Style mixJessica sits in one of a pair of vintage leather Ikea chairs in the living room of her seaside bungalow. The contrasting modern table is by Established & Sons, which complements the sleek, white Hunter floor lamp by Ruben Lighting.
JESSICA AnD DAnIEL wERE So EnAmouRED with this house that they bought it instantly. Designed and built in the 1940s by its architect owner, the bungalow had a distinct mediterranean influence that appealed to Jessica, whereas her husband Daniel, an architect himself, was more impressed with the coastal location. However, blinded by the beauty of the house, the couple neglected to notice the leaking roof and rotting floors. All of a sudden, a larger renovation was on the cards.RenovatIon ReScue what Jessica and Daniel initially thought would take about three weeks – a quick cosmetic overhaul – in fact turned out to be a full-on renovation that took more than six months. The house was in worse condition than they had initially thought. “I can’t believe I didn’t notice,” Daniel says. “I have designed about 20 residential properties, and even taken an active part in renovating some of them! I should have seen it.” And so, the couple got to work. They replaced everything – the facade, doors, floors, windows – but were conscious of restoring it to be the same kind of building it was before. Style compRomISe As for interior decorating, that was more of a battle of the wills between the pair. “we are absolutely not in synch with our tastes and styles,” Daniel says. “Jessica chooses pieces with a sense of history and soul, whereas I like new designs – even to the point of designing my own.” The only solution was to compromise. Daniel designed the kitchen, bathroom and lighting, while Jessica was in charge of furniture and accessories, sourcing them mostly from antique centres and secondhand shops. The pieces she did buy new, such as the Established & Sons coffee table, are modern designs that work well with her secondhand 20th-century pieces like the character-filled vintage Ikea side chairs.
Bold & BRave New ways to decorate Despite their opposing styles, this couple created a cohesive home by using a variety of colours and mixed materials
tIp#2 Instead of a feature wall, consider a feature floor and paint it a bright colour!
tIp#1 Keep some walls free of art and adornment for a fresh and spacious feel.

who lives here? | Architect and designer Daniel Heckscher and his wife Jessica Folcker, a musician. notedesignstudio.se1 Renovation timeframe About six months.2 combined design Daniel and Jessica have completely
opposite decorating styles – he likes ultra-modern and she likes vintage. However, they meld them together beautifully through a uniformity of colour, shape and underlying theme of minimalism.3 Colour inspiration For years Jessica had dreamed of
living in a house as brightly coloured as the place inhabited by artist Frida Kahlo in Coyoacan, mexico. Kahlo’s house is now a museum and still bears the same blue walls, red floors and yellow trims as it did decades ago.
tIp#5 Change the colour of metal furniture by having it powdercoated. Search the internet for local businesses.
tIp#4 outdoor furniture can look fab inside and it’s great for families with young (and messy!) kids.
tIp#3 Continue wall tiles from your kitchen into the dining area for an interesting and cohesive wall treatment.

Dining nook The dining area is located
next to the kitchen, so it carries the same finish on
the floor and walls. The Enrico Franzolini
“Agratable” table is teamed with Easy chairs
by Jerszy Seymour.

Touch of vibrancy (above)The kitchen has lots of brightly coloured accents, such as the blue cork and metal bar stools, which Daniel designed, a yellow bench frame and yellow tap by Vola.
mIxed mateRIalS one of the key design features in this house is the use of different materials. The kitchen, for example, has wooden floorboards, tiled walls and a timber-panelled island bench with a powdercoated yellow steel frame and marble and metal top. A brass rangehood hangs above it and a pair of cork and metal stools sit under the breakfast bar. The bathroom is another mixed-material creation with mosaic tiles, Corian sink and brass fittings. The vanity is made from birch plywood finished in nautical lacquer to make it waterproof. meanwhile, half of the master bedroom is clad in timber panels. colouR code Jessica loves the colour blue, and it features predominantly throughout the home. The floorboards in the kitchen, dining and living areas are painted in a vivid teal that imparts the palest hint of colour on the white walls. Daniel’s input comes by way of yellow, in the kitchen and dining chairs. To brighten the black and white bathroom, he had the Corian sink painted pink. Elsewhere, they have both chosen colourful artworks to display. “we really like this way of decorating,” Daniel says. “Looking at our house, you can see that it has influences from both of us – and that’s what makes it complete.”
Feeling blue To offset the floorboards, Jessica and Daniel chose a white sofa and decorated it with a pile of blue cushions to tie the look together.
tIp#6 mix and match cushions in the same colour family to liven up a sofa but keep the look aesthetically balanced.
tIp#7 Install a wall of window panels rather than one large sheet of glass to create a feature – then keep it curtain-free to allow the design to shine.
tIp#8 Pile up ottomans to decorate an empty space and provide extra seating.

Neutral bright Instead of a bedhead, Jessica and Daniel had an entire wall clad in plywood panels, which forms a great backdrop to the bright bedlinen by Hay. Bare globes provide bedside lighting without compromising the pared-back feel of the room.
Bold lustre The bathroom is a work of art
in black and white mosaics with colourful accents and
gorgeous brass fittings. Daniel couldn’t find a sink he
liked, so he had this Corian one custom-painted pink.
It provides a fun and funky contrast to the more
traditional elements. The little cork stool is from The
Conran Shop.
brass fittings shine against black tiles
tIp#9 use tinted grout to complement your tiles, like the chocolate and ochre hues used with the black and white mosaics in this bathroom.
tIp#10 Furnish your wetroom. A stool or chair is a great place to stack towels – just make sure the material is waterproof.
tIp#11 use plywood panels to cover uneven wall surfaces, and then leave them unfinished for a handcrafted look. It’s an effective and affordable wallcovering solution.
