Last month the Johannesburg Metro Police Department K9 were informed about a drug

laboratory at the Central Western Jabavu (CWJ) by the community members. The owner of the house is not yet known and the JMPD spokes-person, Wayne Minnaar, received a tip off from the community. The law enforcement and police found chemi-cals, machines and equipment used to make mandrax. The case has been handed over to the Hawks and they are currently investigating the case.

Gauteng News spoke to the spokesper-son of Hawks, Ndivhuwo Mulamu,

“we are still investigating the case, so far there are no developments.

This is a serious offence and we ask the community to work with the SAPS and contact the nearest police station should they have information with regards to the case” he said.

Law enforcement did not disclose how much the drugs are worth. Community members are urged to cooperate and assist in apprehending the owner of the house and help bring justice. Should anyone have information, they can call the South African Police Services emergency line 08600 10111.

Tensions are high at Pennyville Flats, New Canada, Soweto as Black residents from the flats

are fighting with Noordgesig Coloured residents. The fight broke out on 15th September when a group of community members attacked and killed two men from Noordgesig, the attacks took place at Pennyville Flats Phase 4 and there were fights against the Coloured community.Residents of Pennyville Flats were frightened for their lives as a group of Coloureds came to attack them after two Coloured men were killed by some community members of Pennyville. Eight people from Pennyville were arrested during the strike and violence that took place between the two communities, and their next court appearance was on 9th October at the Orlando Magistrate Court.

Gauteng News spoke to Sthembile Takalo community member from Pennyvile, “This started when some Coloured boys came to Pennyvile to rob us and the last time they attempted to steal, the community responded with anger and they were fed up about the robbing taking place in our community. It is sad that most people who got injured are innocent people and this whole situation has gone out of control. Tomorrow we will be supporting our comrades at Orlando Magistrate court and we hope this will come to an end.”

The Community Policing Forum of Sector 2 in Soweto has laid four complains to Brigadier

Governsamy, former Station Command-er of Moroka Police Station against corruption in the sector, however, the sector two management received only one response from the station com-mander with no results or solutions provided. The Sector 2 crime forum expressed their concerns about the patrollers’ coordinator Judith Phiri also well known as Sehlobo who is said to be using intimidation and threats against the patrollers of Sector 2. The Sector 2 management reported their concerns about the legitimacy of Sehlobo and they received response from the former station commander confirming Sehlobo to be not involved in the patrollers’ coordinator nor the community policing forum.

“Judith Phiri is not a member of our committee nor does she have authorisa-tion to be heading the patrolling coordi-nators. Former station commander Brigadier Governsamy con-firmed with us that Sehlobo is not part of the Sector 2 committee and she doesn’t have the power to be recruiting patrollers. We want justice because the people who are supposed to be electing the patrollers are the Section 2 manage-ment but ever since this woman is in the picture, things are not done according to the process. Our Sector Chairperson Mr Moses Sishi is always harassed by Sehlobo’s marshal coordinators whom we also do not recognize in our sector,” said Pinky Khubeka Block Chairperson of Enkanyezi Sector 2.The Department of Community Safety and Department of Education have a formal agreement confirming that the patrollers who will be working in schools must be paid a certain stipend every month. However, Sector 2 management complained about patrol-lers hired by the Sector 2 committee not being fully paid and they didn’t receive winter uniforms as they should. Gaut-eng News attempted to receive a comment from Department of Commu-nity Safety and Department of Educa-tion but we were unable to reach both parties.

Moroka Police Station has a new Station Commander who begun to fill the position on Wednesday but when our journalists attempted to reach him, they were told the station is a attending a meeting. The CPF Sector 2 managers are angered by the corruption and maladministration that is taking place at the Moroka Police station, and they demand Judith “Sehlobo” Phiri to be brought to book as she is not supposed to be acting as a patrolling coordinator and having an influence at the Moroka Police station.

Eight people to appear in Orlando Magistrate court

Moroka Police station caught in

corruption allegations

Police arrested two suspects between the ages of 28 and 36 for attempted business robbery,

possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition at about 19:30 last Sun-day.

