual, and performing), math, and science. The key elements are:

1. Problem-based learning : Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge to meet. While the problem provides interdisciplinary instruction, it also requires students to set goals, make choices and take ownership of their learning.

2. Rigorous Learning : The expectations are high. The work is hard. The curriculum is rigorous. The staff-created curriculum connects the real world to the classroom. Students are required to explain, predict, analyze, interpret, reason, evaluate, and create as they strive to answer the open-ended driving questions.

3. School Community and Belonging : KLA culture is critical. Students and staff trust and respect each other as they connect and collaborate to accomplish team tasks.

4. Career, Technology, and Life Skill : Students use the skills of communication, creativity, collaboration, leadership, critical thinking, and technological proficiency.

5. Personalized Learning : Teachers differentiate instruction based on learning needs. They do not simply teach students, they mentor students, equipping them to become active leaders.

6. External Community : Students participate in community service and volunteer activities. These activities may include, but are not limited to picking up trash, assisting in the special needs school, organizing a community activity, working in the school library, teaching English after school, etc.

7. Staff Collaboration : Staff work together to develop ideas and curriculum. They consistently evaluate their work and search for ways to improve instruction. The school leadership facilitates staff growth and development.

Identify the problem. Clarify the problem. Apply information gathered through research to

formulate a hypothesis. Analyze the research by drawing connections among

ideas to examine a hypothesis. Evaluate findings to support or disprove a hypothesis. Implement an action plan that clearly demonstrates

breadth and depth of thinking in arriving at a solution.

Creative Problem Solving

Define the problem. Examine the problem from different perspectives. Explain the ideas or concepts presented to demonstrate

a clear comprehension of the issues. Brainstorm and generate creative challenges in

thinking through the problem. Verify the competency of the solutions derived from

the challenges. Create an original product (project, paper, multimedia

presentation) that demonstrates flexibility of thinking in the presentation of the final solution.

Effective Communication

Fluently read and comprehend complex text. Thoroughly research, reflect, write, and revise

informational and persuasive text. Attentively listen and integrate information presented

in diverse formats and media. Speak confidently in a variety of contexts

demonstrating proficient command of formal language when necessary.

Strategically adapt digital media to enhance oral, written, and visual communication skills.

OriginalResearch

during assessment. Term papers, book reports, and projects are created

from authentic research. Research findings are given proper citation and not

plagiarized.Time Management All assignments are turned in on or before the due date.

To use time wisely and provide highly interactive collaborating classrooms, the KLA participates in the ‘Flipped Classroom’ learning model. Students will listen and take notes on short lessons prepared and presented by teachers outside the classroom. When the students enter the classroom, they are prepared to participate in discussions, problem-solving, projects, and competitions.

Honor Code

5

Page 6: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Each Kosovo Leadership Academy student must value others and live as a responsible individual – one whose word is his/her bond, whose work is always his/her own, and around whom the property of others is safe. The Honor Code governs Kosovo Leadership Academy students at all times and in all places. Each student must sign the Honor Code, accepting his/her personal responsibility. Parents will sign the Honor Code signifying their responsibility to the Honor Code and to hold their child accountable.

No Lying: All students are to tell the truth and not to mislead others. o Deliberate verbal or written falsification is lying.o Deliberately allowing a false assumption to be drawn is lying.

No Cheating: All students will ensure that the work they submit is their own and that they will neither give nor receive unauthorized assistance in academic work.

No Stealing: All students will respect school property and the property of others and will ensure that it remains safe for their use. No student has the right to take or use anything without permission.

No Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a form of lying, cheating, and stealing. Students must give credit on all writing assignments for work that is not their own.

No Information Technology Misuse: Students must not lie, cheat, or steal using I.T. resources. Specifically, this includes but is not limited to the fact that students may not electronically misrepresent who they are, send emails that conceal their identity, or use passwords, files or documents from other students without their permission. Any other violation of the Technology Responsible Use policy is a violation of the Honor Code.

Students are expected to do all in their power to support the community of trust embodied in the Honor Code and should not condone violations of the Honor Code by others.

If a student is convicted of an honor violation, his or her parents will be notified of the incident, and the student will receive penalties (detentions, suspension) depending on the individual case. In addition, the student will be placed on Warned Status for a specified period. A second honor violation within the Warned Status period will result in a serious penalty. The Kosovo Leadership Academy believes that every student may learn from his or her mistakes and deserves a second chance to apply the values of personal honor in our community.

Honor Pledge

6

Page 7: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

“I, [student’s and parent’s name], have read and understand the standards of conduct required by the Kosovo Leadership Academy in the Honor Code. I pledge my best efforts to conform to these standards or willingly face the consequences for their violation as deemed appropriate by the School administrators.”

Student Leadership

Formal positions of student leadership at the KLA are comprised of the student government and KLA Ambassadors. The primary purpose of each position is to pursue and carry out the mission of the KLA and to encourage and model the same in the student body. Student leadership, which is central to our mission, is considered extracurricular.

Student Government

The Kosovo Leadership Academy Student Government exists to provide students with additional opportunities to learn organization and leadership skills while serving the student body and modeling excellent character. The Student Government is tasked with providing a platform by which the concerns of students can be presented before the faculty and staff. The Student Government also represents the student body before the community, plans and participates in service projects for the betterment of the school and starts traditions that build school spirit and encourage excellent character.

