Vocabulary you should know

• Concentration: exclusive attention to one object

• Abundant: present in great quantity• Distinguish: to mark as different• Decay: to rot; to decompose• Hibernation: to withdraw; to spend the winter

in close quarters

• This layer of the rainforest is the tallest• The Emergent layer is made up of few tall,

wide trees that are about 130 to 250 feet tall• Since these are the tallest trees, this layer gets

a lot of sun• There are a couple small monkeys that live

here, one being the spider monkey

Learn more about the spider monkey!

Emergent Layer

Spider Monkey

Check Yourself

• They are found in tropical rainforests from southern Mexico to Brazil

• These monkeys like to be in areas where they can find ripe fruits and insects to eat

• Their tails can measure up to 89 cm and become almost like a fifth hand

• Spider monkeys rarely fight, they will retreat in threatening situations

Page 7: We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest.

Answer

• Any insects and ripe fruit they can find

Spider monkeys live in the emergent layer because they can find fruit and insects to eat. The fruit need sun and rain to grow, so that’s why the monkeys can find it here.

Canopy

Learn more about the sloth!

• The canopy layer covers the rainforest• It is sometimes described as the “umbrella” of

the rainforest

• Many animals live in this area since food is abundant since this layer still gets a little sunlight and rain

• One animal is the sloth

Page 10: We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest.

The Sloth• Sloths eat leaves and bugs

which can be found in abundance in the canopy

• A sloth never has to drink water because they get water from the leaves they eat

• The sloth defends itself with its sharp claws, but its best defense is being able to be camouflage

• Sloths spend most of their lives upside down!

Camouflage

• The sloths camouflage helps to protect themselves against their predators

Understory

Learn about the hummingbird!

• Little sunshine reaches this area• The plants have to grow larger leaves to reach

the sunlight• There are a large concentration of insects• There are also a lot of birds that live in the

understory because there is a lot of room to fly around freely

• One bird in particular is the hummingbird

Page 14: We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest.

Hummingbird• The characteristic

distinguishing them from other birds is a gorget.

• The gorget is the bright, almost glowing color on the throats of the males

• At night a birds heart rate drops significantly, almost like hibernation

Forest Floor

• This is the darkest part of the rainforest• Since hardly any sun reaches this forest floor

things begin to decay quickly• Many of the largest rainforest animals are

found on the forest floor• The jaguar may be hard to find on the forest

floor, but they are there!

Learn more about the Jaguar!

Page 18: We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest.

Jaguar

• The second largest in the cat family

• Jaguars can grow up to 6 feet long and 3 feet tall

• They can weigh up to 300 pounds

• Their paws have a lot of padding which allow them to move around the forest floor quietly

• Jaguars usually hunt at night because they have great sight and can sneak up on their prey

Here’s a hint:

Back to question

Page 24: We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest.

1. What layer of the rainforest does this animal come from?

A. Canopy

B. Emergent

C. Forest Floor

D. Understory

Page 25: We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest.

Understory

Correct!

Next question

Hummingbirds like to fly up, down, left, right, backwards, forwards and even in loop-de-loops!

The understory has enough space for the hummingbird to fly around!

Page 26: We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest.

Try Again!Remember: This bird needs a lot of room to fly and move freely