Three suspects allegedly attempted to rob a supermarket on corner Mooi and Albertina Sisulu streets when the shop was about to close. A general worker had stepped outside to close the roller door when he was accosted by a gunman who pointed a pistol at him.“The suspect forced him inside the shop and was later joined by two of his accomplices. The two suspects had firearms and demanded money from the workers. The victim’s brother was able to scream for help which then forced the robbers to flee the scene”,

says Captain Xoli Mbele.

Community members who witnessed the ordeal came to the workers’ rescue and managed to apprehend one suspect after assaulting him. The second suspect was arrested by police after they gave chase. Two firearms with live ammunition were recovered. They will appear soon in the Johan-nesburg Magistrate Court. Johannes-burg District Commander Major General Masha is appealing to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

Places inhabited by troubled or des-perate people often double as a ha-ven for creativity. Musicians and

comedians have documented how their craft was shaped by difficult circum-stances that existed earlier in their lives. The art of expression exists in many forms and fashion is one of them. Established in 2018 fashion label Home-grown Shandis is growing at a rate their counterparts would only anticipate in a few years. Comprised of a large number of members each individual brings their unique talent to the table and a fashion statement is madeI had the opportunity of interviewing co-founder Sicelo Mabuza who explained the concept behind Homegrown Shandis.

“We are not fashion designers but prefer being called creatives”, he begins. The interview takes place in their booth at a flea market in Newtown occupied by oth-er businesses.

Positioned between 2 entrances, Sicelo says the move was done strategically in order to attract customers entering and exiting the market.

His journey as a creative started in high school when he left home as a teenager. It

was only natural for his hustle instincts to kick in considering the circumstances.

Self-taught in graphic design, photogra-phy and taking videos – it was only a matter of time before their fashion label would be born.

He continues,” Homegrown Shandis ca-ters for people’s needs. We interact with our customers and get the sense of the kind of products they need.”

This can be seen in their choice of mate-rial used. An old fabric that might be fa-miliar to township dwellers, known as ‘Itshali’ in IsiZulu or a traditional blan-ket, is used to make sneakers and scarves. If this doesn’t blow your mind maybe their customised wrist watches with the faces of their intended customers will.

The main inspiration behind these prod-ucts is to preserve that homely feeling one gets when surrounded by family. “It-shali can be used as a door mat or for warmth, in some instances, but we see it as an African treasure that needs to be cherished,” Sicelo explains. The team has had the chance of being in-terviewed on various media platforms and being noticed by prominent figures

such as radio DJ T-bo Touch.

Their sneakers ‘Mama Kea’ are in demand in England while their other products are causing havoc in China.

Clearly, anything is pos-sible when you consider yourself a disruptor of the conventional method of doing things. What’s better than disrupting the market with a Shan-dis that is Home-grown.Gcwalah!!!

In August, Gauteng News reported on 67 nurses that have to be reinstated by the Gauteng Department of Social Develop-

ment, however, the department failed to comply with the judgement handed down by Commissioner Thabe Phalane on 23rd November 2018. The nurses who were unfairly dismissed by the Social Develop-ment department applied for their case on 28th September 2018 and the reason for lateness is, the nurses submitted their dismissal after they had consulted with an attorney on different occasions. The applicants signed referral forms but unfortunately some of their names are not on the list of original applicants.According to the judgement, the applicants submitted that they were appointed as Enrolled Nursing Assistants at various centres around Gauteng. However, nurses were dismissed on 30 December 2016 when they were informed by the department that their contracts have been expired.Gauteng News spoke to Advocate Mirriam Bareki representing the enrolled nursing assistants, “The Department of Social Development was given 30 days to respond to the judgement handed over by Commis-sioner Thabe Phalane to reinstate the 67 nurses who were unfairly dismissed. However, as we speak, 30 days has passed and the department has not acted upon the judgement. This court case has been proceeding for about 3 years now without

