The I Ching is one of the oldest Chinese texts and the world’s oldest oracle, accumulated from over 2,500 years of diviners, sages and shamans and born out of the oral tradition. There are 64 hexagrams, created from a collection of six lines, either broken or solid. In order to “read” from the book, you must cast a hexagram. The traditional method required yarrow sticks but nowadays is based on tossing three coins six times. The Original I Ching Oracle or The Book of Changes was inspired by Carl Gustav Jung’s insights into the psyche and researched for more than 60 years through the Eranos Foundation of Switzerland. It presents the oracular core of the I Ching as a psychological tool: the symbols interact with our minds in the same way dream images do.

Rudolf Ritsema (1918–2006) was a renowned I Ching scholar and director of the international Eranos Centre for East West Studies. Shantena Augusto Sabbadini, a former theoretical physicist, joined Rudolf Ritsema to help run the Round Table Sessions and together they produced this translation of the I Ching.

Step 1Place the sheet of paper in front of you in landscape format (i.e. horizontally). Next, draw an image in the very centre of the paper that represents the subject you are considering, which in this example is the plays of Shakespeare. If you don’t want to draw the bard’s head, try sketching a quill pen or some other simple symbol instead. Whatever your central image, it will activate your imagination and trigger associations in your thoughts. You can also place a keyword below the image, perhaps using an interesting type style or even making it appear multi-dimensional. Use at least three colours for your central word and image.

Step 2Now pick a colour and draw a thick branch coming off from the central image, like the bough of a tree. Sketch two lines that radiate out from the centre and then connect them at the tip. Let the branch curve organically as this will be visually engaging and therefore more interesting to the brain, making you more likely to memorize the information on the branch. Shade in the branch. Its thickness symbolizes the weight of this association in the hierarchy of your Mind Map.

Step 3Label the branch with a single word in capital letters. As this Mind Map is about Shakespeare’s plays, you might label this fi rst branch ‘COMEDY’, or ‘TRAGEDY’ or ‘HISTORY’. Alternatively, instead of writing a word, you might decide to draw a comedic mask, or a dagger or a crown.

Step 6Now you have your main branches, move freely around your Mind Map, leaping from branch to branch, fi lling in any gaps and adding new sub-branches as ideas and associations occur to you.

Step 5Pick another colour and create your next main branch, working around the central image. (Many beginners fi nd it easiest to work clockwise around the centre, but do whatever suits you best.) As before, draw secondary- and third-level branches from this new branch and label them. Keep adding main branches until you have about fi ve or six of them to work with.

Step 4Send out secondary-level shoots from the main branch. Then draw third-level branches that spread out from these secondary-level shoots. Write keywords on all the branches or – even better – draw symbols. There’s no need to rush: leave some of the branches empty at fi rst, as your brain will naturally want to fi ll them in.

Th ose who wish to take the path of the shinobi must fi rst understand the concepts represented by the shinobi ideogram. It carries the following essential meanings: “perseverance”, “forbearance”, “endurance”, “secrecy” and “stealth”. Th rough its use by agents engaged in espionage the ideogram has also come to have the connotations of “spy”, “secret agent”, “thief” and “infi ltrator”.

In the Bansenshúkai Fujibayashi-sensei explains that the shinobi ideogram comprises the characters for “heart” (心) and “blade” (刃), because to plunge themselves deep into the core of the enemy shinobi must forge their hearts into weapons that are hard and sharp like a blade.

Th is is not a path for the weak. To venture into the dominion of the shinobi requires enormous self-control and a level of commitment and endurance that most people cannot attain.

What makes the path so diffi cult is that shinobi must be simultaneously loyal to their own clan and treacherous toward the enemy. Th ey live within samurai society but remain in its shadow, forever close to the centre but always cast to the outside, as any betrayal could mean the downfall of a clan. Consequently, shinobi sit outside the lord’s “light” but close enough to feel its “warmth”. Unlike the average soldier, they do not benefi t from the army’s protection – they do not march within the ranks or camp behind sturdy palisades. Th e shinobi venture out before all others, alone, and put themselves in danger deep inside the adversary’s stronghold.

Drawing from Different religions

The samurai class existed for approximately one millennium, from the 9th century to the 19th century, and during this time a variety of belief systems became prominent in Japan. Each of these influenced samurai and shinobi philosophy, although individual warriors would have been subject to their own beliefs and the political climate of the time. Here we give a brief overview of the most significant religions. To gain a fuller understanding of the shinobi mindset you should venture deeper into these teachings.

BUDDhiSM

Founded in India in around the fifth century bc by Siddhartha Gautama, Buddhism teaches us Four Noble Truths, which are:

1 Life contains suffering.2 Desire or “thirst” for certain impermanent states or things produces suffering,

which in turn leads to a build-up of karma, which ties us to the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

3 If we can identify and overcome our desire, we will reduce suffering and karma.4 Inner peace is found by cultivating a correct mind.

