Copy sorting mats and picture cards (you choose whether you use the cards with or without words) on cardstock and laminate. You can make a set for each child at the center, or allow
children to share and work together to sort the cards.
Children will place sorting mats in front of them, then determine whether each picture card has along vowel sound or short vowel sound. When all cards are sorted, they can write the words under the correct heading on their recording page. Since I teach kindergarten, I put the words on the cards since we’re not *super* familiar with long vowel spelling patterns yet. If you teach a higher grade or want to give your kids a
challenge, you can use the cards with no words.
