n dreams and in love there are no impossibili-ties.

Never have truer words been spoken and I wear my Western Cape Bookmakers’ Associa-tion colours with great pride as I reflect back

upon 2011 as a watershed year in the blossoming to maturity of our fledgeling Social Equity Initiative.

Bigger is not necessarily better. But our Commit-tee resolved that the enormous success of the 2010 Christmas Fun Day, held at the Woodhill Racing Estate in Paarl, warranted nurturing and a step up from that foundation. The handful of children that enjoyed that glorious fun day in the country under the blazing African sun sent us a clear message that we were on the right path to providing the optimum mix of fun, memories and nominal material rewards.

The 2011 Christmas Fund Day was held on 5 December at the magnificent ‘The Rock’ on the out-skirts of Paarl. Spencer Cook, a renowned character and well-known personality in the racehorse breed-ing industry was our wonderful and most generous host. Spencer and his team could not do enough for us and opened their hearts, souls and beautiful piece of paradise for a day that will linger in all of our memories for a long time.

I must also thank our Guests of Honour who gave up of their valuable time to enjoy the day with the children. We were privileged to host the Western Cape Gambling Board’s Acting CEO Primo Abrahams and Lungile Mbunge, the Chief Licensing Auditor-Racing & Betting Department. Their active participation, interest and presence means a lot to us.

Our industrious and hardworking Vice Chairman Rudi Sattlegger rolled up his sleeves and took the band of 42 children and their care givers on a tour of the mares, foals and general facilities, regaling them with fact and fantasy. The farm tour was followed by a magician show and then it was straight onto the cooling relief of the slip ‘n slide. A sumptious braaivleis lunch followed by a visit from Mary

Christmas, who dished out gifts for all and posed for happy photographs. All the children enjoyed refresh-ments and ice-creams and were given a party and grocery hamper to take home with them.

As a first this year, we were also granted the op-portunity of showcasing the excellent work by means of a slide on our national horseracing television channel, Tellytrack. Thanks to Ken Rutherford and his team for this kind gesture and for the sterling work done to bring the sport of kings into our homes.

I must also acknowledge CAP for providing the complimentary branded caps at cost price. A cap was given as a momento to all who attended the fun day.

Thanks also to professional award-winning pho-tographer, Hamish Niven who donated his profes-sional services to provide a memorable photographic record.

As the sun cast long shadows over the majestic Paardeberg Mountains, we presented a cheque of R12000 to Daleen Labuschagne, CEO of the Khula Development Group. The funds will be put to good use and Daleen’s response is carried on page 4 of this brochure.

To all who did their bit to make the day. Thanks. The beautiful appreciative smiles on the faces of these wonderful children, just makes it so very worthwhile. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, made the difference and that makes everybody’s role so very important.

We also made a donation to the Grassboots FC to assist them in providing their Groundsman with meals. They continue to do their excellent work amongst the youth in promoting participation in healthy outdoor soccer-related activity.

As a wise man once suggested: It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.

I am looking forward to December 2012!Best Wishes

t is by the grace of God and the very generous intervention of community minded benefactors such as the West-ern Cape Bookmaker’s Association

that we at Khula are able to do our work.We started out in 2003 as a humanitar-

ian organization supporting out-of-school children in the Paarl East area. Through no fault of their own and due to their personal circumstances, these children have mostly fallen out of the school system and come from poverty stricken backgrounds.

By 2007 God had given us a new vision through which the children and their families could receive healing and restoration. Everything we do is by faith and through the power and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Khula remains a community- based program with a vision to provide sus-tainable support to these out of school children and their families, by assisting them where we are able on an emotional, social, spiritual and educational level.

Building on the wonderful success of our 2010 partnership day with the West-ern Cape Bookmakers’ Association, the 2011 Christmas Fun Day saw 42 under-privileged children from the Paarl East out-of-school children’s program being entertained and spoilt by the Western Cape Bookmakers’ Association on Mon-day 5 December.

These children, who seldom if ever get the opportunity to interact outside of their domestic and personal circumstanc-es, were overwhelmed by the wonderful farm atmosphere of Spencer Cook’s The Rock, and enjoyed the therapeutic ben-efits of the most majestic of animals- the thoroughbred racehorse.

Dean Finder and Rudi Sattlegger and their support teams went out of their way to make the day a memorable one for these wonderful children. They were treated royally!

The WCBA also made a very gener-ous cash contribution towards our work by donating R12 000 cash to the Khula Development Group. These funds will be utilised to provide school clothes and school necessities. Having these basics will also motivate the children to attend school and to ensure that an absolute basic like shoes, won’t keep them from realising their dreams.

Please visit us on our website www.khuladg.co.za.

Thank you so very much again to the Western Cape Bookmakers’ Association for their kind and much valued assis-tance.

Christmas Fun Day

Childhood MemoriesSome people have a childhood garden Filled with green and growing things Some people have a childhood garden

Filled with purple peonies Mine is sere

Throughout the year Nothing grows here

Some people have a childhood rainbow A sea of colors all aglow

Some people have a childhood rainbow Red to violet in a row

Mine is gray Bow of clay

Without a ray

Some people have a childhood temple Covered with a million treasured dreams

Some people have a childhood temple A sunny Wat of Gods and kings

Mine is plain Squats in the rain Functional ‘n sane

Where childhood memories abound Life flows vividly around

Where childhood memories have fled Hearts lie dead

With thanks to Tim Bovee
