Definition of the word [jēn-yəs]

A GENIUS to most is someone who is mentally bright, to the dictionary it is someone or something with an exceptionally intellectual ability. To the JSNL team a genius is one who takes what they have and utilizes it to utmost of its ability. For instance J. Smith, the Founder/ designer ex-plains “to me anyone or thing that takes a situation and makes it work for them is a genius in my eyes.” “Each design or garment reflects an interpretation of some form of genius whether it be a person or culture and its surroundings.” Despite the over populated market of new clothing lines, JSNL’s mission is to stand out from the rest by delivering a positive yet classic apparel that will be recog-nized for its subtle but clever design. Now a days it is so hard to ei-ther find a job or to hold on to one

for that matter. In addition to worldly situations, It is hard to not be taken in by our surroundings. From watching from the driver’s seat JSNL has found a way to voice socially political issues, on a medium that has been getting ever so more popular and accepted in more places. That medium is the tee shirt. Designing tee shirts accord-ing to J. Smith “[is what] bridges the gap between reality and my overly active ideas. “ I’m constantly thinking, maybe a little too much when I really shouldn’t” says Jesse. As he explains how everything came about. Just saying the name can be a mouthful but in short it means cre-ativity. Just the short period of time that I have been around the whole JSNL family has been, an experi-ence. Imagine challenging your way of thinking. Everything you thought

“You’re a genius!!!!”

, “Way to go genius “

[sarcastically” You may

have heard these before

but have you heard of

was edgy or fresh is cool, but not on their way of thinking. Take what you think, flip it, reverse it and then throw it forward as hard as you can. Confusing right? Well that’s how it is explaining JSNL. I think it is the uncalculated preciseness that intrigues me as well as others to this brand. Anyone who has learned about a genius or knows about any, knows that you can’t understand them but you can understand their doing. With this brand I can truly say the same. One thing that Jesse said to me, when I first sat down with him was that they were not creating just “clothes”, we are creating an experience. “Something that each and everyone can take with them, whether it be a memorable moment, a laugh, something to talk about or something they heard at a photo shoot or event” he said. “The clothes compliment the overall experience”. Ultimately there are plans to expand the brand into every element of a lifestyle brand. “Every sense will be tapped into, from fragrances and co-lognes to audio and visual extensions from the brand.” Music seems to be a com-mon motivation amongst the JSNL family so it is only right to dive into this mar-ket as well as video show-cases. Majority of the mod-els either sing or act, but I guess that’s what makes this family so creative. Ev-eryone naturally takes to each other and feeds off of each others creativity. You know I had to ask about the taste sense right being the food type but, no defi-nite product came to light , just references to various ideas. I asked Jesse about him revealing his plans for various ventures and he loosely quoted Vince Lom-bardi when he said “I can give my competition my playbook and they still couldn’t beat me” so in other words you know your stuff. “Yeah basically”. “Many think that we just started thinking about a clothing

line, [ha] nah this has been thought of and cultivated since high school days. There will always be some-one out there that either tries to duplicate or thinks that they can do better, but no one can take the un-derlining intention of the brand and raise it like us. It takes a lot of patience and determination to really achieve what one wants. The closer you or anyone gets to their dream, the more obstacles will become present to “test” and see how just how bad you really want what you want. Along the path I feel like we made “beautiful” mistakes.... [Ha] yeah I said “beauti-ful” mistakes, because at the time they seemed right without thinking but looking back they made us stronger. No one wants to lose money Lord knows we don’t but that is a monetary lesson that put us in a position to fully appreciate what we have now and what we could potentially be or make. To anyone with a passion to do anything, pur-sue it to the fullest, only let you be the judge as to

whether it can be done or not. The same person, telling you that it can’t be done is the same person in the same spot as before doing noth-ing new. “Its one thing when your family and friends believe in you, its another when others believe in you, but when you believe in your-self ..now that’s dangerous, only you can limit yourself.” My father always told me to reach for stars well I’m going to add to that and tell you reach for the stars, anything under

that use as a stepping stone. Believe and Achieve! Anyone can be a [jēn-yəs], there is no particular mold for that. Honestly the definition lies within you. You determine whether you and what you do stands out or if you are with the masses trying to find an identity. “You’ll soon understand, but subtle is the new loud” you don’t have to yell to be heard or be all flashy to be seen...Let that marinate [ha] as he stands up and walks out. The definition ... Do you define a [jēn-yəs]?

„Its one thing when your family and friends believe in you, its an-

other when others be-lieve in you, but when you believe in yourself

..now that’s dangerous,”

Show TimeMarch 4th

Garment District in Washington D.C. , JSNL , other great featured designers under one roof. Inspiration, motivation, lessons, and a night to remember .

n March 4th, 2011, the Howard University School of Law, Intellectual Property Students’ Association hosted their very first Intelligent Design fashion show. This was the main event to conclude their Fashion law week, which combined the interest of fashion and law, into one idea of success. Held at the Garment District in Washington DC, JSNL was in attendance as their cleverly designed T-shirts were showcased and introduced to some of DC’s most fashionable minds.

