1 OVERALL: 13-2 OPENING TIP OVERVIEW ~ The 13-2 St. Bonaventure Bonnies and 12-3 Duquesne Dukes renew their rivalry Saturday as two of the best teams in the Atlantic 10 commence league action. It will be the second straight year that SBU and Dukes open their conference schedules against each other. ~ The contest will be a battle of contrasting styles, as Duquesne leads the A-10 in scoring (72.2 per game – the only A-10 team which averages 70+), while Bonaventure ranks second in the A-10 in defense, allowing just 51.4 points per outing. Perhaps more importantly, Duquesne forces a conference-leading 12.5 steals per game, while Bonaventure leads the A-10 in fewest turnovers at just 12.6 per game. That total leads not only the A-10, but ranks the Bonnies second in the entire nation in that category. ~ The Bonnies finished last season tied for third in the A-10 with a 9-5 conference mark. The finish was the highest in program history. Despite returning 92 percent of its scoring and all five starters, SBU was picked sixth in preseason voting. Duquesne was tabbed for a third-place finish in the league. ~ The Brown and White will play five of its next six games against teams ranked in the top-100 of the RPI, and four inside the top-50, beginning today with the Dukes. Of its first six conference games, the Bonnies will battle four of the five teams picked ahead of them in the A-10 preseason rankings (Duquesne, 3rd; @ Temple, T-1st; @ Charlotte, 4th; Saint Joseph’s, 5th). ~ Duquesne and St. Bonaventure split their two meetings last year, with each team winning on its respective home court. After dropping a 60-54 decision at the A.J. Palumbo Center in the A-10 opener, the Bonnies responded with a 70-63 triumph at the Reilly Center. In that outing, Jessica Jenkins scored what was then a career high of 31 points behind a then-career-best eight 3-pointers to overcome just a four-point performance from Megan Van Tatenhove. ~ Bonaventure opens its conference slate riding a five-game unbeaten streak in the A-10, good for the second-best stretch in the league. After getting off a 5-5 start last season, the Bonnies won their final four games of the league docket. Only Xavier, which went 14-0 last year in conference action, begins the season with a longer unbeaten streak in league play. ~ Van Tatenhove, who returned to the lineup with 19 minutes of action against Sacred Heart Tuesday, needs just one rebound to become the ninth member of the school’s 1,000 Point & 500 Rebound Club. The Wisconsin native had missed four of the previous five games (prior to Sacred Heart) with concussion-like symptoms. She enters today’s game with 1,172 career points and 499 career rebounds. THree TimeS THe cHariTySt. Bonaventure boasts three of the best five free-throw shooters in A-10 history in terms of made free throws in a career. Hilary Waltman, who gradu-ated in 1999, ranks second on the all-time conference list with 588, Sue Shay, ’92, ranks third with 524 and Dana Mitchell, ’10, ranks fifth with 474. By owning three of the top five free throw shooters in a respective con-ference, Bonaventure is the only school in Division I history which holds that honor.
3-pOinT uWith 16 more made 3-pointers this season, Jessica Jenkins will not only own the program record in that category, but also the A-10 record. Jenkins cur-rently has 276 made 3’s in her career. The school – and conference – record is 291, held by Suzie Dailer. Dailer, who played at Bona’s from 1992-95, actually shares the all-time league mark with Cathy Jones of George Wash-ington. Additionally, 2006 SBU grad Stefanie Collins currently ranks third on that list with 288 3’s. If Jenkins hits 16 more 3’s, St. Bonaventure will become the only school in the nation with three of the top four 3-point shooters (in terms of made field goals) in any respective conference in women’s basketball Division I history.
amOng THe naTiOn’S eliTeSt. Bonaventure finished the 2011-12 campaign ranked among the nation’s best in several statistical categories. The Bonnies ranked in the top-10 in 3-point field-goal percentage (6th/38%) and turnovers per game (7th/13.8 per game). The Brown and White also ranked inside the top-50 in three other categories: scoring defense (23rd/55.2 per game); free-throw percentage (31st/74.4%); 3-point field goals per game (44th/6.8 per game).
a ‘BOna’ FiDe leagueThe A-10 finished the 2010-11 campaign ranked 7th among the 31 Division I conferences in the official NCAA RPI Report, ranking behind only the “Big 6” – Big 12, ACC, BIG EAST, SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10 (now Pac-12). However, no conference except the BIG EAST had MORE teams finish in the top 80 of the RPI than the A-10. The A-10 had eight schools in the top-80 – the same amount as the Big 12, Big Ten, ACC and SEC. St. Bonaventure finished 70th, and it was joined by Xavier (10), Temple (35), Charlotte (49), Dayton (50), Saint Joseph’s (68) and Richmond (77).