The Student Government is composed of two representatives, a president and a secretary, from each class above the 6th grade who serve a single academic year term. The Student Government is advised by two members of the KLA faculty. The 6th grade class is also permitted to elect a single representative to the council. All representatives will be elected by a more than 50% vote from their grade level peers. Any student may run or be nominated for a position on the student government. However, the faculty advisers of the Student Council reserve the right to reject a student's nomination if a student is failing classes or has shown consistent poor character. The advisers also reserve the right to remove members of the Student Government for repeated breaches of the honor code, for repeated disruption of meetings or student council business or if the student's grades fall low in multiple classes. No student's nomination will be rejected nor will a Student Government member be removed from his or her position without the corroboration of the school administrators of the KLA.

A Student Body President will be elected at the end of each academic year to serve as the chief representative of the KLA students. The Student Body President will serve for one year on the School Council and, when called upon, will represent the KLA student body in an official capacity before the faculty, staff, parents and community. The Student Body President attends and guides Student Government meetings and works closely with the advisers in planning events, activities and service projects. The

Student Body President is chosen from the oldest classes of the Kosovo Leadership Academy by a majority vote by the entire student body.

KLA Ambassadors

The specific responsibility of the KLA Ambassadors is to welcome visitors to the school. KLA Ambassadors shall work closely with the Administration to ensure that visitors feel welcome. They will arrive early on the days that visitors are coming, be in perfect uniform, and ready to assist wherever needed at KLA evening functions.

Process for Selecting KLA Ambassadors

At the beginning of each school year, one male and one female student will bechosen to be KLA Ambassadors for the academic year. The students who are interested in the position must submit a one-page typed statement explaining why they feel they are qualified for the position and how they will help the Administration welcome and value guests. To be considered for the office a student must be of high moral character with a passion for the mission of the Kosovo Leadership Academy. Ambassadors will be removed from their responsibilities if their integrity is undermined by their conduct or if they are placed on Academic Probation. Ambassadors must be in good financial standing with the school by the end of each trimester.

The School Council

The role of the School Council is to uphold the KLA standards, review alleged violations of expected standards of conduct, and make disciplinary recommendations to the School administrators. The School Council will consist of KLA staff members and the student government president. The student in question will have the opportunity to clarify information or explain mitigating circumstances to the School Council. Proceedings of the School Council are confidential. The school administrators will meet with parents and student together to discuss the School Council’s findings and recommendations for disciplinary action. The School administrators has the authority to supersede the recommendations of the School Council and in some cases, may act without convening the School Council.

The KLA Uniform

KLA encourages a lifestyle of integrity, diligence, and graciousness of both faculty and students. Uniform regulations promote these goals by encouraging individual expression based on character, personality and special talent rather than on the style and expense of the latest fads and fashions. The KLA uniform is required for all school functions and trips unless explicitly stated otherwise.

If a student’s attire is deemed inappropriate by the Administration, the student will be sent to the office and a parent will be called. The student will not be allowed to enter a classroom until he/she is wearing the appropriate uniform. If a student is late to class, it is recorded and treated as an unexcused tardy. Any class a student misses is unexcused.

Attendance: Policies and Guidelines

9

Page 10: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

The Kosovo Leadership Academy is committed to modeling and forming habits of the heart and mind that fulfill its mission in the lives of its students, their families, the faculty and staff. To succeed academically students, faculty, and staff must always be present and engaged. Of course, circumstances occasionally intervene—illness, emergencies, academic and cultural opportunities. But consistent, faithful attendance is necessary to receive the full benefits of a KLA education.

Class Attendance

Students are required to attend class. They are not given the option to skip a class for any reason, including working on academic material for another class, unless specific permission is given by the teacher of the class being missed. Skipping class will result in disciplinary action. Repeated offenses will be submitted to the School Council.

When students miss class for any reason, it is their responsibility to get their assignments through ThinkWave, EdPuzzle, and other school media. If the assignments are not available via school media, students are responsible to obtain assignments as soon as they return to classes.

A student who fails to attend at least two classes in a day is not permitted to participate in afternoon school activities (including athletic practices and games as well as drama rehearsals and performances) and may not participate in any school-sponsored activity that same day, unless considered as a pre-arranged absence as approved by the School administrators.

Tardies

Punctuality is excellence. Students will arrive on time ready to learn. School begins with Rally Point at 8:15 a.m. This means students are in their seats waiting to start by 8:15 a.m. Those who arrive after 8:15 a.m. must sign in at the office, receive a late pass, and report directly to their class. They will receive a tardy. After three tardies in a two-week period, students will be required to attend a week of Guided Study Time at 7:15 a.m.

Absence Notification Policy

When a student cannot attend school, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the KLA Office Receptionist ([email protected], 049-552-987) between 8 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. If the school office does not receive a call, one attempt will be made to contact a parent for confirmation of the absence. Students who know of an upcoming absence are responsible for making arrangements with each of their teachers in advance.

Excessive Absences

10

Page 11: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Any student who misses 10 or more classes in one subject for any reason will lose credit for the course. Students who believe extenuating circumstances justify the absences may appeal to the School administrators. Excessive absence from class results in lower class averages.

Excused Absences

Absences are excused in cases of illness, death of immediate family members, special circumstances, and medical appointments. If possible, medical appointments should be scheduled after school.

Absences Due to Illness

When a student is sick and cannot attend school, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the KLA office as soon as possible. If no contact is received from the parent, the absence is recorded as unexcused. A note from a parent or doctor must be presented to the school office to be readmitted to class. If it is discovered that the student who is absent because of illness has engaged in an activity, even with parental permission, the student’s absence will be unexcused and reported to the administration and School Council.

Extended Absences

Students who have been absent for longer than three days and have missed assignments during their absence are responsible to meet with their teachers the day of their return. Each teacher will meet individually with the student to determine when the class assignments are to be completed.

