Who Are Northumberland Players?
AtNorthumberlandPlayersourmissionistoprovideopportunitiestoparticipateinallaspectsofqualitytheatre.Inits41years.NorthumberlandPlayers,anot-for-profitcomminitytheatre,haswonnumerousTheatreOntarioawardsforperformance,directing,musicandproduction.Itsactiveyouththeatreprogramincludesamajorchildren’sproductionpresentedeveryChristmasseasonanddramacampsthatrunthroughoutthesummermonths.Over300enthusiastic,un-paidvolunteers,whoworkedasactors,directors,producers,setbuilders,costumemakers,etc.,lastyearareproofthereispassionforlivetheatreinNorthumberlandCounty.Lastyear,13,000ticketsweresoldforourperformances.Bysupportingournot-for-profittheatrecompany,yourentertainmentdollarsstayinthecommunity,creatingculturalandeconomicbenefitsthatripplethroughoutourcommunity.HomeforNorthumberlandPlayersisthehistoricSecondStreetFirehallinCobourg.ThebuildinghousesthePlayers'administrativeoffice,rehearsalspaces,andaground-floortheatre.TheFirehallFounders'Theatreisanintimatevenuewithcomfortableseatingthatcanbearrangedinvariousconfigurationstopresentinnovativetheatretosmalleraudiences.Unit4,450CampbellStreetinCobourghousesCobourgCostumes,thePlayers'vastcollectionofperiodandcontemporarycostumes,allofwhichareavailableforrentals.NorthumberlandPlayersalsoleasesTheThirdSpaceonLoveshinRoadforsetstorageandconstruction.Over13,000peopleattendedourproductionslastyear.Wehopethisyearevenmorewillseeourshows.Wewelcomemembersandvolunteerstojoinusinthefunofproducingqualitytheatre.BeaPlayer-Therearemanyroles!•MembershaveasayintheoperationofNorthumberlandPlayers.IndividualMembershipsare$25.AFamilyMembershipof$40includesspousesand,asnon-votingmembers,childrenandyouth.

Director's Notes Makenomistakeaboutit,eventhoughAlfredHitchcock's1935filmThe39StepswasconsideredtobeoneofthetopBritishfilmsofalltime,thisplayiswrittenentirelyforlaughs!SimonCorbleandNobbyDimonadaptedthefour-charactermelodramaofTheThirty-NineStepsfromthe1915JohnBuchannovel.PatrickBarlowwrotethisadaptationin2005andithasbeentouringtheworldsince.Youdon'tneedtoknowthefilmtounderstanditasaparody,butitreferencesmanyofHitchcock’sfilmslikeRearWindow,StrangersonaTrain,Psycho,VertigoandNorthbyNorthwest.Ifyousawanyoftheoldactionfilmsyouwillappreciatethisgenre.Ontheotherhand,itisimpossibletonotusesomeofthesillinessofMelBrooksandMontyPythonwhendirectingthisplay.
Iwantedtomakeitahugefarcicaltheatricaleventwithsomegreatoldfashionedstage-craftconsistentwithtechniquesofthe1930speriod.Ineededatalentedcastandstagecrewandacreativeanddedicatedprops,costumeandbuildingcrew.Itwasimportanttoimplythatthesearethingsanoldtheatremighthavesittingaround.Thetechnicalaspectsoflightingandsoundwereaschallengingasalargemusical.Thecostumes,thestageprops,thesetpieceswerealldesignedandbuiltforashowthatrequiresfastcostumechangesandmultipleusesofprops.Itwasimportanttousestagepiecesformultipleusestokeepthepaceatlightningspeed.Thedesignhadtobesuchthatactorsandbackstagecrew(thereisasmallarmybackthere)worktogetherseamlesslytogivetheappearanceofdozensofcharacters.
Thentherearetheactors.Theconceitofthisshowisthat4actorsplayprobably80differentcharacters.Wereallyhavelosttrack.Rehearsalswereexhaustingandconfusingasactorschangecharactersonthefly.Betweenscenestheychangethesetsandchangecostumes.Howthetwoclowns,DaveClarkandRobDavidson,kepttheircharactersapartstillamazesme.HowGarretLeefliesaroundstage,rarelycomingoff,isaphysicalfeatinitself.StephanieCarrabinbringsheractingtalentscreatingthreememorablecharacters.TheshowisaphysicalrollercoasterandI’msureallcastmembershavelostsomeweight.Thankstothecastforyourpatienceandyourwillingnesstoexperiment.
Youwillbeimpressedbythelayersofstagecraftthatthesededicatedandridiculouslytalentedartistshaveputtogether.AttimesIfoundithardtokeepupwiththeirambitiousdesignsandcreativeproblemsolving.Thiswasanambitiousprojectthathastaken5monthstomakeithappen.Thankstotheteamleaders,MikeSonosky,projectcoordinator;AnnHancock,costumes;SharonAnderson,prop;JodyLedgerwoodandteam,painting.PleasereadtheprogramforthecompletelistandyouwillrecognizethiseffortasIcannotpossiblythankeveryone.
