Florida Cooling & Atlantic Solar Team-up

1st Solar PV HVAC Distribution Branch

Watsco, Atlantic Service & Supply, & Florida Cooling Supply teamed up with GE to introduce the first Photovoltaic (PV) system on an HVAC Distribution location in the U.S. The system began producing electricity around 9:30 Wednesday October 15th in the morning.

The array is composed of 126 - 205 watt PV modules manufactured by General Electric. This gives the array a total wattage rating of 25,830 watts at standard test conditions, and produces 46,480 kWh per year, or 50% of the total electrical consumption of Florida Cooling Supply.

The PV project was brought to life as a result of Gainesville Regional Utilities enacting a program called “Feed In Tariffs” or FIT in March of 2009. Although we eventually signed an agreement under “Net Metering” this was the catalyst that started the process. Forrest Campbell, CFO for Atlantic Service & Supply, submitted a formal proposal to Carole Poindexter, President for Baker Distributing, on June 1st 2009. This was eventually accepted and we applied for our construction permit at the end of June. The City of Gainesville issued a permit on July 24th. After receiving all the PV material from GE, Atlantic began construction on Monday, September 21st. Over the next two weeks the Atlantic Solar team, headed up by Bob Grant, worked to complete the construction of the array. The array was commissioned by GRU on Friday, October 2nd and connected to the grid that same day, immediately producing electricity.