any solution and the unfairly dismissed nurses are still unemployed and it’s very difficult for them to survive at this point.” The applicants had expectations that they would receive permanent jobs from the department as they kept on renewing their contracts but the nurses received a surprise from the department informing them that in the next few days their contract would expire. The judgement elaborates that the dispute conspired on 30th December 2016, how-ever, applicants lodged their application on 28th September 2018. According to the judgment, the department’s Senior Advo-cate Gareth Huley raised a preliminary issue that there is a list attached to the applicants’ affidavit which contains four other names. Two names have their signatures attached and two others have not attached their signatures.“We are very frustrated and there’s no way forward for this matter. A former colleague who was part of the 67 nurses was absorbed by the department and the remaining 66 remains jobless, we were supposed to receive responce from the department but till today there’s no feedback. The depart-ment was given a period of time to give us our jobs back but now they made excuses that some applicants on the list had hand-written and not typed their names. I am 48 years old and unemployed, who is going to hire me at my age. I have children who are

supposed to go to varsity now they stay at home due to the fact that I am unable to send them to school. Various interviews were conducted by the department but we were never called for that, instead the department hired people from outside who were carrying brown envelopes at 10 pm to attend interviews”, said Lindiwe Motsepe who is one of the 66 nurses who were unfairly dismissed.

Gauteng News attempted to reach out the Gauteng Department of Social Develop-ment and the Nursing Council South Africa but we were unable to get a comment.

The daily events that occur in life can inspire artistically inclined individuals to tap into their

subconscious mind and create master-pieces. Pablo Picasso did it with his complex paintings and William Shake-speare managed to do it with the mere stroke of a pen. That kind of talent, however, is not only reserved for international artists. Gauteng News sat down with a promis-ing painter from Vosloorus, in his art gallery in the heart of Johannesburg, to find out more about his craft.Simphiwe Mlangeni, originally from Soweto, became fascinated with paint-ing and drawing from an early age when

he was exposed to it through his father. For him painting is a kind of release that is inspired by people’s experiences as well as their character. “My art is inspired by life in general. I’m inspired by what troubles people and what makes them happy”, he says. A powerful painting hung on the wall depicting a tap next to a tree in a rural setting catches my eye and I enquire about it. Simphiwe explains that both elements are metaphorical and play an important role in life. The tap represents his grandmother, who played a vital role in his upbringing, while the tree repre-sents him as a child. A tree requires water for it to grow and

sustain itself. His grandmother ensured that he was provided with everything a child needs until he developed into a fully-fledged individual.“Art is everywhere and even architec-ture can be considered as art because buildings are drawn on paper and planned out properly before they are built”, he continues. Simphiwe’s passion for art is apparent in his voice as he projects his philosophy through the painting of his pictures. The idea is to share this art with every person he can reach and teach which explains his voluntary work in different communities. Although challenges of disseminating his artwork are present,

he does not despair but vows to contin-ue doing what he does best. “I’d like my work to be preserved as a stone tablet because art comes from ancient stones and drawings. Everything that I do now is basically ancient because it has already been done”, he concludes.

The SABC has finally received a lifeline from government in the form of R3,2 billion but the

bailout comes with strict conditions. Minister of Communications and digital technologies, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams held a media briefing on Friday to explain the preconditions that were imposed on the public broadcaster. “The Department of Communications (DoC) has assisted SABC to obtain the requisite funding allocation, through submitting required motivations to National Treasury, and enlisting the services of the Government Technical Advisory centre to help bolster its turnaround plan”, said Ndabeni-Abra-hams.The minister further stated that the two departments have worked together to facilitate the initial tranche of the R3,2 billion allocation to be transferred to the SABC. R2,1 billion was transferred to the public broadcaster on Monday, 07 October 2019. The remaining balance

of R1,1 billion will be transferred once the SABC fully meets the remaining three outstanding conditions or firmly demonstrates evidence to fully comply.

Firstly the SABC is required to provide an update of how the entity is dealing with the people implicated in the investigation report. They need to further develop a turnaround plan that incorporates measures to prevent the reoccurrence of the identified factors. Most importantly the public broadcaster needs to conduct a thorough investiga-tion into what caused their financial collapse and why previous turnaround plans have failed to be successfully implemented.

