$10 Challenge “Everything is $10.” This was a simple conversation shared between two people at the grocery store. If you want more TV channels, the next package is $10 a month. If you want more internet speed, $10 a month. Want an additional feature for your cellphone, $10 a month. What some realize and others don’t seem to realize is that those $10 add-ons add up. $10 x 12 months = $120 That’s real money.

National Public Radio and other non-profit organizations also talk about $10 a month. This is the amount that makes you a sustaining member. That can be exciting and appealing. And, like an add-on, doesn’t seem like a lot of money. I can be a sustaining member for $10 a month! But what the non-profit knows is that those gifts are essential and they really add up.

As God’s people, $10 a month means a lot as well. But it isn’t about additional features or becoming a sustaining member. It’s about recognition of a simple truth: “All that we have and all that we are comes from God.” To hear it another way we can turn to a traditional prayer that is prayed after the offering is received in worship:

Merciful Father, we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself

for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen The CPC issued a $10 challenge to the congregation this year. The challenge is for 200 families at Bethesda to give $10 a month for the final 10 months of 2017.

There are so many amazing things happening at Bethesda. We have partnerships around the world through the missionaries we support; we are a beacon of light in our community because we support our community through the Bethel Boutique, the Bethel Food Pantry, the Monthly Neighborhood Gatherings, the Little Sprouts

Program and by having an open building where so many people gather like Al-anon, AA, Boy & Girl Scouts, Pita Brigade, and many other community

groups and organizations.

Despite all the amazing things that are happening, we face another reality. In 2015, we ended the year with roughly a $16,000 deficit. In 2016, the deficit was closer to $20,000. 200 families giving

$10 or $10 more a month for ten months = $20,000. Gap closed, deficit avoided. But it isn’t really about the money. It’s about our relationship with God and our belief in the many ways that God is active in the many things happening at Bethesda.

If you accept this challenge, you might consider automating your giving through the church website, your bank or by filling out a form with the church office. If you are hip to technology, you might consider downloading the Give+ App by Vanco to give via your phone. If you are old school, then the offering plate with a check or cash is your best bet. If an additional $100 isn’t too hard for you or your family to give, consider making that donation as a one time gift during the summer months when attendance and giving tends to be a little lighter. Finally, if $10 a month isn’t possible right now, we are blessed by the ways that you give already.

If you accept the challenge, pledge cards can be found in the entryway and returned to the church via the offering plate on Sunday or via mail. We believe that together this challenge can become a reality and that together, we can follow where God is leading us this year and beyond. Thank you.

Following the Risen One, Something for Everyone, Helping Anyone

This article begins a series that will focus on the whys of worship.

Over the next several months I will focus on the big question: why do we worship? as well as examining the why’s of the various parts of the worship service (i.e. why sharing of the peace, why communion, why the benediction, etc.).

However, before I begin with my own theology of worship, I’d like to invite you into the conversation (now we’ll discover how many of you read the evangel!). Would you please in the next couple of weeks send me your thoughts pertaining to the following questions? I truly want to know what stirs your heart, how God is moving in your life, what your soul is longing for. I will not use names, but will use your own thoughts and questions to guide this conversation.

Answer all or one of the following and send your thoughts to [email protected].

Please be honest and open; I’m hoping for a wide variety of your thoughts and questions (ask your kids their opinion, too!).

Thank you in advance for your help in cultivating a deeper understanding of worship among us.

The Whys of Worship

1. Why do you worship?

2. On days you don’t worship, what keeps you away?

3. What during worship feeds your soul?

4. What creates tension in you/what do you dislike?

5. How might you enhance or add to worship?

6. How does (or does not) worship connect to your daily life?

7. List any questions you might have for me pertaining to worship.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!Pastor Sarah

Monthly Neighborhood Gathering Coming Back for the Summer with Movies in Our Park - Free Fun! The Bethesda park is an awesome resource, but so many of our neighbors don’t realize that it is open for their use, that there are picnic tables, and that we love when it is used for everything from birthday parties to family reunions. So let’s invite our neighbors in and show them! Invite everyone you know with the flyer on page 8.

Our first screening is June 16: Finding Dory! Check out page 6 for details! That is the last day of VBS and Day Camps, too! What a great end to a great week!