Preplanned Absences

Students who plan to be absent from school for reasons other than illness or for school related absences are expected to meet beforehand with each teacher to schedule times for completing assignments. Multiple absencesrequire a Preplanned Absence Form be completed and signed by a parent or guardian and given to the School administrators no later than 9:00 a.m. on the day before the absence.

Preplanned Absence Forms should be completed by teachers and signed by a parent or guardian. The student shall then take the form to the School administrators for approval. A copy of the completed form will be returned so that the student can refer to it to complete the assigned work. The Preplanned Absence Form is available on ThinkWave and at the office.

Unexcused Absences

11

Page 12: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Any absence which does not automatically qualify as an excused absence, which was not correctly reported by the parent or guardian to the school office, and which is neither permitted by the teacher nor excused by the School administrators is considered an unexcused absence. Students will receive zeros on any tests, quizzes, papers, or other work missed due to the unexcused absence. Unexcused absences will be reported to the administration and the School Council.

Sign-Outs

When a student must leave before the end of the school day, s/he must provide a written note signed by a parent stating a specific reason for the early dismissal. Please try to schedule medical and dental appointments after school hours. Before leaving school, the student must sign out at the Office. Students who leave campus without signing out may be subject to disciplinary action. No one is authorized to give any student permission to leave campus without specific authorization from the School administrators.

Make-up Work

In the case of a short absence from school (a day or two), students are expected to make up their work promptly upon their return to school. A one-day absence the day before or on a scheduled test does not exempt the student from the test. In the case of longer absences for more serious illnesses, the KLA allows proportionally longer time for making up a test. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange a schedule with the teacher for any make-up work, including tests.

A student who comes to school after the class in which a test was given is required to take the test on that day and will be referred to the School Council if this is a behavior pattern.

Students who have been absent for longer than three days and have missed assignments during their absence must schedule time with their teachers the day of their return to complete the assignments. Students must meet with each teacher individually to determine when the class assignments are to be completed.

Discipline: Policies and Guidelines

12

Page 13: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Behavior Expectations

Behavior expectations are clearly set in the Live with Excellence Discipline Strategy. Teachers and administrators at KLA are committed to their students’ character development and their academic competencies. They view themselves as mentors, not police or best friends. When students make decisions that (1) interfere with their own and others’ learning process, (2) cause physical or emotional harm, and/or (3) willfully disrespect established policies and guidelines, they will be held accountable for such decisions and appropriate consequences will be assigned.

Each student is expected to behave in a manner that exemplifies integrity, graciousness, and diligence. Students will be held responsible for behavior that violates these principles. Proper behavior is expected at all school-sponsored activities both during and after regular school hours. Students who consistently or repeatedly fail to uphold the standards of conduct and behavior expected by the KLA may be a subject of termination based on the decision of the School Council. The School reserves the right to request the withdrawal of any student who does not meet academic requirements or of a student or family who fails to actively support its rules and regulations. This requirement is submitted by school administrators.

Parents and students are expected to support and uphold school standards of conduct and discipline. Without this cooperation and support, a double standard exists between the home and school that is detrimental to the student’s development and the Kosovo Leadership Academy community.

Classroom Behavior

Upon entering the classroom, students are responsible to get to work in an orderly quiet manner. The classroom atmosphere is one of graciousness and professionalism, where critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication occur continuously and feedback fosters a growth mindset. Minor classroom disturbances or infractions are handled by the classroom teacher with the ‘Live It Daily Record’. When students need more than simple re-direction to the tasks at hand, the teacher may remove them from the classroom and send them directly to the school administrators.

Realistic behavioral limits are set for the good of the students and are carefully explained and enforced. Discipline is necessary when behavior violates one or more of the following general guidelines:

1. Any action that interferes with the learning process2. Any action that causes physical and emotional harm3. Any action that violates a school rule4. Any act that willfully disrespects an individual, group, or property

13

Page 14: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Prior to the school year, every student, and at least one parent, must sign a statement indicating their understanding of the KLA Standards of Conduct and their willingness to conform to these standards or face appropriate disciplinary action.

KLA Standards of Conduct

1. Students shall conduct themselves in a gracious and orderly manner. 2. Students shall be respectful of school personnel, teachers, students, and guests.

They will not talk back or argue with faculty members in a disrespectful manner.

3. Students shall endeavor to keep the campus clean. They will take pride in their school and community by properly disposing of litter and recycling.

4. Students shall attend class with appropriate books, devices, and supplies.5. Students shall communicate in the mother-tongue of the teacher responsible

for the class. Students shall speak Albanian in a class with an Albanian teacher. Students shall speak English in a class with an English speaking teacher.

restitution for any damaged or defaced property. Actual replacement or repair costs will be assessed by the administration.

8. Students shall not use profanity or hurtful and demeaning language to others. 9. Students shall not bring to school or to a school activity nor shall they have in

their possession articles such as pornography, alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. Zero Tolerance!

10. No weapons, including knives, guns, lighters, or explosives may be brought onto the campus or to any school function, either on campus or off. Using any object in a threatening manner as a weapon will also be held to be a violation of the KLA weapons policy. Furthermore, the School forbids having facsimile weapons at school, such as toy guns or plastic swords or knives. Zero Tolerance!

11. Students shall not engage in public displays of affection, such as holding hands, hugging, or kissing, at school or school functions outside of the cultural norm.

12. Students shall notify designated school personnel and teachers of classes being missed before leaving the campus during school hours.

Academic Pledge

All papers, tests, and exams must have written and signed on the cover page the following Academic Pledge. Violations of the Pledge will be considered a major offense and submitted to the School Council for review.

14

Page 15: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

“This work is my own intellectual work and no unauthorized help has been given or received.”

Minor Conduct Offenses

Failure in behavior will result in consequences. Minor conduct offenses are typically handled by the teacher or staff member who is immediately involved with the student(s). Students are expected to respectfully obey and submit to the authority placed over them in the school community. Minor conduct offenses will follow the “Live with Excellence Daily Record” policy. Detentions will be held during lunch hours and Saturday school.

Major Conduct Offenses

The following behaviors are considered major KLA conduct offenses and could result in the suspension or expulsion of the student as deemed appropriate by theSchool Council and/or School administrators.

1. Fighting or bullying, including at athletic activities 2. Plagiarism, cheating, lying, stealing or other violation of the Honor Code3. Verbal abuse, profanity 4. Leaving the campus without permission during school hours 5. Possession of inappropriate articles on campus (i.e., weapons, pornography,

alcohol, drugs, tobacco) 6. Use of illegal substance (i.e., alcohol, drugs, or tobacco) 7. Vandalism 8. Reckless or intentional action that may result in physical injury, his/her

property or the property of the school9. Engaging in, or enticing others to engage in, sexual activity 10. Repeated minor offences (e.g. uniform violations) 11. Any violation of the Technology Responsible Use policy

Consequences of Major Conduct Offenses

Major conduct offenses will require a meeting between the parents, student, and the School administrators. Only the school administrators have decision-making authority regarding suspension/expulsion, although the School Council may forward the results of their review and a recommendation to the school administrators.

Vandalism

A student, who willfully damages school property shall be properly disciplined and his/her parents, shall be requested in writing to restore or to replace each damaged or

15

Page 16: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

destroyed property in accordance with the true value as determined by the school administrators. In extreme cases of vandalism a student shall be subject to suspension or dismissal from school under the charge of serious misconduct.

Disciplinary Probation

A student is placed on disciplinary probation for a serious breach of discipline or for persistent minor breaches. A student on disciplinary probation may be denied the right to participate in after-school activities or sports or to hold any office in the KLA. Disciplinary probation is to be interpreted as a warning that any further breach of discipline is reason for suspension or expulsion.

Suspension

A suspended student will be removed from the school community for a designated period, from one to five days. A suspended student will come to school, but will not attend classes. S/he may not attend or participate in any school-related function during the period of suspension. The student must complete and turn in all classroom assignments missed. The highest grade for all completed assignments is 75. The suspension may be noted on the official student record. Only the school administrators have the authority to suspend a student.

Expulsion

The decision to expel a student rests with the school administrators. Forgiveness and restitution are fundamental to a discipline policy, yet do not necessarily mitigate against the consequences of certain actions that violate the purpose and integrity of the KLA community.

Sexual or Racial Harassment Policy

The Kosovo Leadership Academy admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally made available to all students at the school. KLA does not discriminate based on race, color, national, and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational and admissions policies and other administered programs. The school does seek to maintain a balance between male and female students.

The Kosovo Leadership Academy prepares young men and women for leadership roles both in their communities and in the world. It desires to establish an environment of mutual edification, trust and respect between members of the faculty, parents, administration, student body, and guests. It desires to establish an environment of mutual edification, trust and respect between men and women. In furtherance of this end, it is the policy of KLA not to condone, allow, or disregard

16

Page 17: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

incidents of sexual or racial harassment, or to permit or condone unlawful discriminatory conduct.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is defined as any conduct, act or comment carrying an inappropriate sexual innuendo. Such conduct is inappropriate where it has the purpose or effect of interfering with or infringing upon an individual’s work, study, or scholastic activities, or upon extracurricular activities related to KLA. Members of the opposite (or same) sex will be treated with due respect and sexually oriented activities, jokes, references, remarks, matters of dress, behavior, or personal appearance will be avoided. No such conduct, regardless of its manner or form, will be tolerated. Zero Tolerance!

Discrimination

Neither will the KLA tolerate discriminatory conduct on any other inappropriate or unlawful basis, including race, age, national origin, religion, disability, sex, or any other legally prohibited basis.

Racial Harassment

Racial Harassment is defined as any conduct, act or comment carrying an inappropriate racial innuendo. Such conduct may be intended to intimidate, manipulate, take advantage of, or demean persons who belong to a particular race. This includes verbal and non-verbal behavior, including (but not limited to) racial slurs, demeaning remarks and jokes, impeding or interfering with the actions of another, or creating or displaying racially derogatory posters, cartoons, or drawings. All such conduct is prohibited.

Procedure

If any member of the faculty, student body, parents, or administration of KLA becomes aware of any act of sexual or racial harassment or any inappropriate harassing or discriminatory conduct involving any member of the KLA community, s/he should report this incident to the school administratorsas soon as possible. All reported or suspected occurrences of harassment will be promptly and thoroughly investigated in as confidential a manner as possible. If it is determined that such conduct has occurred, the school administration will take immediate and appropriate action related to the behavior which has taken place, which may include suspension or termination and, where appropriate, reporting the same to the appropriate outside authorities. If a student reports inappropriate contact by a teacher, the school administrators will investigate the complaint in a manner that is intended to protect the confidentiality and privacy of all parties as fully as possible, and any improper conduct will be dealt with both swiftly and appropriately.

Drug Policy

It is the policy of the School to maintain a safe and drug free environment for all students. The presence of drugs as defined below in the school setting, and the influence of these substances on students during school hours or at school-related functions, are contrary to good health, effective learning, school policy, and Kosovo law. Students who possess, use, or are under the influence of drugs while enrolled as a student at the Kosovo Leadership Academy are in violation of the Drug Policy and are subject to disciplinary action.

