Mission The United Campus Ministry to the University of New Hampshire is an ecumenical

Christian ministry to the UNH community.

We are located at the Waysmeet Center at 15 Mill Road in beautiful downtown Durham, NH, right across from UNH.

We are committed to the spiritual growth and development of every person in our community, be they students, faculty, staff, administrators, family members and friends in the community.

Mission Continued… Through our programs and activities, campus ministry center and presence in the

community, we provide opportunities and access for spiritual growth and direction, faith development, witness and service to the community and the world, education, and contact with local communities of faith.

Support for the United Campus Ministry comes from denominational bodies of the United Church of Christ, the United Methodist church, the Presbyterian Church/USA and the American Baptist church.

Support also comes from various local churches of those four denominations and Lutheran, Episcopal, American Society of Friends (Quaker) and Unitarian Universalist churches, as well as individual sponsors and grants.

The United Campus Ministry is committed to several principles and ministries:

A ministry committed to the teachings and model of Jesus Christ.

A ministry of inclusivity and openness.

A ministry of hospitality, where all people are welcome and treated with respect, dignity and love.

A ministry of justice and peace in every community in every nation in the world.

A ministry of service to the community and the world.

A ministry that encourages ecumenical and inter-faith dialogue, interaction and shared ministries where possible.

A ministry of joy and laughter, humor and celebration.

A ministry that celebrates and affirms our Christian tradition and witness, and is open to the myriad ways that God's Holy Spirit works in our ministry and lives.

The United Campus Ministry accomplishes its mission in several ways:

Through interaction and dialogue with other Christian and Non-Christian groups, organizations and individuals.

Acting as a spiritual resource and center for the UNH community, working in partnership with various groups, departments and organizations at UNH and the community.

By providing individual counseling and spiritual guidance to members of the community.

Acting as an information and referral resource for a variety of needs, issues and situations.

Through regular and intentional prayer, meditation and contemplative practices.

Guest preaching, speaking, teaching and facilitating in local communities of faith, classes, residence halls, departmental retreats, and the like.

Being a spiritual presence in the community.

The United Campus Ministry accomplishes its mission in several ways:

Through weekly, BI-weekly, monthly and periodic events, activities, program seminars and the like.

Through a residential community of students who live at the Waysmeet Center located at 15 Mill Road.

Through the Waysmeet Center, which provides a location for our programs and services, and serves as a gathering and resting-place for members of the UNH community.

Through direct engagement and outreach to the UNH community

Through our ministries of hospitality, inclusivity, justice and love.

Larry Brickner-Wood Is the Chaplain, Campus Minister, and Executive Director of the United Campus

Ministry.

He is a pastor and ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, and completed his Master of Divinity degree at Andover Newton Theological School. Larry has worked at the United Campus Ministry for six years

And has been the full time chaplain and director since June of 2000.

Previous to that, he was an Assistant Pastor at a UCC church in Rochester, NH, and previously had a twenty-year career in municipal management and community planning and organization. Larry has a Masters in Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theolgical School, as well as a Bachelors of Science in Public Administration from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Vermont.

Larry Among Larry's primary interests are youth ministry, spiritual healing and

contemplative prayer, and justice and peace ministry.

He has an interest and passion for developing ways of living the reality of Jesus' "Third Way" of passive resistance and non-violence against the principalities and powers

of the world.

Larry is also working on ways to better incorporate a regular practice of Sabbath in his life and work (which may be the same thing!). Larry is married to Dea Brickner-Wood, who owns and operates Blue Sky Associates, an environmental and community planning and development company.

They have two sons, Noah and Brady, and live in Durham. They enjoy diversity, hiking, bicycling, kayaking, canoeing, sports, reading, music, drumming poetry, and being together with friends and family.

They love living in Durham.

Chuck Goeller

The Administrative Director of the United Campus Ministry.

Chuck's main interests lie in the area of music ministry, exploration of Biblical texts in relation to today's society, and the ministry of hospitality.

Chuck is also a singer, musician, and songwriter with diverse musical tastes.

Chuck is an avid entertainer and enjoys singing and playing in the New Hampshire, Maine, and Northern Massachusetts area.

He can frequently be found singing at weddings, funerals, worship services, restaurants, coffee houses, and in his own shows around the area.

He is a firm believer in the fact that when you walk through the front door of the United Campus Ministry, you should feel safe, invited, free to express your views, and ready for a good laugh.

Community Dinners to promote sustainability and ease hunger in our community:

Come and enjoy a delicious, healthy vegan and vegetarian meal with other folks in the community. Designed for folks who can use a simple, good, wholesome meal, and to promote sustainability and community.

Co-sponsored by the UNH Organic Gardening Club, Waysmeet Center, and the Cornucopia Food Pantry. Donations of food are always welcome, and volunteers are welcome, too, from 2:30pm on!

Training Volunteers to work with immigrant and refugee populations.

Wednesdays, 6-7pm Progressive Students Exploring Beliefs:

Meet weekly to explore shared issues of community, spirituality, religion and progressive action & thought.

Thursdays, 7-7:30PM Mindfulness Meditation:

This will be an opportunity to learn a meditation practice developed to cultivate mindfulness and awareness. This is a practice taught in the Buddhist tradition that works with the body's natural breathing. At the core, this is a practice for connecting with our human nature of confidence and Joy

Peace and Justice League

The Committee on Rights and Justice (CORAJ) is a New Hampshire community based immigrant and refugee advocacy group.

We meet every Wednesday from 6-7 at Waysmeet

Waysmeet ResidencyEach academic year, students live at Waysmeet as an "Intentional

Community." That is, they agree to live together committed to the following principles:

1. To treat each other with respect, dignity, compassion and kindness.

2. To agree to share equally in the household community, from chores to purchase of common materials.

3. To deal with any conflict situations in compassionate and productive ways designed to provide mutually affirming and supporting resolutions to challenges that arise.

4. To participate in regular house meetings (the frequency determined by the particular group and Chaplain).

Waysmeet Residency 5. To support and participate in the ministry of hospitality of the United Campus

Ministry, by welcoming and greeting all UCM visitors in friendly, polite and respectful ways.

6. To participate in some aspect of the United Campus Ministry in some way comfortable for the individual. That could be through participation in our programs, through service or volunteer work, assisting with care of the facility, and the like.

Each resident has a comfortable private room, and each grouping of three rooms share a bathroom and common hallway.

House residents also have their own private kitchen, living rooms and sitting rooms, and complete use of the grounds and common areas of the Waysmeet Center, including Hubbe Hall, for visiting, relaxation, study, recreation, meditation, reading, music, prayer, and so on.

The cost of living at Waysmeet during the academic year is currently $1,400 per semester, which includes cable, utilities, heat and electricity. Phone and the DSL internet connection are seperate charges. During the summer, the cost is $250 per month. (Rent amounts are subject to change.)

Persons interested in living at Waysmeet are asked to fill out an application form and to interview with the Chaplain and Administrative Director. Room decisions are made in March for the upcoming year. If you have questions, call or e-mail us.