1,000-pOinT DuOSenior Jessica Jenkins became the 19th member of the 1,000 Point Club during a 23-point performance against West Virginia Nov. 18. Jenkins joined classmate Megan Van Tatenhove on the list as the Wisconsin native became the 18th member of the club last year in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
DeFenSive prOweSSFor the second consecutive year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in scoring defense. SBU held its opponents to an average of 55.2 points per game, one season after leading the A-10 at 54.1 points per outing. While five other schools in history have led the conference in scoring defense back-to-back years, no school has been as stringent as the Brown and White. The 54.6 combined scoring defense average the last two years by the Bonnies is THE BEST by any school in consecutive years in the history of the A-10.
BirTHDay girlSNot only are Jessica Jenkins and Megan Van Tatenhove St. Bonaventure’s two leading returning scorers, but they also share the same birthday: May 11, 1990.
3-pOinT eFFiciency aT iTS aBSOluTe BeSTFor the fourth consecutive season in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the Atlantic 10 in 3-point field goal percentage, connecting at a 38.2-percent clip (224-587). By leading the A-10 in 3-point shooting percentage four straight years, St. Bonaventure is the only school in the history of Division I women’s basketball to lead a conference in that category for four straight seasons. In 2009-10, the Bonnies shot 38.5 percent from 3-point range; in 2008-09 they shot 36.4 percent and in 2007-08 they also shot 36.4 percent. No other school in the A-10 has accomplished this feat more than two years in a row.

career DayS FrOm DixOn, walker Fuel BOna TO HiSTOric vicTOryST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Sophomore CeCe Dixon and junior Alaina Walker each finished with career-high 18-point perfor-mances as St. Bonaventure (13-2) defeated Sacred Heart (9-4) Tuesday afternoon, 67-63, for a program-record 13th non-conference victory.
In a game which featured seven scoring runs of 8-0 or larger, it was the Bonnies – behind Dixon – who made the final, game-deciding push. Trailing 46-45 with 12 minutes left, junior Chelsea Bowker converted a layup to put Bona in front, and then on consecutive possessions Dixon drilled 3-pointers to cap an 8-0 SBU run which gave the Bonnies a 53-46 lead they wouldn’t surrender the rest of the afternoon.
The victory established the program record for regular season non-league wins for Bonaventure, as it was previously tied with the 2007-08 and 2009-10 squads.
As part of her scoring performance, Dixon knocked down a career-best four 3-pointers, one game removed from tallying a then-career-high three trifectas last time out against Norfolk State.
After Bona shot a season-high 52.4 percent from the floor in last year’s win over Sacred Heart, the Pioneers focused on the SBU perimeter game Tuesday, opening up driving lanes for Walker who carved her way to 14 second-half points.
Half of those points came from the free throw line as Walker finished the contest by tying a career high with eight made free throws (8-9).
pOSSeSSiOn iS nine-TenTHSThe Bonnies have committed just 189 turnovers on the year – second-best in the nation – but they are even more stingy with the ball when the game is on the line. Of those 189 giveaways, 110 have come in the first half while 79 have come in the final 20 minutes. Additionally, in the final five minutes the Bonnies have committed just 12 turnovers, and in their six road contests in the final five minutes, they have given the ball away just one time.
cluTcH laTeMuch like the late-game possession, Bonaventure connects from the free throw line in pressure moments. Currently 15th in the nation at 76.7 percent as a team from the free throw line, the Bonnies are 51-69 (73.9 percent) in the final five minutes of games while their opponents are just 29-43 (67.4 percent). Even more impressive, the Bonnies are 21-27 (77.8 percent) from the line in the last five minutes of their road games, while those home teams are just 12-21 (57.1 percent).
ScOring marginThe Bonnies have a scoring margin of +11.2 on the year – one of only three A-10 teams with a positive double-figure scoring margin. SBU aver-ages 62.6 points per game and allows just 51.4. There is not a single team in the nation with a greater scoring margin which averages fewer points per game than Bonaventure.
nO SOpHOmOre Slump HereSophomore CeCe Dixon already recorded seven double-figure scoring games this season, as last year she reached that plateau just once, and is coming off a career-high 18 points versus Sa-cred Heart. Dixon is the third-leading scorer on the team at 8.5 per game, and has scored 128
points this year after netting 99 all of last year.
DiverSiFying Her gameSenior Jessica Jenkins – one of the best 3-point shooters in the nation – has gradually diversified her scoring game since stepping foot on campus. As a freshman, 77.4 percent of Jenkins’ 151 points came off 3-pointers. She lowered that percentage to 71.7 her sophomore year, decreased it even further to 69.2 her junior campaign and this season it’s at an all-time low of 67.6 percent. What’s more impressive is that Jenkins has increased her scoring average and 3-pointers made each season. She’s just 16 3-pointers shy of breaking the school and Atlantic 10 Conference 3-point record of 291 in a career.
Big 4 DOminanceSt. Bonaventure has won 15 straight games over Big 4 rivals. The 15 straight victories is the longest such streak in the history of Big 4 women’s basketball. The Bonnies have not lost to a Big 4 school since Nov. 19, 2006, when the University at Buffalo defeated them at the St. Bonaventure Shootout, 67-59.
STarTing quarTeT With a 79-55 win against Morgan State on Nov. 20, Bonaventure got off to a 4-0 start for the sixth time in school history. Five of those six occasions have come in the last seven years. The only other season a Bona team got off to a 4-0 start was the 1992-93 club.

In the most recent ESPN.com Mid-Major Rank-ings on Dec. 26, Graham Hays ranks the Bon-nies 4th among the non-BCS conference teams. Here’s what Hays had to say: “The only loss came in November at the hands of Delle Don-ne and Delaware (and she was at least forced to take 26 shots to get her 26 points in that game), and a win against Marist adds another prize to a list that includes victories at St. John’s and West Virginia. It’s time to take the Bon-nies seriously in the crowded Atlantic 10 race.”
naTiOnal recOgniTiOnFor the fifth and sixth times in program his-tory, the Bonnies were Receiving Votes in the national polls earlier this year. For con-secutive weeks on Dec. 19 and 26, SBU re-ceived one vote in the Associated Press Poll.
a very merry DecemBerFor the first time in program history, St. Bo-naventure won seven games in the month of December. The Bonnies went 7-1, with the only setback coming to Villanova at a neutral site.
career aFTernOOnSenior Jessica Jenkins established a career high in points when she netted 33 in the regular-season finale last year in a win against Charlotte. As part of those 33 points, the Marion, Ohio product set a program record by knock-ing down nine 3-pointers. Not only did that give her the school record, but it also tied her with three others for the A-10 record for made 3’s in a game.
leaDerS Once againFor the second straight year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, connecting at a 74.4-percent clip. In 2009-10, the Bonnies shot 79.8 percent from the charity stripe, and that percentage ranks as the sec-ond highest in conference history behind only the 81.5 percent Saint Joseph’s shot in 2000-01. St. Bona is the first school to defend its free-throw percent-age crown since Saint Joe’s in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Furthermore, last season was the eighth time in history that the Bonnies have led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, and that is the most of any school in the history of the conference.
BOmBS awayAs a team, St. Bonaventure made 16 3-pointers in its regular-season finale last year against Charlotte, paced by a program-record nine from Jessica Jenkins. That total ranks as the second highest in the history of the A-10 in a single game, bested only by the 17 Xavier knocked down against McNeese State in 2007. However, in conference games only, the 16 3’s by the Bonnies beat the previ-ous record of 14 held by Richmond in a 2008 game against Massachusetts.
inSiDe-OuT reTurning cOmBOSenior forward Megan Van Tatenhove returns as the second-leading scorer in the A-10 after averaging 14.5 points per game last year, while senior guard Jessica
Jenkins returns as the leading 3-point shooter in the conference after knocking down 100 3’s last campaign. However, in conference games only, Van Tatenhove averaged 16.2 points per game, tying her with Dayton’s Justine Raterman as the league’s highest-returning scorer in that category. Jenkins averaged 13.1 points per outing, making her and Van Tatenhove one of just two sets of returning team-mates in the A-10 who averaged 13 or more points per game last year. The other is the senior duo of Shey Peddy (14.1) and Kristen McCarthy (13.2) from Temple.
nO FreeBieS, nO prOBlemSt. Bonaventure was the only school in the A-10 last year to play a game and hold its opponent without a made free throw. Against UTSA on Dec. 21, the Roadrun-ners attempted just three free throws – also a season low for an opponent by an A-10 team – and made none of them. On the other side, the Bonnies made 14-of-20 en route to a 46-37 win – the fewest points the club held a team to all season.