PURIFYING THE BODYPREPARING YOUR BODY, PREPARING YOUR SPACE

QQQQQQQQA central aspect of ritual in many traditions is the importance of purity, and

ideally all forms of worship and meditation should be practised when

the individual is as free from pollution as possible. This means cleansing and

grooming the body so that you are ready to begin your practice fresh and

untainted by the material world. In Kundalini we normally try to do our

sadhana (daily spiritual practice) in the early hours, sometimes before the

sun rises. This quiet time is good for meditating and cleansing the mind. I

defi nitely notice a difference in the quality of my day when I meditate before

dawn. If you have never experienced getting up at this time, try it at least once!

Traditionally, Tantric practitioners (called tantrikas) would practise nyasa

and mudras before beginning their Kundalini yoga practice. Nyasa, or the

sensitizing of the body by the gentle touch of the fi ngertips, is believed to

awaken the body and make it ready for meditation practice. Mudras, or hand

gestures (see pages 120–23), signify a person’ readiness for the divine to enter

sacred space.

Cleansing ritual is important in many cultures. Native American traditions,

for example, featured the sweat lodge, a kind of sauna that cleanses toxins from

the body. Smudge sticks and herbs were also lit to cleanse space, and some

tribes practised “going to water”, bathing in the moving water of rivers.

Before your Kundalini practice in the morning, I recommend taking a cold

shower for 1–3 minutes, as this hydrotherapy opens the capillaries and cleanses

the body’s toxins. If you fi nd this challenging, try massaging your body with

pure oil fi rst, to give your skin a protective coating. If you allow yourself time

to adjust to the cold water, your body temperature will regulate and you will

feel awakened and invigorated, ready to embrace the day. You may also like to

burn some incense or sage to cleanse your meditation space, or chant a mantra

to set your mind in motion and free it from everyday thoughts.

Purifying the Body

CLOTHINGWhether you prefer to meditate in the morning or in the evening, it is good to

change your clothing so that you prepare yourself physically and mentally for

your sacred time. Getting dressed focuses the mind and reminds you that you

are about to do something special. It is a different feeling jumping out of bed

and meditating in your pyjamas than it is meditating in clothing that uplifts

and inspires you.

I prefer to wear white, natural, organic cotton when I practise yoga and

meditate. It is believed that lighter colours have a positive effect on your aura,

and white in essence symbolizes purity. I defi nitely feel lighter and calmer

when I wear white – but the choice is yours.

Here is a plan for a whole day of spring-time Forest School activities, all inspired by the spirit of renewal that permeates this exciting time of year.

A chocolate-egg hunt is a great way to start the day, filling everyone with feelings of achievement and allowing all that excitable energy to be released. It’s a very appropriate activity for springtime: for Christians, the Easter egg represents the Resurrection, but in fact the use of eggs as a symbol of new life is much older than that. The ancient Egyptians, for example, believed that the sun god Ra hatched from an egg, and the idea of a cosmic egg that gave birth to the universe is found in many cultures.

The second activity – designing a clay hare tablet – draws inspiration from one of the animals traditionally associated with the spring season. Have you heard the expression ‘mad as a March hare’? This saying refers to the way hares leap in the air and seem to box with each other in springtime, especially during the month of

March. This behaviour is part of an elaborate mating ritual, which is appropriate as hares have been used as symbols of fertility since ancient times. The Celtic fertility goddess Eostre (from whose name the word “Easter” derives) is associated with both the egg and the hare. This activity, in which gathered natural materials are used to shape unique pieces of art, develops children’s observation and fine motor skills, stimulates their creativity and gives new and exciting perspectives on nature. DanDelion anD lime Tea

Get readyBefore letting the children go off to forage, show them a dandelion with its distinctive bright yellow petals and toothed leaves. Each forager can then take a cup and head out to where the dandelions are growing. Once they’ve shown they can positively identify them, show them how to pick only the flowerhead by pinching it between thumb and forefinger, and then popping it in the cup. Don’t worry if some stalks are gathered – all parts of this plant are edible – but the

the stalks and leaves taste more bitter than the yellow flowers. Now let the children gather flowers to put in their cup – they only need a handful. Help younger children identify the correct plant.

Get setOnce enough flowers have been collected, gather back at base camp. Check that everyone has only dandelions in their cups and pour cold water into each cup to gently wash the flowers – and help any bugs that may be present to escape! Most children will be keen to inspect any bugs that emerge, but some may be nervous about this and need reassurance. After a good swill, place your hands over the top of the cup to act as a strainer and tip away the water, or use the tea strainer if you have one. Halve the limes (older children can do this under supervision) and hand out one half to each maker (for some a quarter may be enough).

Go!Everyone can now place the washed dandelions into a fresh cup, squeeze in the lime juice and then drizzle in about a teaspoon of honey (or use sugar, if you prefer). To pour in the hot water from the thermos, place the cups on the floor. Let older children do this if they want and assist younger ones. Leave to steep for 5–10 mins, after which the water should have a slight yellow tinge. Add cold water now if it’s still too hot to sip. Then sit back and enjoy a revitalizing springtime drink!
