Water travels in a cycle yes it does.

Page 2: Weather unit water cycle

The water cycle is driven by the sun

• Water is always moving

• Evaporation

• condensation• precipitation• transpiration

Page 3: Weather unit water cycle

Evaporation

• Heat causes liquid water to turn into a gas

• everyday tons of water evaporates from oceans, lakes, rivers, & moist soil

• This warm gas rises

Page 4: Weather unit water cycle

Condensation

• As water vapor cools it turns from a gas to a liquid

• when a large amount of water vapor condenses on dust particles, a cloud forms

Page 5: Weather unit water cycle

Types of condensation

• Humidity• dew

• frost• fog

Page 6: Weather unit water cycle

Precipitation

• Water falling back to Earth

• when water in the clouds gets to heavy, then gravity goes to work

Page 7: Weather unit water cycle

Types of precipitation

• Rain • sleet

• snow• hail• drizzle

• dew

Page 8: Weather unit water cycle

Runoff

• After precipitation, water that runs back into a river, lake, or ocean

Page 9: Weather unit water cycle

Groundwater

• Some rain soaks into the soil forming pockets underground

• eventually most of this returns to a larger body of water

Page 10: Weather unit water cycle

Transpiration

• Loss of water vapor from plants

• Evaporates out through the leaves

Page 11: Weather unit water cycle

How does this affect weather?

???????????????

• What causes evaporation?

• Where on Earth does evaporation occur?

• What causes condensation?

• How do mountain ranges affect the water cycle?

• How does temperature affect precipitation?
