1. House callWhat happened: The sale of

the Wiant House closed andrepairs to the interior andexterior began in May.

Being a retailer is an amazing thing this time of year. One of the things that amazes me the most is how few people say“Merry Christmas” when they leave or enter our store. It’s always “Happy Holidays”, which is not a bad thing in and of itself, but here is our take.

“Christmas” What is it? The celebration of the birth of “The Christ”. Jesus was born so that man may live.

Who celebrates it? About 90% of Americans in some form.

When do they celebrate it - all agree December 25th.

How do we celebrate it? Many ways, not the least of which is exchanging gifts to the tune of about 200 billion dollars.

So what’s my point? Should we call Columbus day, “founders day”, should we call Martin Luther King day, “civil rights day”, that would be a dis-grace to both of these great men. Yet, the greatest man of all, God in the flesh, has had His name largely pulled from mainstream America on theday we honor him. This in and of itself is travesty enough. But what is really worse is the rest of the holiday has not changed. Millions are willingto ‘cash in on it’, but millions (most meaning no harm) have pulled His name from the occasion andreplaced it with “winter” and “happy”.

Not at Costello’s. MERRY CHRISTMAS! And to our Jewish friends, Happy Hanukkah.

Lastly, to every soldier who is serving right now to give me the freedom to worship God,run my business in a free enterprise zone, and raise my family in freedom…THANK YOU, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD KEEP YOU!

WEST CHICAGO – Therewill be two contested racesfor West Chicago City Councilafter the filing period closedMonday for the April 2015consolidated general election,according to information pro-vided by City Clerk NancySmith.

They will be in Wards 4and 7. In Ward 4, incumbentMelissa Birch, who was ap-pointed to the council earli-er this month, is running fora full term against WayneWoodward.

In Ward 7, Noreen Ligi-no-Kubinski and NicholasDzierzanowski will face off.Incumbent Matt Fuesting didnot file for re-election.

Incumbents James Beifuss,Alton Hallett, Kurt Meissner,Rebecca Stout and Mark Ed-walds are all running unop-posed in Wards 1, 3, 5, 6 and 6,

Gallery 200 artist namedPeople’s Choice for banner project

WEST CHICAGO – WestChicago residents have casttheir vote for the People’sChoice Award in the 2014 Com-munity Banner Art Project.

The winning entry, “Go-ing For It (Cycle Moon),” wascreated by Jennifer Ralph, anElgin artist who operates FirstStar Art Studio.

The 2014 project had atheme of “The (Bi)Cycle ofLife” and focused on the in-troduction and evolution ofcycling. Ralph said she’s hon-ored by the recognition.

“I was surprised because Ithought the entirety of all theentries was so good,” she said.

This was Ralph’s first timeentering the banner contest.

Ralph, who works under theartist name jrr and is a mem-ber of West Chicago’s Gallery200, made the rough draft ofthe poster using a mixture ofink and chalk. The final piecewas created with acrylic paint.

The inspiration for the ban-ner, which features yellowand blue spirals surroundinga man on a bicycle, came fromthe idea of achieving goals.

“My feeling when I look atit is definitely a depiction ofdreams and hopes,” Ralph said.

Ralph works with sever-al different media, includingacrylic paint, pastels, oil, wa-ter colors, colored pencils, pho-tography, collage and more.

“I really do dabble in allmediums,” she said. “It de-pends what I wanted to paintand what medium is going tobe best for that image or thatidea.”

West Chicago Communica-tions Coordinator RosemaryMackey said Ralph’s banner

will be displayed downtownover a five-month period.Ralph’s entry had a “vibrantcolor palette and whimsicalinterpretation of the theme,”Mackey said in a news release.

The city had 12 originalbanners that hung in WestChicago from May to Septem-ber. Voters got the chance tocast ballots at Gallery 200 topick the winner.

The West Chicago CulturalArts Commission has alreadyannounced details about the2015 contest. For information,call the city at 630-293-2200 orsee this week’s CommunityVoice column from Mackey onPage 10.

That’s something the Du-Page Convalescent Centertakes seriously, as evidencedby the annual resident andfamily holiday party it hostedSunday.

The event has been a fix-ture for decades, said assis-tant administrator ShaunaBerman, and is the talk of theresidents for weeks beforeand after.

“It’s kind of an expandedfamily celebration,” she said.“The residents, their room-mates, their families, the staffand their families too ... theseare the events [where] we allcome together.”

This year, the center hostedeight parties across the build-ing, each with live music and“probably more [food] than

anyone should have around,”Berman said.

Each floor had a dedicatedSanta Claus who visited everyresident including those un-able to leave their rooms.

The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission has an-nounced an extension to the deadline for art submissions forthe 2015 Community Banner Art Project. The new deadline ofJan. 15, 2015, will allow those who may have wanted to submitartwork but were too busy with seasonal commitments thechance to participate.

