Technology may be key

• 93% of youth (12-17) are online every day (Pew, 2007)

• Connecting with and relating to youth in ways they prefer may be key to keeping them involved and interested.

Jane: Web 2.0 worker extraordinaire.

8 am—Jane plugs her iPod into her car and listens to podcasts on the way to work. She selects a global climate change podcast from NASA that she downloaded last night and a JetStreaming podcast from NPR.

9 am—Jane updates her blog, sharing reflections, thoughts, and strategies for what she’s doing this week. The blog allows feedback and visibility to program participants, stakeholders, and colleagues around the world.

10 am—Jane checks her feedreader for updates to blogs she’s following, as well as new results on a Google News search for “Global Climate Change” and a search for grants in her area of youth education.

10:30—Jane glances through her latest Twitter updates. She notices some interesting items from the UM News Service as well as a few posts of interest from fellow youth educators.

11 am—Begins work on her current project, new curriculum on climate change for this spring. She starts by setting up a wiki and sharing it with her team. Everyone can now edit the curriculum outline and add documents, photos, and links to the wiki.

She adds the wiki to her feedreader to track when it is updated by her colleagues.

12 noon—Instant messages an office colleague, telling her to stop over when she is at a good stopping point for lunch.

1:00—Writes and records an introduction to the global warming unit to accompany the new curriculum. This podcast will be shared online to promote the unit and engage parents and stakeholders in the discussion.

3:00—Using photo sharing sites online that utilize the “creative commons” license, she finds a number of good photos to use in presentations and materials. She posts links to them on the wiki for use in the curriculum development.

4:00—Sets up an online meeting for two days from now so that the team can share their progress and brainstorm more ideas.
