Homeowners are responsible for preventing damage—and making repairs—to these items located on their property. This is a good time to check that the shutoff valves on either side of the water meter are working. To help prevent breaks, wrap the meter and pipes in commercial insulation or heat tape available at hardware stores. If frozen pipes occurred in the past, keep water trickling from the highest faucet during frigid weather. You will be billed for the water, but this can help prevent costly repairs that result from broken pipes. If you’re travelling, keep a minimum amount of heat on in the house to help protect pipes when the temperature drops. If pipes freeze or burst, it’s best to call a licensed plumber. Turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house. Slightly open a nearby faucet so the pipe drains as it thaws.