Page 15: WE ARE JSNL

Most fashion enthusiast or designers draw inspiration from things seen, or eras in time

that have sparked creativity. In the garment district of DC designers are in a haven of inspiration from the artistic vision of the streets, the gritty glamour of architecture that looks like it should be condemned by the outside but contains some of the areas most classy establishments seen. In the Garment district on the corner of 1005 7th Street

NW, this building is a perfect example of rough beauty. With exposed bricks, the wooden

planks where the ceiling should be and what looks like construction flood lights providing light, the phrase don’t judge a book by its cover definitely came into effect as the Committee members, designers, hair and makeup artists, models and dj prepared the stage for one of the nights most creative events. As in the stages of renovation the IPSA (intellectual property students Association) fashion show took advantage of this jewel and packed the house with close to 200 to 250 + people. “I think that the atmosphere was very appropriate, as an artist at heart I can appreciate such energy from the audience, the inspirational look of the venue [yeah its crazy right] and truthfully the feedback from the whole event.” J. Smith the founder and head designer explained.

What made you get into fashion ?I was an observer; you have talkers, you actors, and observers. I would watch how people based their whole lifestyle or mood around how they dressed. I wasn’t really a talker so I let things like art speak for me. I realized the power of expression by using shirts as a medium and there you go [ha]. What experiences have you learned from working and pursuing your pas-sion?I can say that I have learned a lot, as one would hope so, [ha] but I learned a lot from making some major mistakes to learning a lot just from talking with individuals both consumers and industry veterans. I can recall having a conversation with someone who was familiar with the industry and everything they said sounded like a completely different language to me. [You know how when

someone is talking to you but you just act like you know what they are talking about ha yeah that was me] At the time I was a little frustrated but after realizing what they did for me I can appreciate their professionalism and approach. Long story short they made me step my game up. I probably should have asked questions but knowing myself I knew that it would force me to go find out just exactly what they were talking about. What made you come up with the name?Well I originally wanted to incorporate my initials JLS into the name but had no clue as to where to start. I asked a good friend and young woman whom I dub the “Oracle” for any suggestions for words that start with those letters and she came back the next day with a paper filled with words

“The beautiful struggle..

from 0-100 mph ”

Page 23: WE ARE JSNL

for each letter. After studying the paper Scholars and limitations stood out so I went with those. The added [of] No came a couple hours later and the phonetic breakdown of genius came later that night. At the time I was doing shirts but the designs that I had printed were not like other shirts they were different. Some said they were bland, some said cheesy, but a lot said that they were clever and ge-nius. I wanted to continue to educate and cleverly promote positivity in my designs so [jēn-yəs] Schol-ars [of] No Limitations felt only right for the name. What does it mean?[jēn-yəs] Scholars [of] No Limitations means that as a culture that promotes individuality there are no limitations to originality. Nowadays being eclectic is accepted make that person a genius in their own

sense. Scholars can be defined as people with a profound knowledge in a particular subject and this subject just so happens to be expression and cre-ativity. Everything from the ads, to the garment, to the photo shoots are well thought out and based around the meaning and vision of the brand. What we as JSNL mean. What is next for the brand? I personally want to focus on the actual fabrica-tion of our future garments, messing with different textures incorporating more maturity into the line and continue to express the meaning of the brand through the clothes. Outside of that we plan on expanding the brand into various joint ventures with skateboards, accessories, and a couple more ventures down the pipeline but and overall growth

Page 24: WE ARE JSNL

IT WAS ALL A

DREAMOR SO IT

SEEMED !

It was all a dream, or so it seemed. The way that everything fell into place, the right connections, the

right people being introduced and relationships being built, or fate? Some would blame it on timing but every so often something emerges that something even the most critical of haters had to respect. That presence emerging is JSNL. Some have never heard of the company, some very faint like a whisper in the wind but some that’s all it was just a dream.

Notice I said was meaning past tense. Dreams don’t cultivate an idea into something that even seasoned veterans

in the industry have to step back and applaud, No Ambition does. Anyone who has stuck around with the company has undeniably seen the growth and ambition of this company strive from hand painted shirts to mass produced garments bearing the company logo and designer tags. There are a million and one t-shirt companies especially in Virginia, I’m exaggerating of course but it seems that way that everyone has a dream to slap some graphics on a t-shirt and say that they are a clothing line. It takes a lot to be a clothing line, honestly some of which I think JSNL is still learning, but they are taking what was once a dream and turning it into a reality. Was is no longer, dream scratched out marked with a line through

it. This is real! This isn’t mediocre, and from being around the team its more than what most believe. Some say they are the “George Jefferson’s” of the neighborhood but nah they don’t even carry it like that.