The hope is for alarger-than-usual display ofart this year because of theconnection its theme has tothe upcoming launch of thecitywide health initiative,Healthy West Chicago, in May.

The invitation to submit upto three digital files of originalart for consideration is extend-ed to accomplished and emerg-ing artists with a connectionto the city of West Chicago(either through residence,work or school) or currentlyliving in the Chicago area.

An entry is comprised of upto three JPEG images at 72 DPImeasuring 7 inches tall and 5inches wide. All files should be numbered and named with theartist’s last name and first name (example: 01Lastname_First-name.jpg). All media are welcome, with no limitation to tech-nique or subject matter, as long as the theme revolves aroundthe artist’s view of A Picture of Health. An independent juror notaffiliated with the city of West Chicago or the West Chicago Cul-tural Arts Commission will select the works of art anonymously.

The chosen artwork will be transferred to 60-by-30 inch vinylbanners that will hang on street poles along Main Street in down-town West Chicago from May through September 2015, creatinga vibrant display of public art for residents and visitors to thecommunity. The commission hosts an artists reception, produc-es a walking tour guide that maps the location of each bannerand sponsors a People’s Choice Award for all banners selected.

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, visits Indian Knoll Elementary School on Dec. 17. Roskam was a guest speaker at the school’s fifth-grade leadership meeting, wherehe discussed what it means to be a leader and the traits of a good leader.

The center also hosts ayearly adopt-a-resident pro-gram alongside the event. Eachresident comes up with a listof items they want for Christ-mas, and the center often startsfielding calls from gift-givers inSeptember and has to make await-list, Berman said.

Both the communal par-ty and gifts are generallymuch-needed by residents, asabout 80 percent of the 360 areon some form of public aid, Ber-man said. Many don’t have fam-ilies, or have families too faraway to visit. Having a partybefore Christmas Day ensuresas many residents as possiblewill be present to celebrate.

“When we go into the holi-day season, a lot of us still missour real homes,” said four-yearresident John McCall. “We

have the opportunity not onlyto have our families here, butwe get to meet the other fam-ilies. ... Everyone walks awaywith a smile.”

McCall said he and his fam-ily spent a previous holidayparty with his last roommate,whose family lived in anoth-er state. His daughter evenbrought his roommate a gift.

“He wasn’t expecting any-thing,” McCall said. “It was re-ally rewarding for him and forus to see his expression. A lotof our people here do that, theyadopt their roommates.”

Resident Edward “Skip”Meyer said he always tries toreach out to his fellow resi-dents during the holiday party,and credited the festive spiritto the staff and volunteers.

“All of the staff here is excep-tional,” he said. “The way thateverybody comes together hereduring the entire Christmasseason to help out [is special].”

WHEATON – In his pre-vious nine-year stint as theWheaton Warrenville Southboys basketball head coach,Mike Healy became quite fa-miliar with the Jack Tosh Hol-iday Tournament.

Haley, who also is the WWSathletic director, returned tothe boys basketball sidelinesthis winter. His Tigers willbegin play Friday at the new-look tourney run by York HighSchool, a field that has sinceexpanded to 32 teams.

“You know what, you hearthat it’s a coaches tourna-ment, that there are a lot ofgreat coaches in it,” Healysaid. “And I believe that. Ihave a lot of respect for theguys in there. It is five gamesand it’s a grind. I love it, youplay good competition no mat-ter what.”

WWS will start off playwith a matchup against Provi-dence at noon Friday. The win-ner advances to take on eitherMcHenry or St. Patrick in thesecond round.

The Tigers enter with afour-game losing streak af-ter dropping a 54-39 decisionto Naperville North on Dec.19. The opening four minutesproved to be the difference asthe home team trailed 14-0 atthe outset. At one point, WWSsliced the deficit to five butcould not get any closer.

Austin Polezoes had ninepoints and Josh Ruggles andJeran Simpson each had sev-en.

“We aren’t good enoughto come out and get down14-0,” Healy said. “I thoughtwe scrapped, it didn’t snow-ball to the point where it wasover. We still felt we were inthe game in the third quarterand at the beginning of thefourth.

“We are trying to figurethings out. We are a little bet-ter than we’ve played the lastcouple weeks. It is easy for meto say that, we have to figureout how to get them to showthat on the floor.”

Wheaton NorthThe Falcons also are at the

Jack Tosh Holiday Tourna-ment and open up with Wau-bonsie Valley at 9 a.m. Friday.The winner advances to see ei-ther Conant or DePaul Prep inthe second round.

His best gamecame against Morehead Stateon Oct. 18, when he gained63 yards while scoring on a9-yard run.

High School: Wheaton

Warrenville South

Position: Guard

Impact: This redshirt senior

was an important cog on the

Flyers’ offensive line. After see-

ing action in 10 games during

the 2013 season, Cortopassi

started every game at guard

this fall and helped bolster a

Flyer offense that averaged

nearly 31 points and 200 yards

rushing per game this season.