In closing Ndabeni-Abrahams said that the SABC would need more than the allocated R3,2 billion but acknowl-edged that the public broadcaster has a mammoth task regarding the required turnaround plans.

A grade nine learner was alleg-edly stabbed to death on Monday morning during their

normal interval in-between periods. The 14-year-old pupil, whose identity has been withheld, was stabbed with a pair of scissors by a fellow classmate while awaiting their teacher’s arrival. At this stage it is still unclear as to what might have sparked the scuffle and the police have confirmed that an investiga-tion is currently under way. Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi announced the tragic news on Twitter

and that he and his team would be heading out to the school.

‘A learner at Thuto Tiro Secondary school in Sebokeng was fatally stabbed inside the classroom moments ago. Together with our team we are on our way to the scene’, he tweeted.

SAPS Captain Fikile Funda elaborated during a press briefing on what had transpired and the necessary steps that would be taken. “This morning at about 10:20 we received a complaint from Thuto Tiro Secondary and we dis-patched our members to the school. The

suspect was arrested in the presence of his parents and is currently detained while we investigate a case of murder”, he said.District Director Victor Thetha was also present, alongside Principal Jeff Khum-alo, and stated that the grade nine learner was declared dead on the scene when paramedics arrived.

The deceased learner’s parents have been attended to and fellow classmates affected by the incident will be given psycho-social services by the school.

The Gauteng Department of Education has issued offers of placement to 102 971 applicants

for the 2020 online admissions. Of these, about 15 919 applicants have successfully accepted their offers of placement by logging on to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za Parents who have not yet received offers of place-ment are reminded that offers are not sent to all parents on the same day, as the Department is processing offers systematically in line with the order of

application options outlined in the Admissions Regulations. Parents who do not have access the internet may visit the school or district office where they will be assisted. “An appeal is made to parents to remain calm if they have not yet received offers of place-ment as this process will conclude on 31 October 2019. Parents who have already received offers of placement must accept these within 7 days of receiving the SMS for the placement offer. Finally, it is important to remem-

ber that the capacity of each school will determine the number of applicants that receive placement offers and the number of learners ultimately admitted to the school”, said MEC Panyaza Lesufi. For more information, contact the Gauteng Department of Education’s Spokesperson, Steve Mabona on 072 574 3860.

MUSICNASTY C

THIRTEEN CENTS

The coolest kid in the block Nasty C dropped the hottest single “God Flows” (featur-

ing Durban rapper Crowned Yung) is making huge waves. As rapper Nasty C dropped the single in the middle of his music tour, Ivyson Tour. Nasty C shows off with his bass heavy instrumental and glitter cushions but fans love his lyrics as he flexes and sets the bar high for young rappers in South Africa. His next Ivyson Tour will be in Pretoria on 18th October. .

Azure is a 12-year-old orphan forced to fend for himself in the streets of Cape Town

following the death of his parents. He is led into a life of prostitution under feared gangster pimp Allen. A black boy with distinct blue eyes Azure is ironically the envy of his elders who abuse him endlessly. The story sees Azure being taken advantage of by adults around him who make him believe that it is only to make him stronger. The money he makes from prostituting himself to gay men needs to be scrutinized first by his pimp, Allen, before he can use it.He suffers a setback when a trusted ‘Auntie’ Joyce, who’s been helping him with depositing his money into a bank account meant for savings, subsequently disappears with it.

This is an interesting movie to watch as we see Nicholas, an Afrikaner young man who

was part of the soldiers whom went to defend themselves at the Angolan border. During those times young white men over the age of 16 were forced to join the military service but Nicholas always knew he was different and that made him feel shameful and unacceptable. During the conflict Nicholas finds himself falling in love with another man but both men find themselves in a very dangerous and tricky situation. Directed and written by Oliver Hermanus.