Its not about the money, its not about the power, as the generational gap gets larger and larger its about a refreshing sense

of class and education that any generation could appreciate. J. Smith the COO did mention as we sat that he had a dream showing him how he could educate the younger generations in a way that wasn’t insulting but would stick to them. “ Some of our dreams are mere thoughts or fantasies, but I do think that at some point it’s a subconscious message, saying hey!! Pay attention do this, say that etc.” Faith and Ambition are the ingredients and anything sought after is achievable. Nothing is a tall order if you remember that says Smith. “

One thing I can say is that deciphering from a dream and something meant for you to remember is very hard. Don’t quote me but we all

have over “x” amount of dreams per night but those that

are reoccurring have a true meaning. We’ve all had some wacky dreams but try writing some dreams down if you remember and put the dots together, sometimes

there is a picture that comes out at the end. Pay attention deep down we all have secret ambitions that either have not emerged or are fantasies that we would really like to see happen. Some just dream while others live their dreams..... Which are YOU?

Some just dream while others live theirs!

Faith and Ambition are the ingredients for success!!!

Rebele[jen-y s]True comparison be-

tween the life two com-

pletely different worlds.

Both genius respectfully

in their own sense but

rebels to society

BY Leff Lane

IMAGES BY J. Smith

In an article titled Genius: the Right mix of Rebel, from the psychology today website (www.phsychologytoday.com/blog) Ilana Simmons, Ph. D., Compares a genius with rebel. In which she de-scribes how the most rebellious minds don’t necessarily have to be violent. Two examples that bring the rebel genius to light are photographers and skate board-ers. Truly an uncommon duo but true to the sense, most photographers and skateboarders seek to step outside of the box and tap into original thinking to get the most out of their brilliance.

Similarities to the lives of a skateboarders and photographers, are that they must get in and out to get those perfect shots. Security constantly trying to stop creativ-ity, random people looking on; scared to express their fascination but cant stop starring, and authorities continuing to group these individuals into confined sections amongst themselves to express themselves than out in the public.

For skateboarders pulling those complex tricks off is a form of art. Kick flips, verts,

and nose grinds is how they communi-cate, using whatever the surroundings provide to capture that perfect trick.

For photographers their form of art is us-ing an image to express their creativity. Some photographers use landscape, some use products, while some use sub-jects like models or animals. For some, getting that perfect shot requires going beyond the barriers, where security may not allow. Restricted areas seem to have the most fascinating shot but isn’t always the safest.

Both photographers and skateboarders are challenged with risking their safety and an encounter with those who don’t understand their creativity. Rebellious in nature both the avid photographer and skateboarder are forced to go above and beyond restrictions to display their genius. No limitations when it comes to creativity. With that being said the good folks at JSNL have decided to introduce a line of skateboards to commemorate the rebellious genius of no limitations.

P eople say if you read a book, and use your imagination, you can go any-where in this world that you want to go; but if you open up your ears

and your heart, the trip will be that much greater. Music has literally brought people together and taught us about different cultures from around the world. Some citizens of the United States are un-able to speak English fluently, but often use music as a tool to broaden their vocabulary. You can tell a lot about a person by the music they choose to listen to. I believe it shows your true interior no matter what the exterior looks like. When you hear a song and it takes you back to a certain place and time, only then do you realize how powerful music is.

In today’s era mu-sic is more important than it ever was. Young people are so influenced by what they hear on songs and records. It’s so prevalent to put positive messages in your songs and speak about real life situa-tions because you never know how it may affect someone’s life. Music is also used as a sort of therapy. Certain songs allow your mind to be set free and embark on a journey to wherever the mel-ody and lyrics take you. Others allow their feelings to pour out into a musical instrument making the

listener feel and hear what the artist is saying with-out verbally relaying the message. Music opens up the door to another area which is fashion. Fashion is a tangible song. A particular piece of clothing can trigger a door to re-open from your memory bank, but yet doesn’t a powerful song do the same thing?

Music and fashion will never die out. They constantly re-invent themselves with a mar-riage that’s unbreakable. From the beat of a drum

to the logo on a shirt, it symbolizes something more than you could ever imagine. With

all of the clothing lines that have been established within the past

5 years, most of them have been directly music driven. Having their own clothing line is some-thing most successful record-ing artist want to develop. I think the time is now for a group of young entrepreneurs

to embark on their journey and show the world exactly what

they have in store for it. What if I told you that this is only the begin-

ning? I encourage you to come walk and be a part of our vision that is JSNL. If

you had one message to deliver to the world, what better way to do it than in a song? In our case what better way than a magazine. – JSNL

One thing that makes the winning team is more than the level of success but what comes from the cooperation and impact that the team takes from their work. This team from the outside looks like it’s all fun and games with some of their recent events but there is much more substance than meets the eye.