Drugs include all substances which have mind- or function-altering effects upon the human body or that impair one’s ability to learn or conduct him- or herself appropriately. These substances include, but are not limited to, all prescription and over-the-counter medications, all psychoactive substances, all controlled substances, all inhalants, steroids, all “synthetic” or “designer” drugs, all “look alike” drugs, alcohol, and all substances illegal under federal law. Alcohol also falls under the guidelines of the Drug Policy. The distribution, manufacture, possession, sale or use of above substances by students is not condoned, excused or permitted by the Kosovo Leadership Academy.

If the school administrators suspect drug use by a student, s/he may ask the student to get a drug test. The student’s parents will be required to sign an informed consent statement acknowledging that they understand the student is being tested for drug use. Refusal to be tested or to give informed consent indicates an unwillingness to abide by school policy, which is cause for disciplinary action. Such actions may result in dismissal.

Prescription Medications

Prescription medications, when taken as directed by the student’s physician, are not included within the definition above of the term “drugs.” Prescription medication to be administered during the school day must be submitted to and dispensed by the school nurse or the administration in the school office.

Academics: Policies and Guidelines

Students and their families choose the Kosovo Leadership Academy because they desire a school marked by a culture of character and a passion for excellence. Expectations are high for everyone—students, staff, and parents. The environment in which high expectations are held makes achievement of high expectations possible. Thus, despite the rigor, students who exercise consistent diligence rarely fail; rather, they discover abilities they were not aware of and achieve beyond expectations. The following section of the Handbook is intended to inform, not intimidate, and to provide information parents and students need to experience academic success at the Kosovo Leadership Academy.

Mentors

Teachers serve as mentors. Their role is to assist students in their academic achievement and life at the KLA, especially as the first point of contact when a student is struggling in multiple courses. The teacher-mentors track students’ progress and ensure communication with parents. Mentors will meet every Friday to encourage and hold their mentees accountable.

Progress reports are emailed at the end of each trimester to the parents of all students. Report cards are emailed at the end of the year. Report cards and transcripts are not released until financial obligations to the KLA are met.

Teachers will regularly post grades on ThinkWave. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in the education of their child by tracking the student’s academic progress on ThinkWave. Parents should contact the KLA Office if they have questions or concerns about their student’s progress. At the parents’ and/or teacher’s request, a conference may be scheduled.

Guided Study Time

Guided Study Time (GST) will be held Monday through Thursday from 7:15 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. A teacher will be available to help students. If a student’s grade drops below a 70% the student will be required to attend GST until the student’s grade improves.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from Kosovo Leadership Academy, all Upper School students must earn a passing grade of 60 or higher in every course. Additionally, a cumulative GPA of 2.0 must be maintained.

Transient and Transfer Credits

No graduation requirement may be met by taking courses at other institutions unless the course is not offered at KLA and arrangements have been made and pre-approved in writing by the school administrators. For students transferring into KLA, credit may be awarded for courses from other schools. Each case is handled individually by the school administrators.

High School Grading Periods

Semester 1Ends: January 25,2019

Semester 2 Ends: June 15, 2019

Grade Reporting

All academic grading at the KLA will use a criterion-reference base for evaluation. The student’s work will be evaluated against an objective standard in each class.

The KLA middle school operates on a trimester system. Only trimesters and final grades appear on a student’s academic transcript. The KLA high school operates on a semester system. Only semester and final grades appear on a high student’s academic transcript.

Each student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated at the end of each year. For Upper School students, the GPA is weighted. Every numeric grade is converted to a “grade point”. The KLA does not rank its students. We believe the element of competitiveness is both inevitable and healthy, but grades at the Kosovo Leadership Academy are intended to compare students’ achievement with academic benchmarks rather than with other students’ achievements.

The following five- point scale with weighting is used in every class:

Individual grades in courses convert as follows:

A (5 = 100% - 90%) A grade of “A” indicates exceptional mastery of the course’s objectives in both knowledge and skills.

B (4 = 89% - 80%) A grade of “B” indicates solid mastery of the course’s objectives in both knowledge and skills.

C (3 = 79% - 70%) A grade of “C” indicates competent mastery of the course’s objectives in both knowledge and skills.

D (2 = 69% - 60%) A grade of “D” indicates approaching mastery of the course’s objectives in knowledge and skills.

F (1 = 59% - 0%) A grade of “F’ indicates does not meet expectations of the course’s objectives in knowledge and skills. Students receiving grades within this range will take Summer School to gain competent mastery of objectives. Summer school will be an additional tuition cost.

20

Page 21: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

*Should a grade of 2+ (D+) or lower be the final grade in a math or language course, the student must obtain tutoring over the summer and pass a placement test before the new school year begins to advance to the next level.

Academic Probation

If a student’s grade in any course is below 60 or in any two courses is below 70 (determined by the end of a trimester), the student will be put on academic probation during the next trimester. Students with marginal grades (but not on probation) or those with an established history of academic difficulties will be monitored and may be placed on probation during a trimester if necessary. Parents will receive notice from the school administrators if their child has been placed on academic probation.

Academic probation includes the following, unless the school administrators choose to consider mitigating circumstances:

A weekly meeting between the student and his/her teacher-mentor Weekly grade status report checked by his/her mentor Removal from school leadership during Academic probation Loss of privileges Must attend the Guided Study Time Monday through Thursday each week

If the weekly grade status report does not demonstrate improvement, a student on academic probation may face the following additional consequences:

Continued mandatory Guided Study Time Ineligibility for participation in any co-curricular activities (such as sports and

drama)

If the student’s grades are 70 or above in every course at the end of the next trimester, the student will be removed automatically from academic probation status. The academic probation policy is monitored and enforced by the School administrators.

