Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide?

In 5 seconds or less….

Weather is simply the state of the atmosphere

That means that the weather has everything to do with the

atmosphere….and the atmosphere has everything to do with weather..

Page 10: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

So to understand weather, we must understand the

atmosphere

Page 11: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

What is the atmosphere?

Page 12: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

The atmosphere is the layer(s) of gases that surrounds the earth. It is like an invisible

blanket that wraps around the planet

Page 13: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

Another way to describe the atmosphere is like

Page 14: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

AN OCEAN

OF AIR

Page 15: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….
Page 16: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

If the atmosphere is like an ocean of air. Where are we in

that ocean?

At the bottom…

Some gases in the atmosphere are:

Nitrogen

Oxygen

Argon

Carbon Dioxide

Page 19: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

What do these gases make?…

AIR

Page 20: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

These gases are floating around in the atmosphere

around us…

Page 21: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

What keeps those molecules in the atmosphere?

Why don’t they fly off into

space????

Page 22: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

Gravity!

Page 23: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

If gravity is holding all of this ‘sea of air’ in place,

where will the atmosphere be the most dense?

Page 24: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….
Page 25: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….
Page 26: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

Imagine that all of the atmosphere is pushing ‘down’

So, we will feel the most weight of the atmosphere closer to the

earth’s……

Page 27: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

SURFACE

Page 28: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….
Page 29: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

Temperature

is how hot or cold the atmosphere is

Page 30: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

What determines the temperature?

Page 31: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….
Page 32: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

The temperature of a place is affected by the amount of the

sun’s rays (solar radiation) that reaches the earth’s surface

Page 33: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

REACHES THE EARTH’S SURFACE

Page 34: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

The earth is not warmed by the direct heating of the atmosphere by the

sun’s rays

Page 35: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….
Page 36: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

Page 38: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

So we know that the atmosphere prevents some solar radiation (sun’s rays) from reaching the

earth’s surface

Page 39: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

So what would happen if the sun’s rays had to travel through more

atmosphere?

Page 40: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

What about if the sun’s rays were pointed at an angle?

Page 41: WEATHER. Which elements of weather can you pick out in the next slide? In 5 seconds or less….

Did you know the earth is tilted?

Look at the higher latitudes.

What happens to the sun’s rays?

Look how much of the atmosphere the rays have to go through at the higher

latitude
