American Martyrs Mission Statement We, the diverse Catholic family of American Martyrs, are spiritually centered in the Word and the Eucharist. Our warm, welcoming community creates an atmosphere for a wonderful faith experience as we gather at the table of the Lord to help each other grow in Christ and live according to His teachings. Inspired by the faith and example of our patrons, the North Americans Martyrs, and the Blessed Mother, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we work together to spread the message of Jesus to all.

American Martyrs Celebrates the Sacraments

Penance: Every Saturday at 4:00pm—4:45pm (Also at anytime convenient upon request)

Baptisms: The last Sunday of the month at 2:00 p.m., except during Lent and Christmas Seasons. Parents must speak to Deacon Stan and are required to attend an instruction class on the second to last Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the Murray Center.

Sacrament of the Sick Anointing of the Sick: This sacrament is available for any baptized Catholic who is seriously ill or

suffering the effects of advanced age. Please call the rectory to make an appointment for a priest to come to the home, or call anytime for a sudden illness. If serious surgery is scheduled, call to arrange for the anointing before you enter the hospital.

A communal celebration of this sacrament is celebrated annually.

Pastoral Care to the Homebound: We are concerned about parishioners who are homebound and would like to receive the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Reconciliation or the Anointing of the Sick. If you are homebound, or if you know someone who is

unable to come to Mass, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office at (718) 464-4582. Visits will be happily arranged for you.

Holy Matrimony: Call the Parish Office for information and appointment with a priest

at least six months prior to the date you wish.

Be Vigilant of Child Abuse At All Times!

It is vitally important that we are constantly vigilant-that we always observe the behaviors of those who interact with children. And we must always communicate our concerns to the appropriate parties. Sometimes this means communicating our safety concerns to our children. And sometimes this means communicating our concerns about seemingly inappropriate behavior to those who are in a position to intervene. Parents must also listen carefully to their children and observe both their children's activities and the behavior of older children and adults who interact with them. When children exhibit dramatic behavioral changes, adults must find out what caused the changes. Being aware of what's happening with our children means talking to, listening to, and observing them‐at every opportunity.

Candy my Love

Yes, my first sweetheart was a Red Hot named Candy. She was definitely a Hot Tamale. The first time I saw that little Chicklet I thought, “Hubba Bubba!” On our very first date I let my little Sugar Baby drive my car out to her father’s farm. When she turned left at the Powerhouse, on the corner of Clark and 5th Avenue, my Tootsie Rolled the car over. She had tried to apply the Brach’s, but we Rolo over and she wound up putting a Dentyne my car. Three dents to be precise. A Trident, if you will. She actually pulled me out of the crash. She was a LifeSaver. I was seeing Dots. It was a real Jawbreaker. There was no point in trying to Raisinette up because it was totally Crunch’ed and all four tires were Blo-Popped. I’d have to wait until PayDay to get it fixed. I was hoping it wouldn’t cost 100 Grand. I know she didn’t Mento do it, but it still Razzles me to this very day. Anyway, we continued walking down the street to where her family lived. It was a Rocky Road and I was able to See’s the Sno-Caps on the mountains in the background. When we got there, I could see her father picking Cotton Candy in the fields. There were acres of Candy Corn, too. They had chickens, pigs and cows, too, but one of the cows had run dry. Apparently it was a Milk Dud. Her dad was a large man. His name was Henry, but he went by the nickname of Big Red. My Tootsie’s Pop was a real Goober, with a Jelly Belly. He seemed like a very happy farmer, so I guess you could say that he was a Jolly Rancher, but I wouldn’t because these puns seem to be getting worse and worse. At any rate, he loved his tobacco and had a Big League Chew between his cheek and gums. He handed me a Sour Apple and it was very Juicy Fruit, but it had a Gummy Worm in it and it made my stomach feel all Wrigley. I definitely thought her Pop Rocks, though. Then she introduced me to the rest of her family. She had three brothers and two sisters. Her mother, Kit Kat, went inside the house to Freshen-Up. The boys, who were called the 3 Musketeers, were all a bunch of Dum-Dums. The oldest was Henry Jr., and the twins were Mike & Ike. They were Slo-Pokes, but Nerds for sure. She had an older sister named Reese and the youngest was a cute, little Pixie-Stix named Baby Ruth. Her older sister offered me some Bottle Caps, but her older brother accidentally spilled Reese’s Pieces. Oh Henry didn’t mean to do it. I know Junior Mint to do the right thing, but he was just a Butterfinger. Well, after a few Snickers and Chuckles, we ditched the Runts and went behind a barn that had Red Vines growing on it. She gave me a Kiss and it was like a Starburst. I was on Mars or the Milky Way. I was definitely in Orbit. Skor!

Have a Blessed Week Fr. Peter

Floater and Smitty

American Martyrs in House Comedians Floater: When to the bank the other day to borrow money. All the staff wore masks; it was hard to tell which one was The Loan Arranger. Smitty: I didn’t think wearing orthopedic shoes would help but I stand corrected. Floater: Insurance companies are warning campers if your tent is stolen during the night you won’t be covered. Smitty: If you were asked what your favorite dessert was, would you struggle to answer it or would it be a piece of cake? Floater: Man shot 200 times with an upholstery gun. Surgeons revealed he is now “full recovered.” Smitty: I never use turn signals when I’m driving. It’s nobody else’s business where I’m going. Floater: iRetired. There’s a nap for that. Smitty: So a neighbor knocked on my front door at 3am! Luckily I was already up playing the bag pipes. Floater: I’m going to buy my wife a refrigerator for her birthday. I can’t wait to see her face light up when she opens it! Smitty: Lately, when someone asks me “What day is it?” I’m start to hear Jeopardy music and sweat while they wait for my answer.