Incomplete Courses

A student will be given an “I” (Incomplete) in a course when, at the end of the grading period, there is work outstanding due to illness or other circumstances beyond the student’s control. The responsibility for completing the work rests with the student. Unless other agreements have been made, failure to do so within two weeks after the completion of the trimester for which the “I” is applicable will result in a “0“, which will be recorded for the work missed and calculated into the grade for the trimester. When the work has been completed, the teacher will make the adjustment on ThinkWave and notify the school administrators so that the student’s file may be updated.

21

Page 22: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Homework

No late homework! Homework will be turned in each day for each subject by every student with no exceptions. Late homework will be a 0. No extra credit work will be given at the end of a trimester or the year in order to boost a student’s grade.

The KLA will strive for a homework load appropriate to the demands of its curriculum. If students have trouble managing their homework load, they should work constructively with the specific teachers, and only when necessary refer the matter to their Mentors. Teachers will work to stagger tests by subject throughout the week so that students do not have more than two major tests in a day.

As a matter of policy, no homework may be assigned over holidays, winter and spring breaks, or weekends between trimesters. Prior to the end-of-the-trimester exam or end-of-the-year exam, teachers should review for exams. Students will be expected to do the homework associated with the normal preparation for class during exam weeks.

Class Schedules

Teachers will provide a Class Schedule for every subject, outlining objectives, topics of discussion, projects, assignments, quizzes, and tests. The individual teacher will decide whether the Class Schedule covers a single week, a whole month, or even the entire trimester. In addition to being distributed in class, the Class Schedules will be posted on ThinkWave.

Tutoring/Academic Assistance

Academic assistance is available for students who are working diligently in and out of class, but require extra help (up to one hour per week) with class material or have missed class due to illness or other extenuating circumstance. Teachers will announce their available times.

Help Extension: Teachers will be available to answer questions about work assignments and assessments. They will be available to meet with students between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Readmission Policy

For a student to be readmitted to the School each year, he or she must: (i) earn a passing grade in each required course in the curriculum and (ii) if a high school student, maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.0. Should a student’s final grade in a math or language be less than 70, the student must obtain remedial assistance over the summer and pass a placement test before the new school year begins in order to be readmitted. The requirement for remedial assistance will be

22

Page 23: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

stated in a letter from the school administrators to the student and his or her parent(s) as a condition for admission and continued enrollment during the school year, and the student and his or her parent(s) will agree to the letter in writing.

A student on academic probation with a pattern of violating KLA Standards of Conduct, and/or who demonstrates an unwillingness to be at the KLA or has maintained a consistent negative attitude toward the KLA may not be invited back at the end of any given school year as determined by the school administrators. In addition, the children of parents who have been abusive toward faculty or unreasonably demanding may not be invited back as determined by the school administrators in his or her sole discretion. A reenrollment letter will be sent in May to students selected for readmission. The School administrators will personally notify parents of students not being invited to return.

General Information and Policies

Library Cards

The library cards will be used for students to check books out of the library. A 5-euro fee is required if an I.D. card is lost or destroyed.

When parents or visitors enter the school campus, they will be asked to turn in their residency cards and will receive a Visitors Card which must be worn while on campus.

Book Policy

In courses where books are provided, textbooks must have protective covers. Books that are property of the school are to be well maintained by the student. Students will not receive report cards until all their library books are returned. At the end of each year all textbooks that were used by students are handed in and the return of the book is recorded. Students will be charged up to the full price of a new book for lost or seriously damaged textbooks and library books. For library books not returned in the given time limit a fine of 10 cents per each day late will be charged.

Gym

The KLA has been given a wonderful sports facility and each student, parent, staff member, and visitor is to be a good steward of this facility. The gym is to be kept clean.

1. Everyone must remove their street shoes before entering the gym. Clean, proper sports shoes designed for an indoor basketball court may be worn.

2. No food, drinks, or gum are allowed in the gym. Clear plastic bottles of water with caps are allowed in the gym.

Food, chewing gum, and drinks are not allowed in the classroom, unless by explicit permission of the teacher. A student may have a clear plastic bottle of water with a cap in the classroom.

Lunch

Students have three options for lunch. They may sign up and buy a school lunch when they arrive in the morning. They may bring their lunch from home. They may buy snacks from the student government store. The cost of lunches will be between 1 and 2 euros. A monthly lunch schedule will be posted with prices, so students will know costs ahead of time.

Personal responsibility can be learned during lunch. Therefore, students will not be allowed to call home because they forgot their lunch. They will be required to problem solve for lunch, and they will learn to be more responsible.

No soda and energy drinks may be consumed on school property during breakfast or lunch hours. According to studies, the amount of sugar in soda and energy drinks weakens short- term memory which hinders academic performance. Consuming sugar during school causes the brain to release a stress hormone, disrupting the use of memory and focus. Soda and energy drinks can harm academic performance. It is not an obligation of the school to offer lunch for students and it can be terminated with a notice at any time.

Community Service

Each KLA student is required to complete twenty hours of community service. Community Service is defined as an act or service completed by a student which helps the school, the community, or a family but does not benefit the student financially. It may not be a service for an immediate family member, a relative, or a fundraiser that is a financial gain for a school activity.

The purpose of the community service requirement is to develop leaders who serve others. The mission of the Kosovo Leadership Academy is to improve communities

24

Page 25: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

by developing young people who learn, live, and lead with excellence. This will develop self-discipline, responsibility, compassion, and respect for others.

When a student completes a service, s/he needs to complete a community service form and give it to her/his mentor-teacher. Each mentor will keep track of the community service hours for each mentee. Each form must be signed by the adult supervisor of the activity and be turned in within the 30 days of the completion of service projects performed during the school year. Students should also keep track of it in their OneNote notebooks. Summer hours must be turned in by the last week of September to receive credit for the upcoming school year. No exception will be made. The 20 hours must be completed and turned in by the last day of the school year. (Seniors must complete the required hours by the end of the senior year to graduate from Kosovo Leadership Academy and to participate in graduation exercises.)

The mentor-teacher will collect completed forms and enter the information into the school management system. If the community service is not acceptable, the student will be contacted by his/her mentor.  On each form submitted, students will be required to reflect on how this service benefited the recipients and how the student benefited from performing the service.

Contacting Faculty/Scheduling Conferences

Parents are free to contact teachers and respectfully share concerns they may have through ThinkWave. If the concerns are unresolved through contact with the teacher, parents should at that point contact the school administrators through the school office. Teachers will try to respond to emails within 24 hours whenever possible. To respect the teacher’s privacy, parents are not call them at home or use a teacher’s private social media contact, such as Facebook etc.

Students are to respect teachers’ privacy. They are not to call them at home or use teacher’s private contact information or social media.

**School activities (Examples: sports, drama, festivals, Family Fun Nights, etc.) are not the time or place for parents to discuss their child’s grades with teachers.

Copy Machines

Only KLA staff may use the copy machines. The copy machines are only for school use, unless special permission is given by the school administrators.

If a student needs to print a homework assignment, make a copy of a lost assignment sheet, etc., the charge is 10 cents/copy.

Each middle and upper school student will be issued a school laptop to be used only at school. These laptops enhance the educational experience and allow the KLA to provide access to materials that are instrumental to meeting and accelerating the growth path of our students.

The use of all technology opportunities as provided by the KLA is a privilege, not a right. Any violation can be considered as grounds for losing access to technology at the school in addition to suspension and/or termination.

Student Access

By sending their children to the KLA, parents are giving permission for their children to use the technology resources of the KLA including the internet and the electronic mail system. While the internet provides substantial educational opportunities, it also provides access to material that is considered inappropriate for the KLA educational environment.

While students are held to a standard of compliance in accordance with responsible use, the parents are ultimately responsible for conveying and monitoring their activity with respect to these standards when using the technology resources as provided by the KLA.

Students and parents accept the responsible use policy when they enroll at the KLA.

Failure to use the KLA technology resources in an appropriate manner that reflects excellence will result in disciplinary action, including possible termination. In addition, the student may have his/her technology privileges suspended or even revoked.

Each laptop will be monitored through a management system to ensure it is used only for academic purposes that support the curriculum of the academy. All communication and information that is accessed through the technology resources is considered the property of the school. This material may be retrieved, monitored, deleted, destroyed or used by the KLA for any purpose at its sole discretion.

** The KLA is not responsible for any financial obligations or any other damages incurred through the use of the technology resources.

KLA Laptops

Every KLA middle and high school student will receive a laptop that is to be used solely at the KLA. The following procedures must be followed:

1. The student is responsible for keeping the laptop charged. If a power outage occurs and the student has no battery power left, they will receive an X for that class on that day for character.

2. Students are responsible to take care of the laptop as property of the school. Parents are responsible for loss of the computer or power cord, etc., and any damage that may occur.

a. Mishandling of the laptop screens have resulted in broken screens. This has been a 75 euro charge. This may increase however due to the change of our service provider.

b. Power cords that are lost will need to be paid for by the parents. Cost to replace a power cord for the Acer ES1-432 is 26 euros.

c. All other costs incurred due to improper use or care will be the responsibility of the parents of the students.

3. Currently students take their computers with them from class to class. Many students have purchased laptop bags to facilitate proper care. This is encouraged. If a bag is not purchased, the student must properly back the computer in the box in which it came. Not properly protecting the computer will result in disciplinary action.

4. During lunch, P.E. or any other class where the computer is not needed, the computer must be left in the computer shelves…not on the floor, on a desk in a classroom, on the lunch room table, in the locker room, etc.

5. No computer should be around water or any other liquids.6. Students must know where their laptop is at all times. At the end of the day

each student is required to properly pack and store his/her computer in the appropriate location. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.

7. Students may not write, draw on, place stickers or decorate the computers in any way and remove stickers that have important data recorded.

8. Any violation of responsible computer use and care will result in disciplinary action. Respect for property is an attitude of excellence.

Athletic Procedures

Participation in sports is an integral part of a student’s educational experience, and KLA will attempt to provide athletic opportunities for students who wish to participate. The KLA participates in those sports that are conducive to our size and mission. The appropriate forms must be completed and signed for students to participate.

Physical Education and Fitness are required for students.

Prior to a student participating in any sport at KLA, both student and the parent/guardian must sign and have on file in the school office the following forms:

Emergency Medical Form KLA Conduct Pledge KLA Athletic Pledge Physical Evaluation/Medical History Form Acknowledgement of Rules Form

Participation Requirements

All students participating on an athletic team will receive a sports credit as an elective on their transcripts. They are expected to attend all scheduled practices and games. If a student misses a game or practice for reasons not cleared by the coach, the coach has the right to treat the failure to attend as an unexcused absence, which could result in not playing the next game.

Being a member of a team is an obligation. Team membership is a privilege that is not superseded by one’s personal schedule or academic demands. Excessive unexcused absences can result in the loss of one’s sports credit and dismissal from the team.

Athletic Code of Conduct

Sportsmanship of Players and Coaches

KLA athletes display admirable sportsmanship when they:

accept the calls or reprimands of the coach or referee without protest, use language seasoned with grace, give maximum effort, refrain from speaking critically about their teammates and opponents, guard the safety of their teammates and opponents, and recognize the good play of their teammates and the opposing team members.