DOwnTOwn clinicSt. Bonaventure set a program record by making 224 3-pointers last season, shat-tering the old mark of 192 set during the 2008-09 season. That total ranks second in the all-time A-10 record book, behind only the 256 made by Xavier during the 2000-01 season. Additionally, the club connected at a 38.2-percent clip (224-587), making it the second-highest 3-point field-goal percentage season in program history. The 2009-10 year with a 38.5-percent clip was the only higher season.
league leaDerSMegan Van Tatenhove scored a career-high 35 points against Dayton last year, a total which ranked tied for the highest-scoring performance by an individual in the league last season. Additionally, Jessica Jenkins’s nine 3-pointers against Charlotte, and her eight 3-pointer performance against Duquesne, ranked as the top-two per-formances by anyone in the A-10 last year in terms of 3-pointers made in a game.

rOaD warriOrSWith its win against Colgate on Dec. 22, St. Bonaventure extended its road record to 6-0 to start the 2011-12 season for the first time in program history. Bonaventure has had a winning road record in each of the last four seasons. The only other year beside the last four that happened was when the 1991-92 club went 7-6 away from the Reilly Center. Over the last four years, Bona is an impressive 40-25 on the road.
prOgram HiSTOryThe win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12 was the program’s first ever road victory against a nationally ranked team and just the third over a nationally ranked team in school history. The other two triumphs both came at home – against No. 14/13 George Washington, 63-60, on Feb. 16, 2008, and opposite No. 21/24 Michigan State, 63-52, on Dec. 7, 2008. The win over the Red Storm was also the program’s first over a BCS opponent since it won at Wisconsin, 56-51, in the Third Round of the WNIT on March 26, 2009.
gOOD FrOm THe STarTWith its win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12, the Brown and White has now won seven straight season openers, dating back to a 73-70 loss to Colgate to kick off the 2004-05 year. Furthermore, St. Bona has not lost a road game to start the season since head coach Jim Crowley’s first year at the helm of the Bonnies in 2000-01 – a 97-75 loss against Cincinnati. The current streak of seven consecutive season-opening victories is the longest in program history.
THe gang’S all BackSt. Bonaventure returns all five starters and 92 percent of its offense from a team which went 21-12 and finished 9-5 in the Atlantic 10, advancing to its third straight Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Bonnies finished tied for 3rd in the conference – their best-ever showing in the A-10 – and won 20+ games for the third consecutive season. Bonaventure is now one of just five A-10 schools which has won 20 or more games three straight years, joining Temple, Xavier, Dayton and Duquesne.

in the A-10 in preseason voting conducted by the league’s 14 head coaches. Senior Megan Van Tatenhove – who enters the year as the A-10’s second-leading returning scorer – was named to the Preseason First Team. Classmate Jessica Jenkins – who needs just 18 more 3-pointers for the conference record – was tabbed to the Preseason Third Team.
TOugH SleDDingA challenging non-conference slate precluded the always-difficult A-10 docket as the Bonnies faced eight teams which made postseason appearances last year, including three which advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bonnies went an impressive 7-1 against those teams, including a resounding 3-0 mark against schools which went to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last season (St. John’s; West Virginia; Marist).
Familiar FOeSOf St. Bonaventure’s 15 non-conference games, 11 were against teams the Bonnies squared off with last year. SBU went 7-4 in those games last year, but this year it avenged all those losses as it defeated No. 25/rv St. John’s in the season opener, won at West Virginia, 56-48, downed Morgan State, 79-55, and defeated Indiana, 65-45.

Wilson’s mother and five younger siblings jumped from their second-story home into the arms of New York City Sanitation Department workers, who saw the flames from a distance and called 911.
Temeka, Wilson’s mother, broke her back while trying to escape, sister Amari, 12, suffered a broken leg and sister Shaina, 17, suffered third-degree burns. The family lost everything in the fire.
University Ministries is accepting cash and checks on behalf of Wilson to help aid the family in its recovery. Checks should be made payable to “St. Bonaventure University,” and the Memo line should read “Wilson Family Assistance Program.”
