”3 in 1”project

1. Mapping the infection pressure in farrowing pen

2. Test the effect of p-phenol

3. Test the effect of sea weed

Page 9: Weaned piglets and diarrehea

Mapping - method

• Faeces from piglets with diarrhea and autopsied dead pigs were analyzed

• During 2018 around140 analyses were conducted from 5 herds

For e.g. E Coli, coccidia and intestinal worms

Page 10: Weaned piglets and diarrehea

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 774340

Mapping - results

• Not only E Coli F 4 and F 18 were found….

….all kinds of bacteria, viruses, coccidia and intestinal worms were there

Test of p-phenol - method

Control: Sows Sucklingpigs Weaned pigs

Ordinary organic feed x x x

2500 mg. zinc, twoweeks after weaning Yes

Products with phenol-rich compounds No No No

Test of p-phenol - method

P-phenol - results

• Group 1 to 4 had 0,2 % phenol as recommended from the producer

• Group 5 had 0,4 % phenol – at own initiatives

• All 5 groups developed severe diarrhea 6 to 7 days after weaning

• Mortality rate was up to 10 % in the phenol groups - the control group had 0 %

• The pigs died very quickly (½ a day)

• We were forced to give high level of zinc again for all pigs and antibiotic for some

Sea weed - Set up - Aarhus University

• 5 groups with 18 weaned piglets

• Control without zinc or seaweed

• Test with zinc

• Test with Saccharina latissima (Sukkertang)

• Test with Ulva lactuca (Søsalat)

• Test with Ascophyllum nodosum (Buletang)

Page 15: Weaned piglets and diarrehea

Seaweed - Results

• The results of the current study showed that inclusion of 5 % A. nodosum, S. latissima and U. lactuca did not significantly enhance growth performance of the pigs.

• It showed a tendency to decrease the incidence and severity of post-weaning diarrhea.

• However, the pigs fed seaweed showed the same growth potential as pigs fed control diets. It is not possible to say whether inclusion of these seaweeds can substitute high levels of zinc oxide in the post weaned piglet diet only based on growth performance parameters and faecal characteristics.

Discussion

• Was the doses of phenol too low?

• Was the doses of seaweed to high?

• Do the processing have influence on the effect?

Page 17: Weaned piglets and diarrehea

Conclusion

• E Coli is not the only reason for diarrehea

• Until now no quick fix is found

• Focus on management helps a lot

• Some already manage

Page 18: Weaned piglets and diarrehea

What to do then?

• Be aware of good management! It is efficient!

• No additive can replace good management

• Know your enemy – get faeces / dead piglets analyzed

Page 19: Weaned piglets and diarrehea

Examples from the fact sheet

• Focus on the health of both sow and piglets during the suckling period

• Up-date the vaccination plan… typical every 6 month

• Consider to wean outdoor – move the sow and leave the piglets

• Be aware of very carefully handling of the piglets if moved to a stable

• Ensure access to drinking water during the weaning process

• Find your individual solution concerning feed….. Not two herds are similar

• If you are fond of natural ingredient use it!

Jornada tècnica

Dimarts 2 de febrer de 2021

Claus de l’èxit del

deslletament dels garrins

en porcicultura ecològica

Organització

Departament d’Agricultura,

Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació
