Health

India ranked a low 120th in a survey of 123 nations on safe water index

USD 1.5 billion spent on rural medical expenses annually

1600 children die in India every day due to waterborne disease

Stunted development of 20 million children annually

Two-thirds of hospital beds in India filled with patients with waterborne disease

USD 600 million- Economic cost of waterborne diseases annually

73 million working days lost due to waterborne diseases

A new approach is necessary

The Need is Significant

Page 6: Watertech

Large scale infrastructure systems expensive and not economically viable for low density (rural) areas

Conventional equipment supplies without long term service model, unsustainable/uneconomical in remote rural areas

Government grants/subsidies cannot solve the problem.

NGO efforts alone are helpful but limited by nature

A new approach is necessary

Existing solution

Page 7: Watertech

Innovative business models - programs pay for themselves

Decentralized, micro-utility systems approach

Operation and Maintenance by Waterlife

Affordable and accessible to all

Inclusive approach - Government and NGOs part of program

Superior financial, social and environmental returns

Education and Awareness

Long term sustainable model

The Waterlife Breakthrough – creative fusion of:

Page 8: Watertech

Water User Fees/AMC

WL operates / maintains plant .

Delivery of water by local franchisees- seeds local entrepreneurship.

Builds long term sustainability of model. All charges involved in running of plant sustainably are taken care of.

Monthly water quality test report will ensure consistent quality of water months after months. No surprises.

Education and Awareness.

The Waterlife Model

Page 9: Watertech

Technology agnostic-uses superior green technology Wide breadth of solutions for various contamination Village specific solution, best available technolgy is chosen for

contamination removal. Environmentally, socially, economically sustainable

Innovative business models Focus on health, high quality, and affordability Decentralized “total” systems and services offering Non-traditional partnerships and channels to market Accessible even to less affluent rural communities Differentiated models for urban and rural segments

Unique harnessing of critical elements for deep reach into underserved areas

The Waterlife Model

Page 10: Watertech

Can process source water from:

Lakes, ponds, or rivers (surface water)

Ground water

Pressurized flows (municipal supplies)

Versatility and modular designs enable product variety:

Community-scale systems

Flexibility of selecting the best suitable technology

Initial focus on

Microbiological contamination

Fluoride Removal

Arsenic and Iron Removal

High TDS solution

Rain Water Harvesting – Advantages

• Sustain or maintain the ground water table.

• Enhancing the ground water resource capacity.

• Improving the ground water quality by diluting the harmful chemicals such as As, Fe, Pb, Hg, Cd, Fl, NO3, etc.

• Reducing the cost of drilling bore wells as after aquifer recharging the table is to increase and the drilling depth shall drastically reduce.

• Easy availability of fresh water at the shallow levels under ground.

Page 15: Watertech

Precipitation & AbsorptionPrecipitation & AbsorptionFor Iron, Arsenic, and other Heavy MetalsFor Iron, Arsenic, and other Heavy Metals

• Ferric Hydroxide or Hydrated Ferric Oxide is widely accepted media for the removal of naturally occurring heavy metals from water.

• The process offered is capable of generating Ferric Hydroxide or Hydrated Ferric Oxide on its own and shall keep on enhancing the Heavy Metal Removal efficiency.

• Oxidation chamber oxidise the dissolved iron and produce Ferric Hydroxide.

• This produced Ferric Hydroxide shall be in precipitate form.

• This precipitate of Ferric Hydroxide laden water stream is passed through a Sand Bed Filter.

• At Sand Bed Filter this precipitate is trapped in various layers of it which actually form a very thin coat on the fine sand granules.

• This thin coat of Ferric Hydroxide on the fine sand granules maximises the surface area of the created Ferric Hydroxide coated Sand Bed which enhances the Heavy Metals removal efficiency.

Page 16: Watertech

• Activated Alumina media adsorbent has fluoride uptake capacity more than 5000 mg/kg as compared to 2300 mg/kg specified by Public Health Engineering Department of various State Governments and 1800` mg/kg as specified by UNICEF.

• The water properties has been maintained as per WHO Standard.

• The appropriate particle size is 0.40 – 1.2 mm in spherical or granular form for the maximised contact area.

• This product has a Bed Crushing Strength of > 99%, Surface Area is >370 m²/gm and Bulk Density 0.68 – 0.75 gm/cc.

• The other specifications are same as released by U.N.I.C.E.F. for Fluoride Removal application, and the same media is widely used by U.N.I.C.E.F. in India for De – fluoridation.

• The systems are required to be backwashed every fortnight. One individual from the location is recruited and trained for doing so at regular interval.

• The media quantity per treatment scheme is designed in such a manner that the regeneration is required after 6 to 18 months:• De – fluoridation Six to Nine months• Nitrate Removal Six to Nine months • Iron Removal Eighteen to Thirty Six months • Heavy Metals Removal Eighteen to Thirty Six months

• Specialized trained personals are deputed for carrying these periodically.

• Every regeneration is followed by the water testing of that location.

• The media is proposed to be replaced after every 4 regenerations. Hence there is no possibility of any slippage / leaching and channeling in the media bed.