Jack CrainCollege: Dayton

High School: Benet

Position: Linebacker

Impact: After taking a redshirt

year in 2013, this Lisle resident

saw action on the field as a

linebacker this fall. He played

in 10 games and tallied 32 total

tackles, including 1.5 tackles

for loss, to go along with three

pass break-ups. He had a mem-

orable game against Robert

Morris when he produced four

solo tackles and three assists.

Danny LeachCollege: Dayton

High School: Downers Grove

South

Position: Safety

Impact: After playing in 11

games as a freshman and

seven as a sophomore, Leach

ascended to be the starter at

free safety this fall. Appearing

in all 11 contests, the junior

was third with 67 total tackles,

including 42 solo stops, with

2.5 tackles for loss, two inter-

ceptions and a sack.

Michael MarstonCollege: Marist

High School: Glenbard West

Position: Safety

Impact: This junior was a re-

liable contributor for the Red

Foxes this season. He appeared

in 10 of Marist’s 11 games this

season, surpassing the seven

games he played in last season.

The safety finished the season

with 11 total tackles, four of

which were solo tackles.

Glen SomersCollege: Butler

High School: Fenwick

Position: DL

Impact: The senior from La

Grange was a stalwart on the

interior of the defensive line

this season and played in all

11 of the Bulldogs’ games after

playing in all 13 games a year

ago. He totaled 24 total tack-

les, including 2.5 sacks and

7.5 tackles for a loss on the

season. He played in 44 games

during his Butler career,

including making 26 starts the

past three seasons.

Nate SudnickCollege: Dayton

High School: West Chicago

Position: Defensive end

Impact: This sophomore was a

force on the defensive line for

Dayton all season. He played

in all 11 games and finished

fourth on the team with 64 to-

tal tackles, but led the Flyers

with 11.5 tackles for loss and

5.5 sacks. He also added an

interception to his impressive

stat line.

NAPERVILLE – With onlyone returning starter, Whea-ton Warrenville South’s girlsbasketball team figured tostruggle early this season.

The Tigers did just that,starting 0-7. All but two ofthose losses were close, includ-ing two in overtime, giving theteam hope for a turnaround.

That turnaround has ar-rived. South won four of fivegames before Saturday’s 42-31loss against Providence in itsfinal game at the Benet-Na-perville North Tournament.

“I’m very pleased,” Southhead coach Rob Kroehnkesaid. “We took steps, especial-ly defensively. We’re startingto understand positioning.We’re starting to understandthe effort that it takes to playgreat defense.”

The Tigers (4-9), who ad-vanced to the championshipbracket at Benet and finishedthe tourney with a 3-2 record,including a 52-38 upset of Na-perville North (8-5) on Friday,played great defense againstfavored Providence (9-4) andheld a 23-20 halftime lead. Butthey mustered only four bas-kets in the second half andlost despite giving up just fivepoints in the fourth quarter.

“Unfortunately the secondhalf we got caught where wecouldn’t score,” Kroehnkesaid. “It was little things hereand there, and unfortunatelyyou can’t help the other teamout when you shoot bad andturn it over. We’ve got to cleanthat up, but we’ve definitelymade big improvements sincethe beginning of the year andwe’ll continue to make them.”

Senior forward OliviaLinebarger, who recentlycommitted to NYU, led theTigers with 15 points, 10 re-bounds and five assists. ErinMadigan added 10 points, but

the rest of the team combinedfor just six points.

“I think [the tournamentshowing] is obviously a posi-tive because this is where weactually got our first win,”Linebarger said. “It’s been agrowing process with a lot ofgrowing pains. This tourna-ment shows us that we cancompete, so I think when it’sall said and done we can real-ly pull it together.”

Linebarger, the only Tigerwith previous starting experi-ence, will be key to that prog-ress.

“She’s got the experience,”Kroehnke said. “She knowswhat these games are aboutand she’s got to sort of be thecaptain of the ship.”

The Tigers will head to theState Farm Holiday Classicin Bloomington which beginsDec. 26 and ends Dec. 30. Thesquad opens up with PeoriaRichwoods and the winneradvances to play either NorthLawndale or Bloomington.

Schmid: What have been thekeys to the team’s fast start (9-1over the first 10 games)?

Brambora: I think we aredoing a really good job of play-ing as a team. We are sharingthe basketball and giving ev-eryone opportunities to scoreand really cracking down ondefense. We are a team witha lot of speed and hustle andheart.

Schmid: How much of anadvantage is it to have so muchexperience on your team?

Brambora: It’s really import-ant. It gives us an edge. We allknow what we are doing andwe don’t crack as easily underpressure. And if we get down,we are resilient and able tocome back. We know how im-portant the little things are.

Schmid: In what ways haveyou changed from being a fresh-man on the varsity to now?

Brambora: I think I’vebecome more confident andmore of a leader on the court.I really looked up to all of theolder girls on the team andnow it’s my responsibility tobe a leader for the youngerkids.