Sportsmanship of Fans

35

Page 36: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Parents and other fans display sportsmanship when they

avoid distracting players on the court or field, cheer with positive expressions, and honor and respect the opposing team’s players, coaches and fans.

The goal of the Kosovo Leadership Academy is to be known as a school that has contagious enthusiasm for fair play, courtesy toward the opposing school’s fans and players, and respect for referees and umpires. The reputation of the KLA is at stake in the behavior demonstrated by KLA coaches, players, and fans at every game.

Guidelines

1. As the KLA develops an athletic program, emphasis will be placed on the development of fundamental skills, game strategies and team unity.

2. Depending on the number of students that come out for a team, teams may be chosen through a system of “trying- out” determined by each head coach.

3. Coaches will allow playing time in practice and games over the course of the season to foster maturity in athletes.

4. Students first, winning second. Wins are important, but do not stand alone in determining the success of a season. Team unity, strong work ethic and the sense of pride that develop over the course of the season are all factors in determining success.

5. Since personal development involves learning what is required for success, including winning in competition, the coaches will exercise discretion to play the athletes necessary to win the game.

Safety

Safety is paramount with athletics. Coaches and administrative personnel continually strive to provide a safe and enjoyable environment in which to participate. It is vital to understand that participation in athletics involves inherent risks.

Coaches and administrative personnel are obligated to act in a prudent manner to prevent foreseeable accident and injuries. They should respond to unexpected circumstances according to guidelines set forth by the school’s safety procedures.

Student Emergency Information & Medical Release Form will be copied and issued to coaches to carry with them to all practices and games. Copies will also be kept on file in the KLA Office. This form must be completed before participation in any athletic activity.

Eligibility Requirements

36

Page 37: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

If a student’s grade in any course is below 60 or in any two courses is below 70, that student will be required to meet with the school administrators, coach, and teachers who are involved to determine eligibility and the best course of action.

Policy and Procedures

1. Punctuality: Athletes must be properly dressed and ready in the designated area at the designated starting time. Coaches will determine the consequences for tardiness.

2. Practices are closed. Parents, classmates, or friends may not observe or participate in practices.

Holiday Practices

Holiday and Sunday practices are prohibited. Saturday practices will be determined by the coach.

No School = No Practice + No Games

All team members will travel to and from games with designated KLA transportation.

Parents may transport their child under written/verbal agreement with the coach.

Parents are not allowed to transport other team members without written approval by a parent and consent from a coach.

It is the responsibility of all athletes to follow van guidelines as set forth by their coach. In addition, the athletes must maintain van cleanliness.

Coaches must fill out a van request form prior to their first game. Use of school vans is by reservation only. Reservations are made with the Operations Manager.

If a van is not available, the coach must arrange appropriate transportation to the contest.

All approved van drivers must have a copy of their driver’s license and insurance on file with the school administrators.

Van keys can be picked up in the school’s office the day of departure.

Athletic Uniforms

37

Page 38: kleadershipacademy.org  · Web view2019-04-16 · Problem-based learning: Students are challenged by a meaningful question with a real-world problem to solve or a design challenge

Sport appropriate attire and shoes must be worn at all practices, games, and physical education classes. All students will respect the property of others and will ensure that it remains safe for the owner’s use. No student has the right to take or use anything without permission. Therefore, students may not wear another student’s athletic outfit or shoes. It is considered stealing when a student uses another’s belongings without permission or hides another student’s belongings.

The KLA will in most cases provide competition uniforms to be worn during games only. Athletic attire may not be worn to school without approval of the coach and School administrators.

Athletes must return team uniforms to their designated coach in satisfactory condition, no later than one week after the final athletic contest for the season. Parents of athletes will be financially responsible for uniforms not returned after the one-week period. When uniforms are lost or not returned, it creates undue burdens and complications for future teams.

Class Attendance

To practice or participate in an athletic contest, students must attend a minimum of two consecutive blocks that day, excluding lunch. Any student leaving school due to illness will not be able to participate that day in after school sports. The student or parent should request an exception as early as possible, preferably no less than one day in advance.

Selection of Teams

Prior to any athletic season, the coaches will decide whether to hold tryouts to select members for the teams.

Playing Time

Playing time is a privilege and must be earned. Players are expected to attend all scheduled practices. Every effort should be made to notify the coach in advance when a student will not be able to attend practice.

Coaches are encouraged to play all eligible players in each game during the regular season.

Coaches should play as many players as feasible. Playing time is based on coaching decisions made during practice and the contest.

Exceptions to the above guidelines include:

1. Missing team practice(s)

38

2. Attitude and effort 3. Violation of team rules

Lines of Communication

Please adhere to the following steps whenever important information regarding any aspect of the athletic program – including concerns, grievances, or questions – must be communicated:

1. Players must first speak to their coach. 2. The Coach must take his/her concerns to the School administrators.

* If players, or parents directly approach the School administrators with a complaint, they will be referred to the Coach.

Supervision of Athletes

All athletic areas in use must be supervised by a qualified adult. These areas include the gym, weight room, and all athletic fields. Athletes may not work out by themselves or participate in any unsupervised activity. Coaches have a duty to supervise the members of their team. This involves always being physically present at practice. Coaches must remain with players until their transportation needs are met after all practices and games. All athletes must be properly supervised during practice and while traveling to and from athletic events or games. Athletic trips must be supervised by at least two chaperones. If female students are on the trip, at least one chaperone must be female.

Athletic Awards

Special Season Awards: For each season, each athletic team will receive two special individual awards. The yearly awards are:

1. Leadership Award: The athlete who displays maturity and is a leader on and off the playing court or field. This team leader displays excellence through sportsmanship.