How to Talk Out of Both Sides of Your Mouth While speaking truthfully…

Martin Luther was a media mogul for the late medieval age. He would have made a phenomenal blogger or columnist today. Andrew Pettegree notes, “In an age that valued prolonged and detailed exposition, complexity, and repetition it was astonishing that Luther should have instinctively discerned the value of brevity.” (Brand Luther: How an Unheralded Monk Turned his Small Town into a Center of Publishing, Made Himself the Most Famous Man in Europe - and Started the Protestant Reformation, page 5).

In The Freedom of a Christian, Luther summarizes the entire Christian faith in just two lines:

A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none.

A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.

You might notice a big difference between this statement and the punditry of our day. Contemporary media personalities (political or religious) gain an audience by speaking as strongly as possible out of one side of their mouth, whether the left or the right. There is only one way to see things as they are. On which side of the pendulum’s swing will you get off and take your stand?

Brother Martin, by contrast, often gave his arguments in the form of a paradox. The truth is to be discerned by holding seemingly contradictory observations in tension. Are you a saint or a sinner? Both. Entirely both. Is this meal bread or the body of Christ? Both. Inseparably both. Are we free in Christ or slaves of Christ? Both. Blessedly both.

Our Reformation Book Club will be reading The Freedom of a Christian for our June 10, 9am meeting.

This treatise is a brief (30 pages) and powerful introduction to the theology and writings of Martin Luther. Consider joining us or reading along on your own. Fortress Press offers a fine annotated version for $10 on amazon.com and we have a few copies for sale as well.

Easter blessings to you, fellow lords and servants in Christ!

Peace,Pastor Tom

Free, fun, and fashionable clothing is the #1 goal of the Bethel Boutique. As we finish the school year, 247 shoppers have benefited from our clothing ministry located on the lower level at Bethesda. We’ve helped babies attending the Headstart program to high school students at Kalapuya and Willamette. We’ve also helped families experiencing dire emergencies, Food for Lane County clients, and just recently a family who found themselves homeless.

Thank you for ALL the support we’ve received this year! Super shoppers you’re terrific! You’ve allowed us to supplement our gently used items with more and more brand new clothing. This summer be on the look out for deals on our most popular items: athletic shorts, leggings, skinny jeans, and socks and underwear.

Recently we received three pairs of new socks. The donor decided they really weren’t what she was looking for. If this has happened to you, consider donating them to the Bethel Boutique. We will take open packages of unused underwear and socks.

Food for Lane County We need volunteers for helping to set-up and distribute food two Saturdays a Month. This month the dates are: May 13 & 27. Set up is the day before at 2:00pm and distribution begins at 9:30am.

Fair Trade Fair Trade items will be available Sunday, May 14, 9:30am.

Pray For Our Missionaries Tim & Naomi Cowley, in Portland; Keith & Laura Jensen, overseas; Jerry & Kathy Liebersbach, Stateside & planning; Aaron, Liz and Mia Kalms, in Germany; Scot & Vicki McCracken, in Portland.

Garage Sale August 3-4 Save your stuff for this year’s sale. Collection will take place July 23-30. Call Allen Stutheit with questions.

Family Living In West Parking Lot There is a family living/camping in our west parking lot location, beginning immediately - Elizabeth and her middle school aged daughter (Ariana). They have a small lap dog. This is coordinated through St. Vincent de Paul and they will be with us for up to 90 days. They will have their own facilities. Please help them to feel welcome.

THANK YOU! 83 people signed up to run or walk and 70 brave souls participated in the cold, wind and rain at Alton Baker Park on March 18th for the Sage Bounds Medical Fun Run. Thanks to all who participated.

We had 5 people register runners and walkers and also help at the finish line. 8 people were "Race Marshalls", making sure participants went the correct direction. Thank you for your hard work.

11 businesses sponsored this event by either donating money or a product. We appreciate your support. A number of people helped set up or clean up and it was greatly appreciated. We were able to raise $2,493.52 from the race, plus another $200.00 in donations.

Please continue to pray for Sage and her family, that she may be one of God's miracles and be free of this disease.

Thank you, Ardelle Howell.
