At KNAU, Arizona Public Radio, coverage is as complete as you are curious. Go beyond the
headlines with in-depth reporting you can rely on, so you know why things happen, not just that they
happened. We don’
t just ask questions...
we explore the answers.

Expanding KNAU’s ImportanceKNAU’s success in 2010 demonstrated how essential our news and information service is to our community. When Arizona politics became national news with the passage of the SB1070 immigration law, KNAU listeners heard defi nitive, balanced coverage of the controversy from Capitol correspondent Howard Fischer. As destructive weather pounded northern Arizona – a record snow storm, severe forest fi res, devastating fl oods, and unprecedented tornadoes – KNAU News broke into programming with vital emergency
information. NPR reporters brought breaking and thoughtful national and international news to KNAU listeners -- from the Gulf oil spill, the rise of the Tea Party, and passage of healthcare reform, to Haiti’s earthquake and the Mexican drug war.
At a time when newsrooms elsewhere are shrinking, KNAU increased its news resources by joining an innovative journalistic partnership with 6 southwestern public radio stations. Fronteras: The Changing America Desk produces reports about immigration and our region’s changing demographics, and listeners rewarded the station by fl ocking to KNAU in unprecedented numbers. Industry surveys identifi ed KNAU as the top-ranked radio station in northern Arizona during 2010.* More than 68,000 persons tune in weekly.
In fi scal year 2010, KNAU operated in a fi nancially responsible manner and ended the year with a surplus. This was deposited in a quasi-endowment fund with NAU as an investment in the future. Though business support fell by 8%, refl ecting the recession, KNAU listeners increased their support by 5%, compensating for a 10% reduction in NAU funding. KNAU will face new budget challenges in 2011 and 2012 as government takes a hard look at public funding. We are confi dent that KNAU will continue to be an essential source of information with strong community support.
Thank you for your continuing support of Arizona Public Radio,
Charles Smith and John Stark

The KNAU News Team has distinguished itself with these awards in broadcast journalism — a feat which sets us among the most accomplished in the country.
You might see his by-line regularly in the Arizona Daily Sun, his face on public TV pundit programs, and hear his voice on KNAU reporting on all things political in Arizona. Howard Fischer is a veteran journalist who has reported on state government since 1982.

Fischer is usually on the move. We’ve heard him covering committee meetings, debriefi ng KNAU reporters on controversial legislation such as SB1070 or the latest gun control legislation, and conducting interviews practically on the run through legislative parking lots. “He’s like the James Bond of newsmen,” according to KNAU News Director Daniel Kraker. “The hardest-working journalist in Phoenix. I can’t tell you how many times I get calls at nine o’clock at night from Howie, still nailing down some details for a morning story. I don’t think he’s taken a day off in years.”
Why does he do it? To Fischer, the Arizona political beat is the mother lode, rich in controversy and characters. “You can’t make this stuff up,” he adds. “I love covering Arizona politics.”

Fronteras: The Changing America Desk is helping KNAU listeners make sense of the dramatic cultural shifts shaping the desert
southwest. It’s a joint project of 7 public radio stations across the region. Reporters are based in Flagstaff, Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, San Diego, Las Cruces and San Antonio. Laurel Morales, longtime KNAU host and reporter, is now working as the Fronteras reporter based in Flagstaff. Fronteras: The Changing America Desk adds a regional perspective to KNAU’s award-winning national and local coverage. The goal is to provide listeners the information and context they need to navigate change and make decisions in our rapidly evolving region. Funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Dead or Alive: Arizona’s Ghost Towns. From rickety old mining towns to the crumbling ruins of ancient Indian pueblos, northern Arizona’s landscape is littered with ghost towns. Producer Diane Hope and NAU History Professor Michael Amundson transported KNAU listeners to abandoned ghost towns like Diablo Canyon and Howells, and to towns like Chloride and Jerome that have been reinvented by retirees and tourists. Along the way we met a “ghost town hunter,” an artist trying to bring an abandoned Navajo trading post back to life, and “The Wild Roses,” female gunfi ghters from Chloride, struggling to preserve this fragile slice of history before it disappears. Funded in part by the Arizona Humanities Council.
Inquiring Minds: Insights from Northern Arizona University. This new KNAU series aims to inform KNAU listeners about cutting edge scientifi c research at Northern Arizona University. It reveals and explains world-class discoveries and explorations at the region’s largest university. Longtime northern Arizona journalist Bonnie Stevens writes and records the two-minute segments, which air every Monday at 6:30 and 8:30 a.m., and again at 3:30 p.m. Learn about research into mirror neurons that could actually make people nicer, volcanoes that may one day generate Flagstaff’s electricity, and the world’s only major religion that is now extinct.

KNAU’s spring 2010 pledge drive goal was to raise funds for the station and provide 105,000 meals for families throughout northern Arizona. The “Feed Your Mind, Feed a Family” campaign works with St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. Four anonymous partners and Sunwest Bank pledged to donate a specifi ed dollar amount which matched a pledge to KNAU. Thanks to the generous support of our listeners, the partnership was a huge success, feeding families across northern Arizona.
Feed Your Mind, Feed a Family
Jokes were told, the news from Lake Woebegone shared, and Garrison led the audience in a sing-along as he walked through the amphitheater. The Flagstaff performance of A Prairie Home Companion’s 2010 Summer Love tour was a huge success. Garrison Keillor, Sara Watkins, Fred Newman, and the band all referred to the Flagstaff show as “a bright spot” on their 25 city tour. Thanks to Lowell Observatory and Pine Mountain Ampitheater for sponsoring and co-producing this sold-out show.
A Prairie Home Companion comes to Flagstaff