Created 19 years ago, the Holy Life Family strives to spread the good word of God through

music. Founded by Reverend Abia Mophethe in 2000 from the East Rand, the gospel choir spreads messages of hope, love and peace. The seven-member choir is known to be hosting numerous events across South Africa and they believe they have a responsibility to reach out to underprivi-leged people; they have recently gone to Mozambique to assist people in need by

supporting them financially. The gospel group is known for reaching out to the needy and assisting communi-ties that might seek financial help. They have had the privilege to travel to Israel to perform in revivals and conferences. “For us, being part of this group is truly a blessing from the Lord. Holy Life Family is a group that started at church (Holy Life Ministries International), under the leadership of Reverend A. Mophethe. We are actually not just a group that sings, but we are actually all

full time preachers of the Word. We travel throughout South Africa with Rev Mophethe preaching in tents and ministries, sharing the saving, undiluted gospel of Jesus Christ. Wherever we go we correct, warn and open the eyes of our people from being deceived by false prophets and from being scammed by fake pastors” said Pastor Isaac Pule who is the member of the gospel group.Holy Life Family plans to travel in a cruise ship trip that is being planned and organised by their church, Holy Life

Ministries International. On 19th of October the choir will be having a night of worship at Holy Life Ministries International and they will be travelling to Harrismith, Free State in October, and Lusikisiki in the Easter Cape in November, to positively impact lives.

Kwanele Kenneth

Kwanele Kenneth Tshabalala is a young entrepreneur who decided to take it upon his

hands to empower budding entrepre-neurs in Soweto with his network - Soweto Business Network. Soweto Business Network is a social media movement that is aimed at providing ample visibility to small businesses through its large following, and entre-preneurial mentorship.

When did you establish Soweto Busi-ness Network? I established Soweto Business Network in November 2014.What inspired the establishment of the network? There were no cost effective platforms I could use to market my then home improvement business in and around Soweto, so i decided to start Soweto Business Network, only to find out there were plenty entrepreneurs who needed that service.Did you study anything entrepreneurial related?I did a business management course at

Emndeni Skills Development Centre-and Entrepreneurship Training at Awethu Project where I acquired skills required to establish a business and mentor other entrepreneurs. What challenges are you facing as a young black entrepreneur? Access to funding is one of our chal-lenges, however, we are doing our best to grow the movement despite the challenges. How important is mentorship to you in business? Mentorship is very important; hence we invite experienced mentors to our monthly Soweto Game Changers Networking Sessions, so that Entrepre-neurs can connect with them and learn. Our next event will be on 11th October from 09:30 to 12:00 at Morris Isaacson Centre for Music in Soweto , themed ‘Financial Wellness’ and entry is free. Do you have any employees, if yes, how many people do you employ?Yes, we have 3 employees.Do you feel enough is being done to empower young people who want to pursue entrepreneurship? If not, what

do you feel is lacking? The government is making a great effort to empower young entrepreneur, however, we need more Incubation Hubs in the townships to ensure that entrepreneurs are knowledge and skills ready to establish businesses that will be profitable and create employment opportunities. What are your highlights since you established SBN? My greatest highlight is seeing our mentees thrive as a result of the impact we’ve had in their businesses and lot of them have invited us to their businesses to witness their growth. That makes us realise that there’s room for what we do.What else can we look forward to on Soweto Business Network? We have recently acquired sponsors to launch our very own awards to ac-knowledged and celebrate the hard work of Sowetan entrepreneurs, organi-sations and groups that are making a difference in our community.

The Springboks have been per-forming very well at the Rugby World Cup lately but allegations

of racism are tarnishing their image. Lock Eben Etzebeth was accused of assaulting two men in Langebaan, Cape Town, and using a racial slur during a confrontation. The incident occurred before the Rugby World Cup began and shocked many supporters when Etzebeth was selected as one of the players who would be participating in the tournament.

Nigel Samuels, lawyer of the two men, stated that the National Prosecuting Authority was still undecided on whether to file charges or not. The two men are demanding R1 million from Etzebeth who is facing a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The South African Human Rights Commission lodged a complaint, last Friday, with the Equality Court. SA Rugby has also told the media that an internal investigation would be under-

way.Last week the Springbok’s triumph over Italy was marred by what appeared to be racism. A group of white players huddled together, in celebration, after the match and snubbed Makazole Mapimpi when he tried to join in.

Their victory secured them a spot in the quarter finals.
