Fellow Magicos, Is it really almost February 2015? How did that happen? As you know, our next meeting will be your opportunity to sell some magic items that you don’t want any more and also a chance to acquire some new things at a really good price. Unfortunately, I will miss the meeting. My wife and I are going to Chile and Argentina to explore those countries and to drink a LOT of their excellent wine. I will undoubtedly do some magic along the way. Years ago I made a button that says “Will Do Magic For Wine.” It gets a lot of laughs and also requests to do a trick or two. Not only do we have fun, but it also has led many times to some special treatment (like expensive wines not normally served to tourists and fun conversations with the manager or own-er). I encourage you to try this at any winery you visit. That brings us to the subject of “impromptu” magic. I don’t carry a deck of cards with me, but I always carry rubber bands (they live on my eye glass case). I carry some small colored ones for doing “jumping rubber bands” (very basic but it’s amazing how much people love it) and number 19 bands for “crazy man’s handcuffs,” “pen up the rubber band,” etc. That’s usually all that’s need-ed, but in my wife’s purse is a card holder with several packet tricks as backup. Maybe we will have a meeting some time that’s dedicated to “impromptu” magic. There are also great things we can do with regular straws, table napkins, salt shakers, etc. If you are not familiar with any of the effects that I’ve mentioned, I would be glad to share them with you when I’m back in town. In the meantime, have fun at the meeting and keep practicing your magic!

Trick of the Month.

To be named Setup: None Performance: Have spectator shuffle the cards. You may even have another spectator shuffle the cards. Take back the cards and spread on table showing a completely shuffled deck. While doing this get a look at the second card from the bottom of the deck and remember it. Combine the deck and ask spectator to cut the deck into two equal parts. Cover the two half’s with your two hands. Ask spectator to point to any hand to be lifted. No matter which one he chooses the spectator gets the bottom half of the deck. To determine how good he/she cut the cards have them counted to the ta-ble one at a time. To make sure that there is no set up have them bury the top card. They are to look at the top card and remember it. If possible have it shown to others. Bury the card within the packet and shuffle the packet. Exchange the packets with the spectator. Instruct him/her to randomly lay out their cards on the table and you will not look while they are doing that. While you back is turned relocate the chosen card seventh from the top of the packet you’re holding. When spectator is done he/she is to tell you so you can turn around. Drop the packet you’re holding off to the side of the table. Take spectators wrist and have him/her extend one finger as a pointer. You will try to ascertain their selection by sensing vibration or any other unseen manifestation. (For this explanation let’s assume the chosen card was the Jack of Hearts.) While passing over the cards stop at a Diamond, move it to the side and say that you sense that it was a red card. Continue and eventually stop at a ten, move it to the side and say that you sense it was a high card. Again move over the cards and stop at a seven and move it to the side. Repeat the feelings you got while picking out these three cards but you’re not sure about the seven. Finally say that it is not part of the selection but where the selection is located. Pick up the other packet, previously put aside, and count out to the sev-enth card. Hold it face down and ask the spectator what was their selection. When they tell you it was the Jack of Hearts display the card in your hand.

JAY MARSHALL Jay Marshall was a personal friend for over 37 years. We visited one another and shared many good times together hunting for collectibles and pranking one an-other at conventions. When Jay was told he was to be made "dean" of the Society of American Magicians, he asked what job responsibilities he would have. When he was told "none," he smiled and replied, "That's the job for me!"

James Ward Marshall was born August 29, 1919 in Abington, Massachusetts. He became interested in doing magic at the tender age of six. It was about this time (1925) he was taken to see a performance of the great Harry Houdini. He later ad-mitted that he fell asleep during the show. A few years later his eagerness to be-come a magician was obvious when he traded his bicycle for the money to purchase a mail order course in magic. Marshall dropped out of college to pursue a career on the stage. He worked eagerly developing routines. At a magic convention he met Naomi Baker (daughter of magician Al Baker) and they were married. Over the ensuing years two sons were born to them. One of those, Sandy, continues to run Magic, Inc. During World War II Jay entertained the troops, "island-hopping" all over the Pacific. A skilled ventriloquist as well as a magician, he decided his vent dummy was too cumbersome to lug with him during the constant traveling, so he created "Lefty," a glove with eyes and rabbit ears that transported easily and became one of his most popular routines. After his divorce from Naomi he married Frances Ireland (the widow of Laurie Ireland). Together they operated the Ireland Magic Company. The business would eventually be called Magic, Inc. Much in demand as a performer, Jay appeared fourteen times on Ed Sulli-van's television show, played New York's famous Palace Theater and appeared at the Palladium in London. In Las Vegas he was the opening act for many headliners like Frank Sinatra, Liberace and Milton Berle. In addition to being a popular performer, Jay was an avid writer, collector and editor of all things relating to magic. He had a vast knowledge of the history of magic and vaudeville. In the 1950's he edited the magazine, New Phoenix. And his collec-tion of posters was so extensive that he sold it to David Copperfield for his magic museum. Jay, with Francis, wrote several magic books on performance. He is also giv-en credit for developing a number of tricks including the Japanese Thumb Tie." Fran-cis wrote a column on the Chicago magic scene that ran for years in the Linking Ring. In 1992 he was honored by the S.A.M. be being given the title "dean," an hon-or only seven previous magicians had received in the organization's history. For many years Jay and Francis hosted the annual Magic Collector's Association con-ventions in Chicago. On May 10, 2005, after a series of heart attacks, Jay Marshall passed away in Chicago. His hand puppet "Lefty" is now in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. along with such other famous vent pup-pets like Charlie McCarthy and Kermit the Frog. A juggler is sent to hell for his sins. As he is being taken to his place of eternal torment, he sees a magician do-ing card tricks for a couple of beautiful woman. "What a rip-off," the juggler muttered. I have to roast for all of eternity, and that magician gets to spend his time doing card tricks for beautiful women!" Jabbing the juggler with his pitchfork, Satan snarled: "Who are you to question these women's punishment?"...
