series hisTOryBSU leads the all-time series 38-29 over Winona State. The Warriors have captured the last two meetings from the Beavers. BSU last defeated Winona State on Dec. 12, 2009 in Winona.
The Bemidji State women’s basketball team snapped a 10-game losing streak last Fri-day with a late victory over Southwest Minnesota State University guided by Shannon Thompson’s (So., G, Rosemount, Minn.) five points in the final minute. The Beavers looked for the same heroics on Saturday against Minnesota State but came up just short. Thompson looked to be the hero again after hitting a three-point shot with eight seconds left to tie the game but MSU hit the game-winner with just 0.3 seconds left on the clock to come away with the victory.
BSU enters play on Friday with a 6-18 (3-17 mark) and are currently in 13th place in the NSIC standings. The Beavers have been led by Anna Hebrink (Sr., G, Austin, Minn.) lately. Hebrink averaged 16.0 points in two games last weekend. Hebrink comes into the game averaging 8.8 points per game. Fellow senior Colleen McKay (Sr., C, Bar-num, Minn.) is the team’s leading scorer on the season averaing 9.4 points per game.

The BSU women’s basketball jumped to No. 21 this week after being ranked24th a week prior in free-throw percentage according to the NCAA National Statistics Sum-mary for Division II. The Beavers shot 40-of-48 for 83.3 percent last weekend against MSU and SMSU. BSU has been ranked in the top 25 nationally for free-throw percent-age for the entire season.
Beaver pride aThleTe OF The Week
BSU has had four players honored as the Beaver Pride Female Athlete of the Week so far this season. Shannon Thompson (So., G, Rosemount, Minn.) earned the first honor of her career after playing a pivotal role down the stretch in BSU’s last second win over SMSU. Colleen McKay (Sr., C, Barnum, Minn.) earned her second honor of the season after averaging 16 points and nine rebounds as the Beavers split with No. 21 Augus-tana and No. 9 Wayne State. McKay along with Anna Hebrink (Sr., G, Austin, Minn.) and Ellie Wessling (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.) are the three Beaver players to be honored this season.

Shannon Thompson (So., G, Rosemount, Minn.) emerged for BSU as the hero in two games last weekend. With 30 seconds left and down two on Friday, Thompson took a Samantha Baldwin (Jr., G, St. Thomas, N.D.) steal the length of the court and convert-ed a layup and added one from the free throw line to give BSU the lead. Thompson was clutch from the free throw line down the stretch as BSU got the victory over SMSU.
On Saturday, Thompson hit the game-tying shot with eight seconds left when she dropped back beyond the arc and sank a three-pointer. Her heroics on the weekend earned her a selection as the Beaver Pride Female Athlete of the Week.

Tiffany Van Haaften, a starter for the BSU women’s soccer team, played a career-high 13 minutes against MSU Moorhead and has been credited with being the guiding force in BSU’s comeback from 20 down in the first half against the Dragons. Van Haaften and the Beavers were able to cut MSU Moorhead’s lead down to six in the second half starting with a 9-1 run to end the first half. The run started with a putback by Van Haaften, who exhibited a high work effort in order to come away with two steals and a rebound in her 13 minutes of play. BSU outscored the Dragons 18-9 when Van Haaften was in the game on Saturday.
scOrinG OpTiOns
BSU has a lot of players on the roster this season with the capability to score double-figures. That can be a good or bad thing as the Beavers have found inconsistency to be a problem this season. BSU has had eight different players lead the team in scoring and eight different players lead the team on the glass this season. Ellie Wessling (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.) has led the way in scoring seven different times this season, which marks the most for any BSU player.

Bemidji State has played some of their best games this season against teams ranked in the top 25. On Nov. 19 at the Maverick Classic in Mankato, Minn., the Beavers came within two points in the waning seconds against No. 19 California University (Pa.) but ultimately came short. Then last Saturday the Beavers followed up their early season performance with an upset of No. 21 Augustana College. The win is the first victory for BSU over a ranked opponent since upended defending National Champion Minnesota State University, ranked No. 11 at the time, on Dec. 19, 2009. BSU struggled in their last ranked game on Sunday as they fell to conference-leading Wayne State College, ranked No. 9 in the country.
